@jcshurburtt: #Spartans could own the state of Michigan starting in 2015 writes @SWiltfong247 (VIP) http://t.co/JYg4OQNcQa #TheOracle At this point it could be essentially true, since we have neither offered or shown a great deal of interest in several of the top players in the state next year.

In some instances, that's not a bad thing.  There are times when Ohio kids pick UM "over" OSU, despite not having an OSU offer, and OSU (justifably) says "we didn't want him."  Sometimes those guys ride pine, and sometimes those guys become Jake Ryan or Fitz Toussaint (or fingers crossed Frank Clark).

Campbell might become Jake Ryan, but it's more likely be becomes Courtney Avery or Elliott Mealer (no offense to either of them).

I COULD take a huge shit tomorrow.

At this point it could be essentially true, since I have neither taken a shit today or shown a great deal of interest in taking a shit today.

I mean it's definitely possible. We're not offering Campbell is seems, Weber seems content on not UM after we took Harris (plus according to Webb, the coaches only plan on taking one 2015 RB at this point), Alabi seems really interested in UT and MSU, and Cole is the big prize. It's been trending MSU's way for a bit as it seems they're putting more work in for him than UM. We'll see, but certainly possible.

Mild buzz on Twitter that they're going to pick up a commitment from Jayru Campbell tonight. Which is fine, there's a bunch of talent out on the west coast that is worth chasing after.

Agreed, it's pretty obvious that he is both talented and that Michigan is completely disinterested in him. There are plenty of good QB's out there that Michigan will never pursue because they have a very specific criteria for their QB skill set.

However, it is interesting that State is starting to pursue some kids with some legs on them. Although Terry and Campbell aren't quite dual threat, they're not statues like all of the guys they've been recruiting for the past 5 years either.

I agree, and I think they 'll be changing up the offense here in the future. There's been a couple of signs that Michigan State has wanted to start incorporating the QB into more than just the passing game. They've been running Connor Cook on some read option plays (not many, but a couple) both in game scenarios and in spring games, and then of course the past two QB's they've recruited (assuming for now that they get Jayru) are mobile guys as you said. I think that's a good way to go for them, because if you're not getting Chad Henne back there to throw for you, you're handicapping yourself by not having a guy who can move.

Yep. Dantonio has added a few QB option runs in the playbook and there is video of Maxwell and Cook practicing the speed option in training camp. I think if Maxwell is the starter throughout the season, Cook, O'Connor, or Terry (all pretty mobile guys, level of mobility goes in that order) will get some snaps and there will be certain packages that have them run.

While I hate to see CT kids go anywhere other than A2, I'm glad that we're not pursuing a square peg for the round hole in this situation (yes, haha, sounds funny).  Dantonio is never going to run an offense suited to a "mobile QB" and if Campbell continues to improve, he'll be gone to an out-of-state program that revolves around such a talent.  Win/win in that regard.  Dantonio angry; CT kid with a chance to shine.

[edit: Dantonio is always angry, so my comment doesn't make complete sense.  Let's update "angry" to "angrier"]

Since Michigan has gotten one player (Thomas Gordon) from Cass who was anything more than replacement-level in many, many tries I'm fine with other schools tapping into our "pipeline" of guys who rarely work out.

Campbell is not a mobile QB, BTW, even with that hair.

His Alabama offer from last year is not commitable, and I don't think they have been recruiting him anymore. Besides they took a commitment from Ricky Town yesterday. Notre Dame had been recruiting him as an athlete, but same story as Alabama with a noncommitable offer. He hasn't developed to expectations since his freshmen year, and it looks like a lot of schools have backed off of him.

Jayru Campbell is not a typical zone read option QB. He is not that fleet of foot and actually looks more like a drop back QB. I wouldn't be surprised if Morris and Bellomy could keep up with him in a footrace.

It's considered to be a very strong year in Michigan, but it seems the Michigan brand is back to the point where even the best players in your state have to fight to get in the class.

It seems like other than Cole, There doesnt seem like a whole lot of players in the '15 class from Michigan that the staff like.  Campbell probably wont get an offer, and it seems like Alabi isnt really a priority.  As others have said, Cole seems like the big prize, and I feel pretty confident that if our staff wants him, they can probably get him.  It's honestly hard to get worked up about this because, you know, campbell and harris

Is it well known that UM coaches are not after Alabi?  I hadn't read anything that would give that impression.  Are Cole and Alabi the only 2015 offers from MI?  I know Weber got one, but given Harris' commitment, might that have been rescinded?  Does Stallworth have an offer?Cole and Campbell have a close friendship from what I read about from the BBQ, so that helps.

Given the limited schollies next year, I guess it shouldn't be surprising that MSU could get a number of 4-star in state guys.  Of course, there is a LONG time until Signing Day 2015, so there is a lot that chan change between now and then.

It's not like we have any big-name commitments from that class.

On a related note, I COULD date Kate Upton in 2015, if all the better-looking, more talented and more sociable men don't grab her first.

This is one of those silly statements slicing recruiting in a way that makes Sparty look better. Is there really any doubt about which team will have the better class in 2015?

We shouldn't of hired Hoke! He can't close on Pre-Madonna skill players and now Dantonio will by enlarge own the state recrootz. It's to bad.

This is not directed at the OP. Certainly there are talented kids in MI and we don't want State to start building legacies or hurting our pipeline. As of now Im not worried though.

They could very likely land 6-8 of the top prospects in Michigan, I guess we'll just have to console ourselves with the top recruit class in the whole country. How ever will we manage??

Which leads me to a question I have had since the beginning of the tenure of the previous HFC whose name I will not mention not because I hate him but because I don't mean for this post to turn into a referendum on that coach.

Namely, and this is not a rhetorical question, if your school is not in Texas, California, Louisiana, Ohio, or one or two other states, why does it matter if you win your "in-state" recruiting battle? Isn't the point to have the best class you can?

Let's assume that the top 5 players in MI will always be coveted by M, MSU, and probably a few other schools. Let's say that M gets 3 and MSU gets 2, but MSU gets a bunch of the 5-20 ranked kids while M pulls in Jabrill Peppers, George Campbell, Da'Shawn Hand, Damien Harris, and all the rest of the 5*. Couldn't one argue that MSU "won the battle for the state of MI?" But why is that relevant if you don't account for the overall strength of the class?

Two thoughts (I'm not really advocating this, just kind of thinking out loud about why in-state recruiting is considered important):

1. Reliability of recruiting. Landing 5* kids from out of state is awesome, but a football program probably can't live and die on pulling in your Campbells, Peppers, etc. every year. Being able to rely on landing the top kids in your state really helps maintain a steady stream of talent.

2. The zero-sum nature of recruiting. In the case where two programs are competing in the same state, landing good in-state kids not only helps your team, but it hurts your opponent. Michigan landing in-state recruits keeps them away from MSU. Michigan abandoning recruiting in-state to focus out of state hands MSU an influx of extra talent.

M isn't (and hasn't) relied on the Peppers Et al, but instead fills the talent pool with Ohio, Michigan, Illinois etc, kids. If you think of recruiting as picking pieces out of a bag, Michigan has a much larger bag to draw from than State does.

GoBlueInNYC

August 6th, 2013 at 5:00 PM ^

That was exactly my point. Michigan has built the foundation of their recruiting classes by pulling in the top local recruits every year. Which highlights why locking down in-state recruiting is important.

You need one QB a year and I don't see a problem with taking a project(and it seems pretty clear the coaches see him this way) if he A) has talent, B) goes to a feeder school and C) could fit the system.  With Borges talking about the cool pistol/read option things the NFL was doing, Campbell could be a really good fit.

looking like it will be small AND we're getting in with a lot of elite national players for that class, we don't have to pursue an aggressive in-state effort.  That doesn't mean we want to ignore MIchigan at all.  It just means 2015 is a year where we can probably let some players go that maybe in 2012 or 2013 we might have needed.  The bottom line is always filling our own needs each year with the best players possible regardless of where they come from.
