Wish I could be in attendance.
Winter Classic Open Thread
Glad to see the students got there early!
THE STUDENT SECTION IS FULL
Man that looks freaking awesome! Kinda wish I would have went, but sitting here in my living room watching a bunch of bowl games and the Wings isn't bad either.
My feed for fhe game is seriously messed up. Is NBC having an issue or is it just DirecTV?
Must be DTV
Looks like it was my local NBC that was messed up. They got it fixed right before they dropped the puck. Must have been a bad satellite uplink of some sort.
Hey look! Our student section is full before the start of the game
Hopefully all this attention in AA pays off for the University too. I like all of the reminders they're showing of how awesome the Big House is.
gorgeous in the Big House today! Happy 2014!!!!
What's with all the red in the crowd??? Dammit Dave Brandon! Rabble rabble rabble!
Who needs college bowl games when hockey is on, eh? Let's go Red Wings!
This is amazing. Go Wings!
Been watching the pre-game stuff on NHL.com and it's nice to see the reactions of these guys.
I had no idea Toronto's JVR went to Pioneer. Pretty cool.
Look at the goalie twitching like that
I remember seeing that tradition in 24/7 episode 1
I said at the beginning of the fall that it was dumb to have the game in A2 on New Year's Day because we all would be paying attention to Michigan's bowl game. Whelp.
Let's Go Red Wings!
Why the fuck do we need a concert before the game?
Never understood that, I hate it.
Boom - lets ruin it with something really stupid and for what? The kids? I think the snow is enough of a draw, eh?
...in LA for the Rose Bowl. Go Cardinal!
Temp is still in double digits (12). #HALOL
Probably a good thing. Windchill is -2. It's pretty fucking cold.
give em the axe.......
Howard's winged goalie helmet is fucking awesome.
Just can't escape the ZBB.
Those uniforms are sick, too.
Helm is out. Glendening on the first line
Dammit! Helm's out again?!
He's getting a message from me.
If I'm right about this, he'll have played in the two biggest hockey games ever for two different teams, in two different leagues, both in the Big House. Pretty interesting
Awesome, I didn't know he had moved up. And he wins the opening faceoff!
Zac Brown Band!!
And Trombone Shorty....
ZBB.....are you fucking serious.....
Anyone who's watched Michigan hockey on FSN understands my rage.
I saw goodbyye in her eyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyes!
Ice looking very slow! Will be interesting
This is like watching your childhood sweetheart make out with a bunch of hillbillies. do not like. do not like at all
This is going to be a long game.
This game is why I would like to see Michigan v. Ohio.... Blue v. Red...
That's a lot of snow.
Stupid, allowing sponsors in the Big House.... on the rink at that!!!!! Rabble, rabble, rabble. Fire Brandon.
Glendening is going to get minutes today. I would love to see him get his 1st career goal in this game.
Feels weird pulling for a team wearing red at the Big House.
Good job on the PK!
Babcock has great style
Cross check right into the side of Eaves neck.
Toronto fans go out of their way to defend Dion Phaneuf. He wouldn't be a top pair defensemen on any cup contender in this league, and they still extended him for 7 million a year.
Small price to pay in order to stare at Elisha Cuthbert during team functions......
But I can't find her attractive knowing that she was with Sean Avery.
Guy is doing 25 a night against the top lines from opponents and is plus 13.
I think they overpaid but his numbers certainly don't bear out your analysis.
+/- is a terrible indicator of preformance. Phaneuf goes against the top lines and plays like crap. He isn't a #1 defensemen and they're paying him like he's elite.
Can you watch this guy play and honestly tell me that he's as good or better than Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Chara, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang? Those are the other 7 million a year defensemen in the league.
I'll take him over Karlsson and Letang but not over Doughty, Chara or Keith.
Toronto fans are so afraid of him walking they will defend his mistakes and refuse to admit he's not that good. It's like Stockholm Syndrome.
His pinching is terrible. His decision making in the neutral zone is equally terrible, and one-on-one he's average.
Phaneuf would be great as the #3 defensemen or as a compliment to a #1 like Brent Seabrook. You don't pay that guy 49 million.
Okay. Well, my anecdotal opinion differs.
Glad you clarified.
Thank you for making my point defending an overrated player by providing no argument besides a +/- stat.
Versus your anecdotal data on your perception of his play.
I'm just saying I am not convinced by your argument. Not at all.
I am guessing you are not a Leaf fan. Too bad as your bias plays out. Anyway, here are some metrics better than your gut feeling.
extraskater.com ranks Phaneuf's minutes as the most difficult in the league in terms of player quality competition. Check it out. Plays 25 per night against that competition and more than 28 versus the Wings today. Phaneuf is plus 15 after today. He handled the Wings top line at the Big House.
Other interesting facts: dating to the 2011/12 season Phaneuf is top 10 among defensemen in goals (7th with 25), ppg goals (10 for 8th) and games played (169 for second). Second on the team in hits with 102 and blocked shots with 76.
The guy is willing to fight as opposed to several of the defensemen you listed (Karlsson I'm looking at you).
In summary, your arguments are limited to your gut feeling and not much more. Given the cap moves up next year substantially 7 mil per season for a 25-28 minute a night player is not bad given the metrics above.
Damn, no joy on the PP.
I didn't know we had "the big house" trademarked. I'm not surprised, and perfectly reasonable- I just have never seen it shown with it trademarked
It just doesn't get any bigger.
Isn't it nice seeing no Arbys logo on the jerseys?
Take notes Dave BRAND-ON
Dan Cleary and Todd Bertuzzi are pretty useless. They are taken off the puck so easily and are slow. Why do we continue to give these guys ice time???
Wow, replay shows how huge that toe save was by Howard.
Listed as questionable, but I doubt he will be back
Toronto goalie took a chance there, but we couldn't capitalize.
Alfredsson! 1-0 WINGS!
But that wasn't a kick in any way.
Looks like it deflected off Toronto stick.
Judging by the international success of this event, this will ultimately pave the way for a WrestleMania at Michigan Stadium in the future.
Too big a pay day to pass up. People come in from all around the world for that. They did one at MetLife last year and it had 80K+. The Silverdome still holds the record with 93K+.
Glendening and Paul Ranger have been going at it all game.
Look, NBC, I know you're using about 82 cameras. We don't need you showing off every fucking one of them in the middle of a key power play.
Howard shuts the door, Kindl to the box.
Damn, Kindl didn't close his hand on the puck!
Another big save by Howard!
Fuck, they score. 1-1.
Wings alumni won their games, but this one is for points, so c'mon, Wings, let's win this!
....but look at the talent on the Wings alumni teams versus the Leafs. Not even in the same league.
Sundin is about the only Leafs guy that could hang with Detroit's best.
Well, the fans there don't have to worry about their beer being cold. #HALOL
I've worked Adrian College's womens' hockey games the past couple years. Some of the girls that play hockey are real smokeshows.
Shit. They score, 2-1 them.
Hard to watch. Step down from the normal view. Just stick with the normal angle NBC
Not a fan of it in live action either
But that's just me
The swooping in and out, zooming in and out, and changing camera angle was just too much. Plus the fact that the normal score bar was gone as well
I liked it too, which surprised me because that camera puts me into a rage when used for football. Nice view to see how everyone is positioned on either side of the net, and really nice for seeing replays of shots. Glad they used it sparingly though.
Rats, their goalie was able to get to that puck first.
Huge PP opportunity coming up.
Damn, no joy.
Attendance at the Winter Classic: 105,491. Would be a new world record if verified by the Guinness World Records.
— Alejandro L. Zúñiga (@the_zuniga) January 1, 2014
I thought the game was a sure sellout. Looks like it's still not certain this game will be the world record
It only took 5 and 3/4 periods for a Spartan to score a goal in Michigan Stadium.
— Chris Dilks (@ChrisDilks) January 1, 2014
Wtf. Is this U-7 soccer? Why is there a halftime to a 5 minute overtime period
To give teams equal time at both ends in an outdoor game.
Should do it after there's a whistle.
Damn, horn sounded for end change. What rotten timing.
Shootout. Put Homer in!
Wonder if we'll get a concert before the shootout by Little Jimmy and the Dickbeaters, or whoever it is they found to play earlier.
This has probably been said, but I love the uniforms in this game. And it's pretty awesome seeing red and blue out there together. I wish more games in every sport featured both teams' colored jerseys.
Leaf fans can't help themselves.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Berenson was coaching when Dufek was playing.
Dammit, they tie it.
Good grief, Jimmy. You can't give THAT one up.
Shit, they win.
Typical Wings result this season, indoors or outdoors.
I am happy. Both teams deserved a point. Glad to see the Leafs pick up the second.
Jimmy Howard is not good so far this season.
Well today's game is the first time he looked great. The only 2 goals allowed were flukes. Shootouts are stupid so can't put that on him as much as you could really.
Yes. Yes you can. Gus has played exceptionally in shoot outs. Jimmy has been awful. Like deer in the headlights bad.
Good game, unfortunately it ends up the way most Wings shootouts do.
And 2014 is starting great.
Another Shootout loss. Can't wait till they change this stupid format for Overtime.
Patch made the olympic team. Didnt know if he would
Max Pacioretty on the Olympic team.
Max Pacioretty is on the team. Jack Johnson is not.
I was really surprised JMFJ didn't make it. Anyone know why?
They wanted a defensemen to play with Suter or McDonagh, who are both left handed. Jack is a lefty, and they didn't feel comfortable with him playing his offhand.
I am a little confused that they left off Erik Johnson and Keith Yandle in favor of Justin Faulk and Cam Fowler. Not good choices.
It was also debate between management and the coaches. The coaches didn't like JMFJ's inconsistent play this season. Cam Fowler won out due to his more consistent game.
event regardless of the outcome.
Had a great and memorable afternoon with my dad. Also, I had absolutely no surprise when Jimmy Howard proceeded to look retarded in the shoutout.
I think that was the best sports event I have ever attended. Absolute beauty.
Favorite team playing in my favorite stadium on the campus of the greatest university in the world. Plus cold Molsons being served, Mayer Hawthorne, crazy Canadians everywhere, and a blizzard.
I really wanted to see an octopus on the ice, but that would require one hell of a toss.
