WHY ARE THERE IOWA BANNER ADS ON MGoBLOG????

After a crazy enough week, I'm ready to reset the optimism meter and look the Hawkeyes square in the face and say 'Bring 'em on, Ferentz,' so I hop on the world's premier Michigan football blog to get down to some good ol' fashioned Wolverine bravado.

And of course, when I get here, I'm met with this hideous monstrosity. --->

Okay, seriously..... What's a brother gotta do to get this stuff off his favorite Michigan blog??? Obviously there's some kind of phishing going on that's reading the competition's name and serving up the most appropriate advertising, but this is ridiculous.  And it certainly hasn't been the first time.

I'm going to need somebody tell Mike Martin that I was forced to stare at cheesy Steeler knockoff's while trying to digest UFR, in the hopes that Captain Stanzimerica will be the one to pay for it.

This is the kind of stuff that gets politicians fired.  Don't make me place some phone calls to MGoShoe.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

What is this doing on our blog????

I have no idea what you're talking about.

It's weird, the heading was clearly closed and the paragraph was started after the break, but for some reason the blog failed to recognize it the first time around.  I literally re-opened the edit and just saved it back and then it was fine.

The way I understand it is that he gets some small amount of money every time an ad is loaded (on the order of hundredths of a penny for each ad), and some slightly larger amount for click-throughs. I have no idea what the breakdown is specifically for MGoBlog as far as which contributes more to the total revenue, but I would guess that since most people never click through, the ads loaded count is more important.

I'm in the industry, so here's the deal.  Advertisers (Lame Iowa Jersey Store - LIJS) can buy ad space in three ways:

Cost Per Thousand Impressions (CPM)
Cost Per Click (CPC)
Cost Per Action (CPA - someone clicks on the ad and buys some jerseys from LIJS)

The advertiser buys the ads through networks or exchanges like Google, Yahoo, AOL or hundreds of other entities.

They decide "I would like to behaviorally target men who love sports and also contextually target around Iowa Hawkeyes Football content".  The technology behind whatever network they're using decides in a millisecond when to serve the ad based on the cookie history of the visitor as well as the content on that page.

"Publishers" like MGoBlog are almost exclusively paid on a CPM basis.  MGoBlog uses Google AdSense, which is technically a separate Google business than the one selling the ads to LIJS.  Sneakyfuckers collect money on both ends.

Clickthrough rates on a site like this are probably in the 0.02 - 0.1% range.  Yes, I got that right.  1 in 1000 people would be a good day.

So if MGoBlog has a good clickthrough rate, these impressions would look more valuable than BobsSportsBlog, even if they had the same impression volume.  If advertisers are willing to pay more because MGoBlog drives more traffic to their site than BobsSportsBlog on a dollar-for-dollar basis, bidding and prices go up for MGoBlog.  So impressions pay the bills.  But clicks indirectly and theoretically increase the value of MGoBlog's space.

because there are Iowa fans who read this site, especially this week. They're here to read the content, not the ads, but while they're here, Brian might as well make some money off of them.

If you have searched anything for Iowa on your computer then that is probably why.  I searched for some airline tickets on mobissimo.com and now the ads are always mobissimo.  Before I went on a cruise this past spring I was always looking stuff up about the cruise ship and so the ads were always that cruiseline.

...they get put on your computer like all the other cookies, but these ones monitor browsing habits. Go into the cookies folder and delete them, and change your settngs so that they are deleted everytime you close the browser
