How many more commits can we get?!
I heard somewhere that it was Chris Fox, but i'm not 100% sure on it. Someone on the Scout message boards mentioned that Fox had said in the past he'd be upset if we took a 6th OL. Take that for what it's worth.
I've heard it was Fox, too. However, he was on the visit yesterday and was reportedly encouraging Skipper to join the class, so maybe he has changed his mind.
I hope so! That'd be awesome. I'm really wondering who is part of the rest of the attrition though...
I can't believe that they'd trade Fox for Skipper, so to speak.
the reason they'd need a 6th linemen would probably be because of the departure of Lewan, yes?
Since Bosch and LTT are coming in early, perhaps they can prepare in the next 9 months and be able to contribute as special teamers / 2nd string linemen. Maybe that's the thinking.
Fox wasn't the only one, but it does sound like the overall tone may be changing and that the current commits may be OK going with more. One commitment told me yesterday that we may even take 7 OL now.
Considering his high profile (and, really, common sense) that seems odd. What difference would one more guy make in the big picture (Tunsil, maybe, aside)?
The only reason someone was pissed because they thought that the LS was going to take up one of the OL spots.
Maybe now that it seems more than likely that Lewan moves on, they've all accepted the fact that Hoke wants one more.
Lewan would have only been here for another year, so I don't know if he really is the reason because all of the incoming lineman will likely redshirt, which means there would be no effective overlap between lewan and the 2013 OL recruits. I think 5 is fine and that the numbers should be built over a couple years and not by taking 6 this year. Personally, I'd rather take a player at another position.
I look forward to the day when we whiff on Green, Treadwell, or McQuay so in the future the overplayed recruit joke can transition to one of them from Stefon DIggs
If we whiff on Green I will be a sad panda. Just my opinion but I think Green is more important to get than the other 2. With the oline class we are getting combined with our freshman and Morris and how well Gardner is doing....I think our offense will be primed to make even average wide receivers look very good.
I'm not suggesting I want us to or we will whiff on any of those. I just want the Stefon Diggs jokes to stop
I understood what you meant. I was just expressing my really wanting to land green.
I'll write a 500 page book of Stefon Diggs jokes if we get those three. And then I'll sell it to you.
We'll buy the book.
if you can get Kelly Baraka and Cullen Christian to autograph it.
Why did Stefon choose not to go to Michigan?
He decided he no longer diggs the school.
How do we get Diggs to take another visit to Ann Arbor?
Get Maryland to join the Big 10.
partially underground? Stefon Diggs.
However, I think Deveon Smith is vastly underrated. If you look at his senior highlights he is very impressive. His film is arguably more impressive than Green's. I'm sure caveats about competition apply but Smith appears to have a high ceiling, especially behind those offensive line recruits you mentioned. Green is important but Smith will be very productive as well. I'm not so sure I would peg him as more important than others.
That being said, it's great to be in a position with recruits like this where we can debate about which 5 star is more important rather than hoping for any 5 star at all. It's a no lose situation as far as I'm concerned. I would like all 3 (Green, McQuay, & Treadwell) obviously, but if we don't get any of them this class is still has a great mix of talent that will accomplish big things. Go Blue.
Yes I agree this class is very special whether or not we land any of the mentioned three.
Green's level of comp is twice as good as what Smith sees.
Don't forget that Green mostly only plays half of the game due to blowout wins.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this turn out like Mike Hart Max Martin a few years ago. Just like Green, Martin was more highly touted. When they showed up on campus Hart took over. Irregardless there's no such thing as too much talent
Green missing us means the coaches failed. If we lose him while picking up his good friend in Dawson and the fact he's openly said we lead currently...I cannot fathom how we don't get him.
..He's a 17/18 year old who sometimes changes his opinion without good reason. I know I sometimes getting into the trap of blaming the coaches for 'missing' on recruits as much as anyone else, but in this case, I think the coaches have done just about everything they can. As long as they keep this up, I would assume a change on Green's leaderboard would be something outside of Michigan's control.
I sorta would argue the opposite. No matter how good your quarterback is, you have to have WRs that can get separation. Sure, good quarterbacks can make above average receivers look great, but can they make mediocre WRs look above average?
On the flip side, I don't think it's really going to matter who's running behind that line. The holes. They will be gaping.
I disagree with this. Any college WR can get open, it's just a matter of how open, and open for how long. A good quarterback can see open receivers early and deliver an accurate ball with zip, before the defender can close the window. Also, if the QB can throw a well placed ball, the WR doesn't even need to be open most of the time, especially when that WR is 6'2"+ like most of ours.
The third thing you're missing (in your first paragraph, anyway) is the OL. A great passing game has a good QB, good WRs, and time (good protection). If you have a good QB who has time to throw, a lot less is needed from the receiving corps. It's near impossible for even the best DBs to cover a receiver for more than about 4 seconds.
Andrew Maxwell is nodding.
Be careful what you wish for. Please.
since Treadwell eliminated us, I propose that all lame recruit jokes be changed from Stefon Diggs to Laquon Treadwell for the next year
However I feel like 6 would be a bit overkill...
HOPING FOR: Green and Treadwell
THINK WE'LL END UP WITH: Green
Our oline class is the cake. Our defensive players in this class is cream filling. Morris is the icing. Green would be the cherry on top. Treadwell would be like some fancy 1000 dollar paired champagne you almost never get.
Very odd way of putting it, Mr. Dahmer.
I am confused by your Mr. Dahmer reference. Enlighten me good sir.
And this is exactly why I love Mgoblog.
Because we don't know our cannibals from our ... non-cannibal criminals?
Edit: Sorry. I see Jeffrey dabbled in some cannibalism in addition to his other interests.
how did you not know that?
ask me if Mrs. Lampjaw was not working for the Cook County State's Attorney at the time.
Like needlepoint and stamp collecting and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD IF YOU EAT PEOPLE THAT IS YOUR "THING."
No one is ever described as being a "Mailman, and also cannibal"
I never accused him of being a mailman.
to Lorena Bobbit?
"Are you gonna eat that?"
Bring em on!
Don't leave McQuay out of the party!
There is a zero percent chace Treadwell comes to UofM .
Recruting is weird, but not that weird. SOme folks should take off their Maize goggles for a change.
