Will Beilein End Up Winning Here?

Submitted by mwolverineforlife on

The team is young, and will most likely struggle this year.  When they do grow up, will Beilein have sucess?  I have a teacher who played women's basketball at Le Moyne, I think.  But wherever it was, she was there at the same time Beilein was.  She has seen Beilein run a practice, and according to her, he knows what he's doing as a coach.  Will he succeed at Michigan?

1.  Yes, I think you can tell Beilein does finally have his type of players.  Manny and Deshawn were not.  Smotrycz I feel exemplifies this - big man with skills who can shoot and looks like a basketball player.  Once we add some additional guards who can drive/put pressure on the defense, which it appears our incoming recruits do, the system will start to click.

2.  Size - nice to have to have two bigs starting with Smotrycz and Morgan.  Must have in the Big Ten.

3.  Facilities - definitely will help.

4.  Track record - he has done it everywhere he has been.

My concern has been recruiting - I think he is turning the corner here and I am sure facilities must help.  But the Big Ten is talented and we have to have talent to compete.  He can be a great coach but basketball is a talent game and you have to have players to compete.  But I can see the core taking shape with Morgan, Smotrycz, Hardaway and Morris.

I doubt it.  The board here has determined recently that ex-WVU coaches forget how to win once they arrive and that condition can't be changed unfortunately.

Circumstances be damned...this is MICHIGAN for God's sake.

I think so. Give him another year with this current roster and they could be scary. I have heard it said this is the first team he hass had at Michigan that is made to realy run his system. He has a true point gaurd in Morrice and Novack isn't playing out of position anymore. Not this year probably but next we should probably see the tournament.

With 189 points (at the time of this thread) a bit of orientation might be in order.

1.  All opinions are welcome as long as they are well articulated.

2.  Yes, most of us are grammar nazis.

3.  Unlike most blog sites, we actually try to understand each others points - even if we disagree with them.

4.  We do disagree with some.

5.  Name calling accomplishes nothing here - with the possible exception of not allowing us to take you seriously.  We are kind of a family.  You wouldn't do that to family (I hope).  Avoid it here.

Again, welcome.

I certainly think he has a lot of time to prove himself because everyone (DB included probably) is more focused on getting football back on track than basketball

Besides, it's always a good idea to fire coaches before they have the time to fully implement their system.

coming in was whether he'd be able to recruit well enough to build a consistent winner.  It sucked finishing 2nd for Prather, Zeigler, and Pointer, but I think he's largely answered that question in the affirmative.  Smotrycz and Hardaway look like the real deal, and Burke and Brundidge are both excellent recruits.  As long as he can continue to recruit 2-3 top 100 guys a year, I absolutely think he will win here.

We play like we did yesterday consistently we have a shot at an NCAA bid.  Clemson at Clemson is a tough win.  Being stranded out here in NC I get to see the ACC teams all the time.  Don't underestimate what they did last night.  Even the ACC folks out here were impressed.  And they're as arrogant as Buckeye fans...

I think he needs some time to get his people in place.  Within four years, he should be competing for the MNC on an annual basis.  Oh wait, we're talking basketball.  Sorry.

Well he's finally starting to get some good recruiting classes. His first few years recruiting classes, well lets just say they could have been better. I love stu douglass and zach novak, however, you won't be winning a lot of games with a team full of players like them. I like to consider them "position" or "situational" players. They help the team, but will never be stars. This years class (that just came in) and the next two classes look to be full of potential and I'm finally starting to see his vision for our team, which is definitely a good thing.

I think he will win at Michigan for sure. He has a young team that looks very promising. He obviously has the respect of former NBA players. I think we have an outside chance at the tourney this year.

I really think he will begin to catch up as DB begins to turn his attention back to basketball. And he's mentioned already that Michigan needs to upgrade the basketball facilities. I think this would be a big help in terms of recruiting.

As others mentioned, the improved facilities will help quite a bit, as will wins in high-profile early-season tournaments.  Making a run in the NIT/NCAA tournament also wouldn't hurt, but he is having an incredibly young team play pretty well so far.  I do think one underrated element is the fact that a couple of big-time NBA players are sending their kids to UM - that not only puts the team a bit higher on the radar of some kids, but is a great ice-breaker for the parents and coaches of these recruits.  If Tim Hardaway trusts Coach B, the logic goes, then so should you.

John Beilein knows his X's and O's when it comes to hoops.  Yes, he will most certainly be a winning coach at Michigan...in my opinion, he already has and will only continue to improve with recruits like Brundidge and Burke.

He does not need to win.  That is not his job.  Just don't cheat.  That is what he is getting paid to do.  And if you think differently, you are under the age of 25.  ?Sorry.  Questions?  Fab 5 didn't go over so well.  Michigan is a football school.

Oh yeah. Dude's been a proven winner wherever he's gone. I posted in the Clemson open thread, the fact that in 2 years, this team is going to be scary good. Their starting lineup is 1 Junior, 1 Sophomore, and 3 Freshmen. And none of those guys (save maybe Hardaway Jr.) is an EE-threat.
