Will Brandon Address Morris Topic?

Submitted by davidhm on

In the wake of yesterday's fiasco, we've obviously heard from Coach Hoke. However, we've not heard from Dave Brandon.  I didn't expect him to necessarily hold a press conference, but I did expect him to release a statement.

While most are calling for a press conference to announce the firing of Hoke on Monday - which I would not be against - what are the chances we get a statement/release from Brandon on Monday to address the issue with Morris' playing while visibly injured?

I personally do not expect anything on Monday, but I do expect the silence to reach "deafening" proportions by weeks end and Brandon will have to take to the podium or at least grant an interview with a loal journalist.  Especially as more local journalists criticize Hoke's player management and safety.

his own resignation.  "Due to incompetence, micromanagement and insatiable desire to be in charge and in the limelight...I am resigning as AD of Michigan" - Dave Brandon

where he has to win to keep his job. Previously he had the benefit of the doubt.

This team isn't beating anybody on the schedule. We suck-diddly-yuck, Flanders.

It's pretty funny in Bradys first season when we were winning DB was everywhere, seeking the cameras out. Fast forward to today, the state of the program and he is nowhere to be found.

Even if Brandon doesn't address it, which he won't. Hoke will get grilled on it tomorrow at his press conference. Honestly though, no one should even bother showing up to Hoke's conferences. Says the same damn thing every week:

-Great week of practice.
-We're not talking about injuries.
-Our goal of a BTT is still attainable.
-We're competing hard.
-We're not talking about injuries.

The end. Did I mention we're not talking about injuries?

DB would say nothing.

Hoke would say: Shane is a tough kid.. A wonderful kid.. He waived off and wanted to play. That shows his heart. His physicalness, toughness is amazing. He is fine. Tough football player. We don't talk about injuries. So, I can't tell you if he will play this Saturday. But Shane is a good football player. He had a great spring and fall.

Nothing more.

About the loss: All our goals are in still in front of us. We just have to execute, I tell you. Look at the way they prepared. Wonderful kids. Tough, Tough kids. We will be fine. We will have a great practice and play hard next week. We will be fine.

GM about the loss:

You don't know what we do behind doors. That guy is such a great coach. He loves those players. We need to play better and generate more Turn Overs. Our goal should be that we get a turn over and score every possession. That is our goal and we are working hard to get that.

Nuss about the loss:

F it. I am done working with these clowns. This place is nuts. I am out of here. Saban is God. Hoke needs to suck it.

This one is pretty much entirely on Hoke. Hoke is toast and for all of his flaws, Brandon is aware of how this plays out for Hoke. I wouldn't expect Brandon to do anything except to try to save his own ass at this point. That means talking to the $ men/regents/presidents and finding out if it is viable to let Hoke finish the season before letting him go. Brandon will be reactive rather than proactive and make his decision based on what the other stakeholders force him to do. Brandon is nothing if not a man of practicality rather than principal. His play is probably to let Hoke stand up and take the heat, tell Hoke to apologize for making a mistake, have Hoke talk about how much he cares about his players and continue his pathetic claim of ignorance that Morris had a head injury. Hoke will claim he was aware of Morris' leg injury but did not see the concussion symptoms. It's not a credible position; but the alternative is to admit that he knowingly threw Morris back in the came after sustaining and that admission would have to result in a firing (or indefinite suspension that ends in a firing).  So Hoke stills to his incompetence over negligence excuse. Brandon will also announce new policies regarding concussion processes and player protection and instigate an investigation. The results of the investigation will be released at some indistinct later date after the furor has died down. It will be done by press release rather than a press conference.

Or...if you want to be more cynical...Brandon throws Hoke under the bus. This makes Brandon look, to outsiders, like he is taking a strong ethical stand on player safety. It also allows him to put in motion the search for a permanent replacement immediately while he is still employed as the athletic director. Thereby making it a bit more difficult for the Regents to fire him. Harder to fire the guy who "protected the players." and makes it more difficult to have a schedule that would require going through an AD search process prior to conducting the coaching search process. Thereby he retains decision making power over who the next coach is to the greatest extent possible. Maybe. He might still get shit canned too. But it's less likely than it would be if he sticks with Hoke. It's at least one way to play it. Every man for himself as this ship sinks quickly.
