Will Durkin Take Any Coaches With Him?

Submitted by Shakespeare on

It doesn't seem likely he'll bring any defensive position coaches with him as almost all have direct connections to JH, but with the traffic jam atop our offensive coaching ranks it wouldn't surprise me if say Jedd Fisch went with him to Maryland to become OC and we promoted T.J. Weist to Passing Game Coordinator/WR Coach.

With all the discussion about who our next DC should be, I felt it might get lost that we could end up with one or two more vacancies on staff.

Agreed. I thought Durkin's inexperience (seemingly) on offense would keep him here, spending 2-3 years learning OC from Harbaugh before grabbing an HC position.

He'll have to make sure to grab a great OC.

But c'mon, these things very well could have been lined up sometime in October for all we know.

Under typical university endowment assumptions, the principal needs to be at least 20 times the annual draw, so to cover just Edsall's $2.1 million salary would require a $40+ million endowment. UA's doing good, but I doubt they have that kind of cash laying around to invest in UMD football.

Even though their founder has an outright majority stake I doubt their shareholders would be too happy about giving away the tiny profits UA currently generates to fund a football HC job at a primarily basketball school. Nike's support for Oregon mostly comes from marketing, arguably increasing Nike's own bottom line for UO sales. Phil Knight as an individual has donated $300M.

Now if we're talking about Kevin Plank, I'm not sure he's liquid enough to be able to commit $100M or whatever amount it's going to take to endow an entire football staff for the forseeable future.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised, but I don't think that will happen. Maryland wants a spread offense, who coaches spread on our offensive staff? He won't take the DB coaches or Mattison so I doubt he'll even consider offering them jobs

Fisch will probably end up leaving for the NFL. Besides, Harbaugh is a QB specialist so that's the least of our worries. I'm most interested in our next LB coach. That's a coaching position that clearly needs the most help.
