Why not keep Charlie Weis?

Submitted by Hoken's Heroes on
Interesting article in Forbes of all places. As much as I'd like to see Charlie fired, I am not so sure that ND will do so. Who exactly do they have to choose from? And will they want to fork over many millions to Charlie? Might be in their best interest to keep him around since he's a known quantity. Putting someone else in and going through the same crap won't make things any better for the Golden Domers. http://www.forbes.com/2009/11/23/notre-dame-football-business-sports-we…

Going into this season, I have heard from so called experts (BEANO COOK for one) that ND had to win at least 9 games and get a BCS BOWL to ensure Weis' employment at ND as the HC. Obviously, ND failed on all accounts with a schedule that many described as easy. Now that ND has seen the season fall apart with one game remaining against Stanford, most now expect he'll lose his job. But again, will ND want to try and start from scratch again? A new coach most likely will mean the departure of many key players leaving ND exposed at many positions, especially at the QB position. Maybe keeping Weis one more year to ensure that Clausen and others stay for the hope they finally put together a dominant showing is what will save Weis from getting fired? Just a wild thought.

35-26 record at Notre Dame, not to mention a 1-3 bowl record with the only win coming over Hawaii. I think that justifies his firing. Notre Dame boosters have deep pockets I'm sure.

Did anyone else see his bat shit insane press conference in which he said something to the effect of, "If I were in charge I would make a change". So he thinks he should be fired, but he refuses to resign. Weisian logic at its finest.

A guy at work is big into ND. The talk among those he knows (not sure if they're all THAT connected) is that Charlie stays 1 more year. I called BS when he said it was because Jimmah won't come back w/o Charlie same for a bunch of other players. Told him that Jimmah is 1st round pick and he isn't gonna waste that money on Charlie and that the AD could give 2 shits what a bunch of college students think.

I say they should keep that fat bastard. He is 2-3 against us, he has held his team to mediocrity in spite of great recruiting classes, and while we are most certain to get better next year he is bound to be a big fat tub of lard who blames all of his problems on bad calls by the ref and accuses others of cheating. If he stays they should be an easy win next year, but we all know the pollsters are bound to love them becasue they are ND and it will do nothing but boost our team's confidence and win us a few points with the pollsters as well. I say build a statue of that front-butt looking baboon out in front of the school and change the name of the school to Gastric Bypass U.

Weis' ridiculous deal is such a complete millstone to Notre Dame they really can't so easily get rid of him. Deep pockets or not there are not many donors coming up with that sort of money. See you next September Charlie Weis.

Todd Blackledge made an interesting point today on Cowherd (I never listen, it was a rare day I could go out and get lunch and I though Blackledge would be interesting.) I have extrapolated it a little further: Notre Dame is 6-5 and has some of the highest academic standards of an FBS program and lost to one of its archrivals this year due to some baffling late game coaching decisions (Weis also currently boasts a 96% graduation rate according to NBC, but take that for what it's worth.) Stanford is 7-4 and has some of the highest academic standards of an FBS program and lost to one of its archrivals this year due to some baffling late game coaching decisions. If Notre Dame can go out to the Farm and beat Stanford, both teams would be 7-5. And yet, this would likely get Charlie Weis canned and makes Jim Harbaugh one of the up and coming coaches in FBS. (Admittedly, this is Year 5 of the Weis project and Year 3 of Harbaugh) Long way around this, it comes down to expectations. Weis was expected to be in the Top Ten and he has not. Harbaugh was expected to be competitive and by whipping USC (for the second time in three years), he's now "building something".

ND. Notre Dame is a winning football program and it does not like losing programs. Unfortunately for Notre Dame they have not been a good football program for a while now. But Weis losing to Michigan capped his career there.

...it would make the ND game easier once UM has the horses to make a national dent. And it is always great to laugh at Charlie Weis; there are so many reasons to that it is also easy. Weis is one of those people whose very presence begs for cheap shots. For example: Did you hear about the new ND conditioning program? They have a choice: run around the stadium ten times or run around Weis once.

weiss is the classic great coordinator who doesn't have what it takes to make it as a head coach. if notre dame can afford to fire him, they definitely should. there are plenty of great options out there for them.
