Will this affect recruiting?

Submitted by The Shredder on
I go away for two days and I come back and world is coming to an end on Mgoblog. Do I think this is a big deal as many do? No. I think this could pass over once the season starts but my real question is does this affect recruiting? Will anyone decommit? Will anyone see this as another shot in RR's back and cool on us? Will this scare players away since they may get the idea we run a boot camp and not a football program? All good questions. P.S I worked my foot clan for 60hr a week and that's well over the slot ninja code. We are not the most feared Slot Ninja clan because we do follow the rules. edit: I am an idiot

although somewhat incorrect in this circumstance (it depends on how you read the sentence..), the OP could have been correct in others when using "effect" as a verb. It's a lesser known meaning:
* Main Entry: 2effect * Function: transitive verb * Date: 1533 1 : to cause to come into being 2 a : to bring about often by surmounting obstacles : accomplish <effect a settlement of a dispute> b : to put into operation <the duty of the legislature to effect the will of the citizens>

effect you mean helping it, sure. If I'm 18, convinced I'm headed to the NFL, have the chance to work with the best S&C coach in the country for 3-4 years at one of the biggest names in college football, I'd be chomping at the bit to sign at Michigan. Jesus, I would WANT football to be a full time job. If you're a pussy, go to Northwestern. Or Duke.

IMO, it easily could. "Hey Marvin Robinson, come and play for me, Rich Rod will get fired w/ in 2 years. Do you want to play for a team who could be facing NCAA penalties of God knows what... plus who says you're new coach will play you? Hey Devin Gardner, what if your new coach in 2 years wants to bring in his own QB." Remember how Donovan Warren mentioned how he liked the security of Michigan... something to the affect of Michigan will promote from within when Lloyd steps down. I believe kids look for coach security when they accept a scholorship quite often.

i consider myself to be extremely naive but c'mon, there is no way that news like this doesn't negatively affect recruiting. and there's absolutely no way to think that this actually helps recruiting. it's just more bad press. but what does help recruiting, is winning. if we win then these stories don't come out.

I think it will weed out a lot of guys who don't wanna bust their ass to come play at Michigan. That said, there are a lot of talented guys out there who are gonna be weeded out. That doesn't necessarily mean they're pussies, but maybe hearing about "Torture Tuesdays" and the like isn't exactly what they were thinking. Yes, football really is a full-time job at any major D1 school. Yes, GPAs were higher last year than ever before. But I wonder if we're at the extreme end of training. I never read or focused on or cared much about offseason training and working out at this school or any other until last season so I don't know what it's been like. I just don't want kids or their parents from thinking we're too "hardcore" to want to play here, that's all.

everything effects recruiting but it will depend on the recruit to whether it is positive or negative. If all of a sudden everyone is talking about UM across the country then, your name is going to be brought up a lot in conversation especially when that may be the university your strongly considering. Obviously that extra fame comes at a cost though, depending on how seriously the recruit takes the information. It will also get factored into negative recruiting from other universities.

only if UM does badly this year. there won't be any punishment (i don't think) so if Michigan were to go like 8-4/9-3 or something (even 7-5 with say, a couple last second losses) something like this wouldn't affect them. another bad season though...

effect: this is typically used as a noun, as in "I achieved the effect I wanted." In can also mean to bring something about, as in "I want to effect change in America." affect: this is typically used as a verb, as in "will this affect recruiting?" affect can also mean the way you act, as in "his manner was affected." This post uses the word correctly, in other words.

I think it will help build Michigan's reputation into that of a place you go if you want to bust your ass and get to the next level. It also builds on the legend that is Barwis. That only works, of course, if there are no real violations or sanctions. I hope and believe this will be the case. But if I were a four or five star kid trying to figure out what school will best help me get to the NFL, I would think this is a positive. Yes, some players will go elsewhere, but on net I think the harder working players with the most potential will consider it a plus. And we are way better off if the players who do not want to work very hard go somewhere else.

But most articles I've seen show most recruits blown away by Barwis. I think if you weigh these allegations against current NFL players that come back to work out at Michigan, it's a draw at worst.
