Why I want Brandon to hire the next coach

Submitted by massblue on

Here is my case why is it is better for DB to hire the next coach and then step down.

Schlissel has no experience with big time sports. He may select an AD with little background in big time sports.  I believe the AD hired by Schlissel will be asked to bring a clean cut coach who is not going to embarrass the school.  I do not think the mandate would be to go out there pay as much as you want and hire a dynamic coach that can win.

For example, if Jim Kelly, Urban and even Harbaugh were available, I do not believe the next AD would hire them -- too risky for Schlissel.

If DB is still around to hire the next coach, then I believe he will do whatever he can to bring a winner and money will be no problem (or almost).  The next hire will be his legacy and he is as competitive as the next guy and will want to be remembered as a winner.

I think the best scenario would be for DB to stay for another year, bring a winner and then step down.  I am very worried that the next AD would select a very conservative coach from a small time program (e.g., Ivy league).

Edit: My reference to Kelly, Urban or Harbaugh meant as examples of on field winners with some off field issues.

Your entire premise is irrelevant (Schlissel has no experience with big time sports).

On a side note, how exactly is Harbaugh either risky or have off-field issues?

Have you not listened to what John U bacon has been saying? No coach worth his salt wants to work for Dave Brandon. That's straight from John Bacon. That is all we have to know about if Dave Brandon can I hire a high-profile coach if he remains the athletic department head.

So you're imagining a thought process by a big name coach that goes like this:

"Well, I don't trust the guy hiring me but he won't be around long. Then they'll hire someone else who I probably don't know at all. That seems like a good bet! I'll take it!"

Yeah, no.

"For example, if Jim Kelly, Urban and even Harbaugh were available, I do not believe the next AD would hire them -- too risky for Schlissel."

(1) Urban???

(2) Why would any of those individuals pick up the phone when their assistant says "David Brandon on line 1"?  Would you take a job offer from a supervisor you knew was about to be fired?

(3) Would you take a job offer from a supervisor who publicly behaved like David Brandon?

Brandon failed in hiring a football coach because brand was more important than substance.  Hoke was hired for what he was saying not for what he was doing.  Hoke talked about ForGoshSakesThisIsMichigan, I want to run power football with statues in the pocket throwing to  receivers with fat butts, spread is for sissys, we do it the MIchigan way.   This got him in good graces with our decayed royalty that hated the barbarian R^2.  But with R^2 players graduating out there is no one left with real football skills.

In my opinion Brandon would be looking for the attributes to maximize propaganda and short term excitement.  I want an AD who is not  worried about style, but who looks to hire the best football coach.  Understood that coach has to be in line with the ethics that we expect.  But the first question that has to be asked is that coach a real coach, not a salesman.

Why you're confident Brandon would make a good hire given the body of work we're able to evaluate.

I also have no idea why you're confident a big-time head coach would want to come to UM with Brandon running the ship.

I mean... maybe (to both ideas), but DB's not getting any benefit of the doubt from me anymore.

Why wouldn't you want the new AD to hire the new coach? He/she could have more experience hiring successful D1 coaches than Brandon.

It doesn't have to be the President.

...didn't think that one all the way through, did ya? Maybe we should take a break from immediately making threads with every thought that pops in our heads.

Why I want to take a large hammer and repeatidly smash it into my balls

Because after i am finished slamming the large hammer into my balls the fucking thought of Dave Fucking Brandon hiring our next HC won't seem so painful anymore.

Seriously OP - do you honestly believe this crap or is it just a trolling ploy to see how many people you can drive insane?

President:  Okay Dave, you get to stay one more year so you can hire the new coach.  Just make sure you pick someone good or ... or ... or you're fired next year.

Brandon:  Okay, sounds good.  I'm going to find you someone extra great at coaching.  I'm going to look everywhere.

President:  Perfect, especially since I know nothing about football and even less about the coaches.

Brandon:  Great.  There are a lot of great coaches that haven't been given a chance yet.  In fact, I know a guy that coaches at Sister Mary's College for the Blind who would be perfect.

President:  Really?  That sounds a bit of a stretch.

Brandon:  No, he's great.  He runs an exciting offense (no passing) and his defense is spectacular when opponents run directly at his players.  They never miss a tackle!

President:  Okay, great!  I'm looking forward to working with you one more year.

Your rationale for allowing Brandon to choose Michigan's next coach is exactly why he needs to be fired: he runs an AD that is detached from the University, and makes hiring decisions based on his own agenda.

Schlissel may select an AD with little background in big time sports? You mean like a guy who spend all of his career in business, most recently as the CEO or a major pizza chain?

You believe Schlissel wouldn't want the new AD to possibly bring in coach who might embarrass the school. But he would give free reign in hiring a coach with a shady track record to an AD who has done his best to embarass the school over his tenure, the last week or two even more so? Why would Brandon have more latitude in hiring a risky coach after all the damage he has done recently?

Finally, if Brandon does somehow stay on, does manage to bring in a highly succesful football coach, why in the world would he then step down? You characterize this as his legacy and that he is as competitive as the next guy, so you really believe he would just happily ride off into the sunset next year if he hired a succesful coach? He would want to hang on as long as possible to bask in the glory of how smart he is for finally hiring the right coach.

TL:DR, I am not sure how you actually believe any point you made in your post.

I think the president can figure out who is qualitied to be the next AD. The next guy will have more athletic administration experience than the current guy. Hell I have more experience.
