Will Equipment Sales Be Criminal or Bury OSU?
Why? If OSU claims no knowledge of this system of 'help yourself,' Pryor is responsible for the theft of thousands of dollars worth of supplies. If OSU finds it to be a rogue manager or coach, the school will be DIRECTLY reponsible for providing extra benefits to player(s) and would come with way harsher a penalty from the NCAA.
While OSU might be able to find some loophole for Pryor to repay the amount, I'd bet OSU's student handbook will be applied against TP rather quickly to distance him from the program should an audit prove claims true.
Just a secondary storyline to keep an eye on...
I agree. That particular revelation is one reason I don't call the SI article a disappointment. No wonder the dude thinks everybody steals. Looking forward to seeing what happens when the NCAA pulls that string.
I wonder what stories Pryor could tell in court (or to the media, more likely) if OSU backed him into a corner.
You will never hear an HONEST word of contrition come out of Pryor's mouth.
And if push comes to shove he'd take anyone at OSU down if he has to.
He was a good player but a bad person. Maybe a kid, but a self-centered kid. He's gone and good riddance. I used to believe he would have been a good get for Coach Rodriguez, and maybe he would have been a better player and person in Ann Arbor. But now I'm glad he didn't.
... you probably don't have to go back too far to see me commenting on how Pryor is an idiot but I would have loved to have him the past 3 years. Man, I lost my moral compass on that one. Glad to be proven wrong, though.
It will be interesting, and a good point. If he had permission to take whatever, that's something of a problem, yes? I'm sure it was arranged, but doubt that'll actually come out. Perhaps one of the reasons for reports before the article actually came online that Pryor's days may be done. I thought it amazing that he showed up to the Tressel farewell tonight in a 350z with temp plates per twitter. As though he's asking to be dismissed, really.
If they do "distance" themselves from Pryor, at least he can go pro, unlike Clarrett. Amazing similarities between the two to watch potentially develop here though.
even if he did it with consent from someone. The agreement between 2 people to commit an illegal act just means you get to add a criminal conspiracy to the indictment.
You have to have intent to wrongfully deprive someone of property in order to committ theft. If someone with actual or apparent authority gave him permission to take the stuff, there's no criminal intent.
No one has authority to give away functional state property to enrich an individual. The exception is when the property is disposed of because it is being replaced and then it can't be given to a single person for his benefit against the benefit of Ohio. Further, since giving extra benefits is prohibited by the NCAA, you can't even pretend that someone had apparent authority to give him equipment.
The only way you get off on this charge is if you aren't competent to stand trial.
It's not like the university can just say they didn't know he was stealing equipment though. Equipment isn't cheap, and somebody is responsible for keeping track of it. I think it's possible that both of these things happen, but Pryor's comment saying he gets whatever he wants leads me to believe that the staff knew damn well that he was taking it. Personally, I hate Pryor more that TSIO. Well, maybe not, but it's a different kind of hate.
I was wondering when the IRS was going to get involved. There was a lot money and gifts "paid" to players which I'm positive they didn't fill out the proper IRS forms.
Once someone lists Pryor on their 1040EZ as a Dependant
If given the choice, I see them having no issue with throwing Pryor under the bus if it means salvaging even the most miniscule piece of the program, but I would imagine the university would still be labelled as complicit in it.
I work in the equipment room at UConn, and it's not like any body can walk into the locked equipment room and just take whatever they want. I'm sure things are a little bit different at "That school down south" but chances are the equipment is locked anyhow.
So with all the new shenanigans coming to light, does the NCAA put a hold on the August 12th hearings and reopen their investigation? Or do they continue with the hearings as planned while opening a new investigation in the latest infractions and hold a separate hearing later in 2011 or early 2012?
Have to admit I'm torn between wanting all this to come to an end soon to find out how badly the Bucks are about to get hit and wanting this thing to drag on for years of negative press and pain until finally the big hammer finally falls.
This does open up some new possible worlds of shit for TSIO. I agree with a lot of the posters here. My take is that if TSIO does diistance themselves from Pryor like they did Clarett, that Pryor won't be intimidated into shutting his mouth like Clarett was, and his ego just might get him so pissed that he tells everything to the NCAA.
TSIO is still counting on the Scarlet Wall of Deinal when the NCAA investigators get to Columbus. They are counting on everyone involved to believe the "sacred brotherhood" crap. If that doesn't work, the Olentangy Mafia will make a few well-placed threats.
I think Pryor is so arrogant that he will ignore the threats to his personal well-being and tell the NCAA everything if TSIO throws him under the bus. TSIO got lucky with Maurice Clarett. They both threw him under the bus and demanded loyalty. Pryor will probably tell TSIO that loyalty and disloyalty goes both ways, and that he owes them nothing.
He'll probably blame TSIO for "ruining his senior season." I don't know if we'll eventually see the sanctions TSIO deserves, but I have a feeling we will see some pretty heavy punishment. All it takes is for one player to be honest with the NCAA. Just one.
I have no doubt that tosu will come down hard on Pryor--just as soon as they conclude that freshman Braxton Miller can step in and play well at QB this year and confirm that he doesn't have any tatoos or drive a Chrysler 300.
and get Jon Falk to comment on this. I'd love to hear from him on this particular subject.
