Why do you hate Ohio?

Submitted by BigTenBurrito on

Erik Swenson, we'll see you in 3 years. Trey Burke, I'm sure you'll be a great NBA pro. Florida's OL, we have enough growing pains of our own for one calendar year. This is the week of the 'THE GAME'

I spent a summer between my freshman and sophomore year there. Everywhere I went I was referred as the 'Michigan' guy as if that's something to be ashamed of. That is all it took for me to forever understand the magnitude of this game. We will win this game, simply because we have to.

It's been two years, but I still remember the feeling when Avery intercepted that pass to end it in the Big House. Must have had my arms in the air for 2 straight minutes before snapping out of my euphoric daze. I crave this feeling again.

Everyone enjoy their holiday because come Saturday, the boys in Maize and Blue will leave it all on the field!

GO BLUE!

I grew up in Ohio, the son of a Michigan alum. Getting cursed out by strangers as a child for wearing a Michigan shirt taught me everything I needed to know about that "school" in Columbus at an early age.

Being from Canada, the whole rival hate thing was never experienced until I started college.  Even then, I never hated them b/c that was the Cooper years and we won.

Then the Tressell era started.  I began to resent the losses.  It culminated for me in 2009 when I sat in a sea of Red and listened to those OSU fans chant in our house.

That is when I finally learned to dislike Ohio State - not the school, but that fan base that feeds it's lying, cheating big business sports machine.

Their state smells.

It has two major cities and both of them are lame.

OSU is the one thing Ohio folks can hang their hat on, but they don't know it. Everyone else knows it. In typical bizzaro world fashion they call this, "jealousy."

Their fans are rabid and dumb in most cases, which the entire Big Ten is in agreement about according to all the opposing fans I've hosted at tailgates.

Their heroic coaches are:

1. A guy who punched a kid in the face.

2. Another guy who cheated and then also covered it up.

3. A guy who had "health issues," which in reality meant a disinterest in enduring any hardship.

But hey, "everybody steals, everybody murders." Ohio should plaster that quote up on the toilet bowl. Could be their Tebow speech.

As my wife and I were walking into the Big House on that November day we were behind a group of buckeye fans, and one of them was going on about how We're going to give the ball to our All-American  running back Eddie George who will have the All-American tackle Orlando Pace blocking for him... If they stop that we'll throw the ball to our All-American tight end Ricky Dudley, if he's covered there's always our All-American WR Terry Glenn.... we can't lose....

That was when I spoke up... and said... Hey! this is Michigan and Ohio State this is the Rivalry Game I promise you this team will be ready to play...  The buckeye fans dismissed me as just another Wolverine crank....

You all know what happened that day... Biakbuta ran wild on the OSU Defense and the young freshman Charles Woodson established himself as a force by intercepting a Terry Glenn target in the end zone to kill an OSU drive before the half and we never looked back... I will got to my grave with the fourth quarter memory of Tim Biakabutka running for a first down to ice the game carrying three OSU defenders on his back... I swear that the sun broke through a cloud and the rays shined down on Number 21 as he rushed for 313 yards that day...

I never felt more vindicated in my life, '95was a disappointing season to say the least but beating OSU on that Saturday afternoon lessened the bitterness of that season..

That being said Tressell with his smarmy cocksucker look drove my hatred of the Buckeye's to new levels of hatred. Re-sodding the toilet bowl 1 week before the 2006 game rates as one of the crappiest things ever done to gain a home field advantage..

Screw this... Oh How I Hate Ohio State!

GO BLUE! Beat the Bucks!

But now, I'm just fucking jealous! May be it is a form of Hate. Not sure why there has been some sort of curse on our team since the end of LC era. I thought Hoke would break this curse, but I'm not sure any longer. We are going to get pummeled! Our team looks like a scared kitten on the  verge of meeting a pit bull!

Everywhere I went I was referred as the 'Michigan' guy as if that's something to be ashamed of.

There's never a reason to be ashamed for being the "Michigan Guy" (regardless of the outcome on the football field). Here's how you know this:

Did you/are you going to college? (Y/N?)

Yes - Good

Does/will your diploma have the word "Michigan" in it?  (Y/N?)

Yes - Good

Does it also have the word "State" in it?  (Y/N?)

No - Very Good

And you're certain that nowhere on there appears the word "Ohio"? (Y/N?)

Yes - You Win

It's actually really interesting to think about. I have never "hated" Ohio State like most fans. I don't like them, and I always want to beat them, but I don't "hate" them. My hate is reserved for Michigan State. I think it has to do with growing up near EL and many of my friends and family being MSU fans. If Michigan loses to MSU I'm going to hear about it a lot more than if they lose to OSU.

That said...Beat Ohio.

I second your post. I can typically handle a loss to OSU (though it has been way too frequent the last 10 years or so) as at least they're traditionally good. I won't root for either in the Big Ten Champ game, but if it's close in the 4th quarter, I will find myself pulling for OSU...I won't be able to take all of the Sparty chatter.

I've had to endure complete and utter embarrassment at the hand of this rivalry for over a decade now.

In the meantime their program just seems to reload, and we can't even keep our head above water.

The biggest reason I hate Ohio State right now is they don't even treat this rivalry with the same respect anymore because they don't have to.  I know I used to get shit from my friends that are OSU fans because they were scared of losing.  Now it's almost like they feel sorry for me, and it's 10 times worse.  They expect to win now.

We read books, not burn them.

We shower.

But actually I always respected tOSU, intertwined with a rival-fuelled hatred. Woody punched the Clemson player, but also taught history and looked out for his players & staff, like Bo did. Bo coached there and was shaped by Woody.

Until Tressel, then everything changed - they became the win-at-all-costs SEC offspring. Clarrett, Smith, Pryor, Tressell - and gotta throw Gene Smith in there too. Smarmy, volatile, supremely irrational fanbase with a persecution complex despite being petted by NCAA / ESPN. Horrific and disgusting.

Very interested in all of your responses. Like some of you, I hate you guys because of my dad.

It is curious to me that so many of you who "hate Ohio" are actually from Ohio- and your program depends on Ohio for recruiting (or at least it used to).

Anyway, I love the rivalry and I enjoy reading people's thoughts on the subject.

I can't bring myself to hate an entire state - too many good people there.  Plus The Pretenders, The Tragically Hip, and The Low Anthem wrote pretty good songs about the state.  And the state has supplied some of Michigan's best players.

Ohio State University fans, however, can be a bit much.  They can be a bit irrational and distasteful.

Because I live in Bowling Green area and grew up with these people, who I have come to despise. Because half the Ohio fans down here don't even watch the games and still think Maurice Clarrett is their running back, yet still have the audacity to make fun of M fans when they don't know the first thing about their own team.  And because they are the most ignorant and obnoxious fans in the Midwest.

First, I was born there, as were my parents and grandparents.  My family moved to Michigan when I was 4.  My dad went to OSU law.  He was a diehard OSU fan, and so was I until I went to college -- first Ohio Wesleyan and then Michigan -- at which point I jumped the fence.  It was fun being a Michigan fan in Delaware, Ohio.  Not many Michigan people at OWU so I enjoyed being an outsider.

I transferred to Michigan because it was a way-better school and cheaper and because with my mediocre grades, getting in as a transfer in January was my only shot.  My dad told me to go the MSU.  He said Michigan would be too hard for me.

So, reason #1, is the rebel in me: I believe people born and raised in Ohio will never do something that their parents would disapprove of.  You can look it up.  They're sheep and they're dull and they know it.  Because of this, they resent outsiders who venture out of the box every now and then; especially those from Up North.

Reason #2, they're consumed by OSU football because it's all they've got.

Combine one and two and you get the most vapid, moronic mean-spirited assholes in the country.

I don't know...I think I just hate their football, hockey, and basketball teams...and I think I hate them because it is good to hate something and they seem like solid choices.

I live here. Cuyahoga Falls about 35 minutes south of Cleveland. I have always loved Michigan and have always endured a litany of "fuck michigans" among other profanities everywhere I go. Now that I have a 5 and 3yr old daughter it really gets old.

On the whole Michigan fans are classy and respectful. I have NEVER been able to say that about people I share taxes with.

And I don't really hate the school, at least not all that much. I just hate their athletic teams and their fans who happen to be assholes.

I hate to make the state of Ohio synonymous with Ohio State University. That's what THEY want.

Anyway...

I live in Ohio, and I DO hate living here sometimes when the going is good for OSU and bad for UM -- like it has been for a while now.

1) Just because they are Ohio and I was raised to hate them

2)  More personal reason. Went to Cedar Point about 5 years ago with the girlfriend. Had a great time but as were walking out to my car to leave I notice a huge key scratch on both sides of my car. ( from the front tire to the back )  and a small note on my window saying " Go home. Fuck Michigan! Go Buckeyes".  ( True story, not joking ) Ofcourse my car had a Michigan plate and a couple small Michigan football decals on it but i still couldn't believe someone would take it that far.  Ohio fans are fucking hillbillies.  Just a couple reasons why i hate them.

I don't particularly hate OSU as in the school. Its hard for me to, considering I'm doing a graduate program here now. And I know plenty of good, decent people here, so I never want to make the mistake of stacking every OSU fan in the same boat.

But I despise their athletic teams in any and all forms. From Jim Tressel to Troy Smith to Evan Turner. It just seems like no matter what we do, that school seems to always have our number. I remember watching Evan Tuner sink that shot in the Big Ten tournament, and I all I could do was sink back into my couch and mutter "Shit, haven't we suffered enough?" When will the day come that we're the ones that get to plunge the dagger through their hearts?

Another reason is that it seems like no matter what happens to OSU, they always come out of any situation better than they did when they went in. They went through Tressel-gate, lost a great coach, had one 'meh' season, but got an even better coach in the process, who just luckily happened to step down from his job in the previous year, and only have ripped off a 23-game winning streak since then. Some could even argue that Tressel getting fired was the best thing that could've ever happened, in the long run. Then, of course, to top it all off, they invite Tressel back and his players carry him off the field. A cheater, celebrated and adored by the masses, which I looked at as a huge "fuck you" to the NCAA. And of course, whenever something happens to Michigan, it's only the beginning. Everything slowly but surely falls apart.

Admittedly, I am jealous of their success. With our brand name and resources being pretty comparable, I can only wonder sometimes why we haven't been able to follow suit? There's no reason we can't.

Woody Hayes, The guy is still a legend in Columbus even tho he was  a dick head who got fired for hitting a kid in an actual football game.

Their fans, they are the biggest bandwagon state i have ever seen. If the steelers are winning then they are Steeler fans, if the browns win then they are browns fans. During the Cooper years there where a lot of Michigan fans in Columbus. They always act like the buckeyes are the best team in the country, even tho they haven't beaten a top 15 team in 4-5 years.

The players. I got a million stories about run in with OSU players. From racing David Boston out side of a bar in columbus, to accidentally hitting Lawrence funderburke with a can of soup outside of a Big Bear.

I don't. Ohio is a fine place and OSU is a fine school. Most of the beliefs and attitudes held by any given sports fan, just like anyone else, can be explained via one simple concept: confirmation bias. It's the greatest force in the universe, after all.

I don't hate Ohio. How does it make sense to hate a state, defined by a rather arbitrarily-drawn boundary.

That said, I do like to win, and hate to lose. And I hate to lose most to those who wish to beat us the most.

Their legend was crazy and involved in scandal.

Their last "great" coach was a pathological cheater and instead of shunning him like almost any other program would, they celebrate him when he returns.

Their current coach is a liar who abandoned his players at Florida when he couldn't succeed with them under a health ruse and has one of the weakest winning streaks in college football.

While it would be biased of me to think that Michigan deserves to win, I do feel that some teams deserve to lose, and I hate Ohio State mostly because they are the team that least deserves to win in the country.  They are the epitome of the "win at all costs" culture of big time college football.

Grew up in ohio over in the tri-state (WVA-PA-OH) area so there was a distribution of WVA / PSU / ND and ohio fans. ohio's fans that I know are white trash, the people I know that are ohio fans I would never consider friends.

Just like I label Texas as the redneck ND, I label ohio fans assholes. I'm glad I don't live their anymore.

FYI - Pittsburgh Steeler fans equal ohio fans. No respect for any of them.
