I think skipper will be the next commit hopefully ..all 6'10" of him

Mike Farrell had an article on rivals (link - paywalled), basically saying how much better he feels about Derrick Green to Michigan after speaking with him in NY and the Dawson recommitment.

The tweets are from wolverinenation, sounds like the weekend was a success overall.  I remember reading on Tremendous that our current offensive line class was told we would only take 5 guys, and one of them (no one was named) even said he'd be upset if we took a 6th guy.  These next few weeks should be interesting to see how everything plays out.

I heard somewhere that it was Chris Fox, but i'm not 100% sure on it. Someone on the Scout message boards mentioned that Fox had said in the past he'd be upset if we took a 6th OL. Take that for what it's worth.

the reason they'd need a 6th linemen would probably be because of the departure of Lewan, yes?

Since Bosch and LTT are coming in early, perhaps they can prepare in the next 9 months and be able to contribute as special teamers / 2nd string linemen. Maybe that's the thinking.

Fox wasn't the only one, but it does sound like the overall tone may be changing and that the current commits may be OK going with more. One commitment told me yesterday that we may even take 7 OL now.

Lewan would have only been here for another year, so I don't know if he really is the reason because all of the incoming lineman will likely redshirt, which means there would be no effective overlap between lewan and the 2013 OL recruits. I think 5 is fine and that the numbers should be built over a couple years and not by taking 6 this year. Personally, I'd rather take a player at another position.

However, I think Deveon Smith is vastly underrated. If you look at his senior highlights he is very impressive. His film is arguably more impressive than Green's. I'm sure caveats about competition apply but Smith appears to have a high ceiling, especially behind those offensive line recruits you mentioned. Green is important but Smith will be very productive as well. I'm not so sure I would peg him as more important than others.

That being said, it's great to be in a position with recruits like this where we can debate about which 5 star is more important rather than hoping for any 5 star at all. It's a no lose situation as far as I'm concerned. I would like all 3 (Green, McQuay, & Treadwell) obviously, but if we don't get any of them this class is still has a great mix of talent that will accomplish big things. Go Blue.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this turn out like Mike Hart Max Martin a few years ago. Just like Green, Martin was more highly touted. When they showed up on campus Hart took over. Irregardless there's no such thing as too much talent

Green missing us means the coaches failed. If we lose him while picking up his good friend in Dawson and the fact he's openly said we lead currently...I cannot fathom how we don't get him.

I know I sometimes getting into the trap of blaming the coaches for 'missing' on recruits as much as anyone else, but in this case, I think the coaches have done just about everything they can. As long as they keep this up, I would assume a change on Green's leaderboard would be something outside of Michigan's control.

I sorta would argue the opposite. No matter how good your quarterback is, you have to have WRs that can get separation. Sure, good quarterbacks can make above average receivers look great, but can they make mediocre WRs look above average?

On the flip side, I don't think it's really going to matter who's running behind that line. The holes. They will be gaping.

I disagree with this.  Any college WR can get open, it's just a matter of how open, and open for how long.  A good quarterback can see open receivers early and deliver an accurate ball with zip, before the defender can close the window.  Also, if the QB can throw a well placed ball, the WR doesn't even need to be open most of the time, especially when that WR is 6'2"+ like most of ours.

The third thing you're missing (in your first paragraph, anyway) is the OL.  A great passing game has a good QB, good WRs, and time (good protection).  If you have a good QB who has time to throw, a lot less is needed from the receiving corps.  It's near impossible for even the best DBs to cover a receiver for more than about 4 seconds.
