Will We Keep Anything From Hoke Era? Legacy Jerseys? Calling Them "Ohio"?

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

In addition to the flat-out stupid stuff - not wearing a headset, clapping like a seal, losing to every team as soon as they join the B1G - the Brady Hoke Era brought us the following innovations:

- Legacy Jerseys (although this was more of a Brandon idea)

- Numbering the teams (Team 135, etc.)

- Calling them "Ohio."

When he's gone, will any of these endure? I see the team-numbering one sticking around, "Ohio" will go away immediately, and legacy jerseys will be gone as soon as the current jersey-holders graduate. What say you?

Yes, could you imagine if Desmond and Charles were never allowed to establish their own legendary numbers from the beginning?  What if they were #87 and #48, numbers that had already had identities before them?  And then those numbers go back in the legends pile for the next time around.

I don't mind the team number but quit bringing up the past so much. I think it's important the kids understand our history, but why do they need to be reminded they have won 42 B1G championships when not one single kid has even played in the b1G title game. Keep the legends jerseys retired. Issue the #1 and #2 regularly, like Bo said, THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM. Quit calling Osu Ohio, that's another university for Christ sake. Overall, quit living in the past.

I really don't like the pressure it puts on kids to wear a number of Heisman winners or at least potential winners. Let them make their own legacy.  If a kid wears the #98 and is very successful, will he always be remembered as the lesser 98? Let the kids make their own #. Paint a patch on the field if you want to honor #s or ring of honor.

Legacy Jerseys should be taken away. Most important reason being that, save for maybe Jake Ryan, absolutely no one on this team deserves to wear the jersey number of our all time greats. Second reason being that its just one more way of seeing how this program lives in the past. Retire the jerseys and keep them that way. Let current players forge their own legacies with their own numbers. If Funchess stays, I hope whatever coach who comes in rips that 1 jersey right off his back and tells him if he wants it back, he's got to earn it on the field. Same goes for Countess.

I don't mind the team numbers. If that stays, that's fine.

Ugh, I've hated that "Ohio" term for a while. Just call them that school down south. If our new coach says anything about being a Michigan Man in his intro press conference, I might just cry.

(business or otherwise) rallies around a standard/aspiration of values and performance. Hoke has done a damn good job of recruiting around a theme of tradition/values and the next coach will inherit a roster of kids on the same page. He's failed at translating it to wins but that doesn't mean the foundation is faulty. I like the team number for this reason, I like the Michigan Man standard for the same reason. All the rest, from legend jerseys that were prematurely awarded to guys who never lived up to the expectation to bullshit criticisms of headsests and polo shirts I can do without.

The two wins against ND, Gibbons FG against Sparty (although his image is pretty much destroyed) squeaking out that win against OSU in year one and the Roundtree catch against Northwestern which took place right in front of me.

Everything else can rot in hell.

I hope the numbering of the teams and the Ohio thing is gone. This year haven't heard much about the numbering though whereas last year he seemed to reference it all the time.

I will say that I don't mind the "Ohio" thing , especially if it bothers OSU fans :)

Keeping the legacy jerseys a one game/ year thing, maybe give them to deserving seniors on homecoming or something like that.

I do like the idea of keeping the numbers un-retired, because out of sight, out of mind.  How many people really notice that a certain number is not on the roster?  Seeing the jersey on the field with the patch, at least 1/year would keep that player or player's history  'fresh' , so to speak.

Re calling that school down south "Ohio". For as long as I've been alive, the crowd has chanted at the end of the last home game immediately prior to the OSU game "Beat Ohio!" This is not something that Hoke simply made up. But, I'd use it only the way it's always been used: for a chant at the penultimate game of the season.

As for the Legends Jerseys, I can take it or leave it, but on balance, I'd prefer that (i) No 1 and No 2 get retired in due course and (ii) the Legends Jerseys are trotted out at Homecoming, and used only for that game once each season.

I'd sh*tcan the alternate/throwback/special jerseys for all time, but I know I'm spitting into the wind on that one.

Get rid of the patches, get rid of the RAWK music, never use alternate jerseys again. Special numbers on Homecoming or the last home game. Definitely agree with not using the term "Michigan man". Just call them the Buckeyes or Ohio State.

Unfortunately, all this means nothing if the team was winning. 20 point underdogs seemed unthinkable at the beginning of the season.

I am an Ohio State fan. I hope you guys keep the Legacy Jerseys. Your QB wearing 98 looks stupid. It might look cool if you guys would actually win. Your coach not wearing a headset and short sleeves again might seem cool or tough if you guys actually won. I don't mind you guys calling us Ohio. It might be taken as an insult if you guys actually beat us more than once a decade. But it just sounds like my little brother calling me a name just to try to get a rise outta me cuz that's all he's got in his arsenal. But what I hope you guys really keep is the fact that you guys just can't compete with us any longer. I laugh when I see people posting on here that you guys are turning the corner in this rivalry. All I see is big time recruits decimmitting from your school and THE Ohio State University continually getting commits from big time recruits. Ok take your best shots. Call me a troll. Call me what you will. I take great pleasure in your agony. Go Bucks! Beat That Team Up North!
