Chicago or Detroit. Last week a college student at the University of Toledo was stabbed to death over a pack of cigarettes. This stuff is happening everywhere.
Obviously you're more likely to get shot for something expensive, but if someone's homicidal, it probably doesn't matter what they want. Some people just aren't right in the head, or violence is what they grew up knowing, and if you've got a ring-pop they fancy you could catch one in the chest. It's sickening, and it's nothing new.
of the whole story is that the same guy who fatally stabbed the college kid was arrested two years prior for the exact same thing except the person he stabbed then lived. he served two years gets out and does it again. He was mentally unstable. Something is either wrong with our prison/rehabilitation system or with the way we monitor, interact, and treat our mentally ill.
Yeah, there has been a few shootings in the Pullman neighborhood on the south side that have involved 13 and 14 year olds riding their bikes. The shootings aren't for money and really have no known motive. The kids aren't connected, so they think someone is just out there shooting them up for fun. Just another summer day. The only description I've seen is that the shooter is sporting "The Fade".

I read this title and I thought the OP was planning on relocating to Brimley or Tahquemenon. Certainly unlikely to occur in Tawas as well...just saying.
Tahquemenon is a bit too far north. I want to have cell phone service at places other than a gas station 12 miles away from the campsite I stayed at this summer.
There was one incident with a kid and a machete last year in Tawas. Might want to avoid that place.

Nice! Well thats one of the few places to go in that "town" haha, other than the Thunder Bay Inn (awesome pizza there btw). Camping at Perkins were you? Thats what I go there for and also have a cabin about 30 minutes northwest in the huron mt. area.
I also have a camp about 30 min west down the AAA road. That's some rough country up there. I ususally camp at Van Riper with the wife and kids, though as the camp isn't really set up for 3 kids under 7. Is Perkins nice? I may try that one although it's way more out of the way for the wife than Van Riper.
Serious?! My cabin is on the AAA as well! 30 minutes of bumpy dirt road. I love it up there. I grew up going to Perkins quite a bit (back when they had Perkins the Pig lol), and Lake Independence is very nice with some decent fishing. It's been a few years since I camped in that park (generally just head to the cabin), but I always enjoyed it. It's clean has electric and water and has a nice boat dock and good little swimming area. Also a short bike ride to Lake Superior.
Plus Jimmy Stewart filmed a movie there (Anatomy of a Murder). That's why the Thunder Bay Inn got it's name.
Never been to Van Riper though so I can't compare.
1.) Where in that article does it mention jewelry, money, or any motive? It only says he's dead. Further, wasn't he found near a road that he uses as a shortcut to his mother's house, which is in a wooded area which, I'd presume, would mean there aren't a lot of people around looking to run up on a random car to rob it? Am I missing something?
2.) I have spent much time in Memphis (my dad grew up there; I used to live there; my grandparents still do), and i can pretty much assure you, the "bad" parts of Chicago (where I've lived the past few years), LA (where I spent a summer), D.C. (ditto), and Detroit (lived in Ann Arbor for 7 years and can't actually comment firsthand on Detroit, but feel qualified to talk somewhat about its crime by proxy from reading the news there on a daily basis and interacting with people who are actually from Detroit) are no better.
Also, judging by your comment, and this isn't to knock Ypsi, but dude, if you're thinking of "moving north to get away from crime," one wouldn't think that Ypsi would be one of the first two cities you'd name. I mean, there's crime everywhere. Pretty much anywhere where there are people in this country concentrated in an area, there will be crime. Not even just the "bad" areas. There are even random murders, beatings, and burglaries in Chicago's Gold Coast, in Lincoln Park, and other high property value areas throughout the city.

Fair enough. But you do realize that you didn't (at all) mention this non-public information, right? I think, given the brief OP and link you provided, thinking that you wanted to move up north because of crime was a fair assumption.

So, she refused to talk to a van (and how did the van feel about being snubbed, you wonder?), and reporters found out her emotional state because she DIDN'T say anything?

I read that not as saying she did not speak to the van, but rather that she did not speak honestly with the van.

Why would you need a reason like that to move to Ann Arbor? Without turning this into a 'Food in Ann Arbor thread', I'll gloss over that and just say it's awesome and I think we all agree. The only ones that should be getting murdered (figuratively speaking) in A2 are buckeyes wearing pads.
I don't think crime is a "north/south" thing but a population density thing.
There's crime everywhere, but the more dense a population (generally) the higher the crime rate.
Obviously Memphis, Detroit and Chicago all fit this description.
It's likely that this story has less to do with him being in Memphis and more to do with him having some shady acquaintances who thought he was their lotto ticket (like a lot of pro athletes, unfortunately).
I know its been hot up north this summer too but man I can not stand these Louisiana summers. I'd rather be cold for 5 months than have to put up with a 110 degree heat index.
