How many more commits can we get?!
I heard somewhere that it was Chris Fox, but i'm not 100% sure on it. Someone on the Scout message boards mentioned that Fox had said in the past he'd be upset if we took a 6th OL. Take that for what it's worth.
I've heard it was Fox, too. However, he was on the visit yesterday and was reportedly encouraging Skipper to join the class, so maybe he has changed his mind.
I hope so! That'd be awesome. I'm really wondering who is part of the rest of the attrition though...
I can't believe that they'd trade Fox for Skipper, so to speak.
the reason they'd need a 6th linemen would probably be because of the departure of Lewan, yes?
Since Bosch and LTT are coming in early, perhaps they can prepare in the next 9 months and be able to contribute as special teamers / 2nd string linemen. Maybe that's the thinking.
Fox wasn't the only one, but it does sound like the overall tone may be changing and that the current commits may be OK going with more. One commitment told me yesterday that we may even take 7 OL now.
Considering his high profile (and, really, common sense) that seems odd. What difference would one more guy make in the big picture (Tunsil, maybe, aside)?
The only reason someone was pissed because they thought that the LS was going to take up one of the OL spots.
Maybe now that it seems more than likely that Lewan moves on, they've all accepted the fact that Hoke wants one more.
Lewan would have only been here for another year, so I don't know if he really is the reason because all of the incoming lineman will likely redshirt, which means there would be no effective overlap between lewan and the 2013 OL recruits. I think 5 is fine and that the numbers should be built over a couple years and not by taking 6 this year. Personally, I'd rather take a player at another position.
I look forward to the day when we whiff on Green, Treadwell, or McQuay so in the future the overplayed recruit joke can transition to one of them from Stefon DIggs
If we whiff on Green I will be a sad panda. Just my opinion but I think Green is more important to get than the other 2. With the oline class we are getting combined with our freshman and Morris and how well Gardner is doing....I think our offense will be primed to make even average wide receivers look very good.
I'm not suggesting I want us to or we will whiff on any of those. I just want the Stefon Diggs jokes to stop
I understood what you meant. I was just expressing my really wanting to land green.
I'll write a 500 page book of Stefon Diggs jokes if we get those three. And then I'll sell it to you.
We'll buy the book.
if you can get Kelly Baraka and Cullen Christian to autograph it.
Why did Stefon choose not to go to Michigan?
He decided he no longer diggs the school.
How do we get Diggs to take another visit to Ann Arbor?
Get Maryland to join the Big 10.
partially underground? Stefon Diggs.
However, I think Deveon Smith is vastly underrated. If you look at his senior highlights he is very impressive. His film is arguably more impressive than Green's. I'm sure caveats about competition apply but Smith appears to have a high ceiling, especially behind those offensive line recruits you mentioned. Green is important but Smith will be very productive as well. I'm not so sure I would peg him as more important than others.
That being said, it's great to be in a position with recruits like this where we can debate about which 5 star is more important rather than hoping for any 5 star at all. It's a no lose situation as far as I'm concerned. I would like all 3 (Green, McQuay, & Treadwell) obviously, but if we don't get any of them this class is still has a great mix of talent that will accomplish big things. Go Blue.
Yes I agree this class is very special whether or not we land any of the mentioned three.
Green's level of comp is twice as good as what Smith sees.
Don't forget that Green mostly only plays half of the game due to blowout wins.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this turn out like Mike Hart Max Martin a few years ago. Just like Green, Martin was more highly touted. When they showed up on campus Hart took over. Irregardless there's no such thing as too much talent
Green missing us means the coaches failed. If we lose him while picking up his good friend in Dawson and the fact he's openly said we lead currently...I cannot fathom how we don't get him.
..He's a 17/18 year old who sometimes changes his opinion without good reason. I know I sometimes getting into the trap of blaming the coaches for 'missing' on recruits as much as anyone else, but in this case, I think the coaches have done just about everything they can. As long as they keep this up, I would assume a change on Green's leaderboard would be something outside of Michigan's control.
I sorta would argue the opposite. No matter how good your quarterback is, you have to have WRs that can get separation. Sure, good quarterbacks can make above average receivers look great, but can they make mediocre WRs look above average?
On the flip side, I don't think it's really going to matter who's running behind that line. The holes. They will be gaping.
I disagree with this. Any college WR can get open, it's just a matter of how open, and open for how long. A good quarterback can see open receivers early and deliver an accurate ball with zip, before the defender can close the window. Also, if the QB can throw a well placed ball, the WR doesn't even need to be open most of the time, especially when that WR is 6'2"+ like most of ours.
The third thing you're missing (in your first paragraph, anyway) is the OL. A great passing game has a good QB, good WRs, and time (good protection). If you have a good QB who has time to throw, a lot less is needed from the receiving corps. It's near impossible for even the best DBs to cover a receiver for more than about 4 seconds.
Andrew Maxwell is nodding.
Be careful what you wish for. Please.
since Treadwell eliminated us, I propose that all lame recruit jokes be changed from Stefon Diggs to Laquon Treadwell for the next year
However I feel like 6 would be a bit overkill...
HOPING FOR: Green and Treadwell
THINK WE'LL END UP WITH: Green
Our oline class is the cake. Our defensive players in this class is cream filling. Morris is the icing. Green would be the cherry on top. Treadwell would be like some fancy 1000 dollar paired champagne you almost never get.
Very odd way of putting it, Mr. Dahmer.
I am confused by your Mr. Dahmer reference. Enlighten me good sir.
And this is exactly why I love Mgoblog.
Because we don't know our cannibals from our ... non-cannibal criminals?
Edit: Sorry. I see Jeffrey dabbled in some cannibalism in addition to his other interests.
ask me if Mrs. Lampjaw was not working for the Cook County State's Attorney at the time.
Like needlepoint and stamp collecting and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD IF YOU EAT PEOPLE THAT IS YOUR "THING."
No one is ever described as being a "Mailman, and also cannibal"
I never accused him of being a mailman.
to Lorena Bobbit?
"Are you gonna eat that?"
Bring em on!
Don't leave McQuay out of the party!
There is a zero percent chace Treadwell comes to UofM .
Recruting is weird, but not that weird. SOme folks should take off their Maize goggles for a change.
I don't think Treadwell's coming to UM either, but the fact that recruiting IS so weird would have me believe it's not a 0% chance. Who knows how Treadwell will change next week
Na na na boo boo, stick your head in doo doo. (Not serious) (Kind of serious).
First Skipper, then Orlando Bown (all 6'10 of him too). We move LTT to center. Then, the former tackles move to TE and the guards move to FB and RB (when Hurst isn't there). Our opposition will be baffled by our team of atomic supermen(superboys, really), throw their hands up, and flee in terror and confusion.
BK-Raback-PARTYROOM-RDT it. I have exclusive sources on this (all of which are imaginary).
So it's just gonna be a 3 man line that Morris can't see over?
We already have another 6'9 on board, in D Ward. We just need our final piece of the puzzle. Morris is now our punter, due to the Hagerup issue. He won't use his foot though. He's just going to throw it 60 yards if necessary, which it won't be. (see aforementioned linemen)
Is that what they call "manball?"
"SUPER-MANBALL" ? ? ?
Green would be nice for our next pickup. Are there any other WRs we may have targeted?
I doubt Green will be next. Most signs point to him holding out til around signing day.
What signs have you seem????
Unless Skipper has gator arms, put him at SDE so he can swat passes.
Kidding, mostly ...
I want playmakers on offense as much as the next guy, but with a great QB (check) and a stable of huge, reliable WRs (check) I doubt our passing game will ever really be a weakness. Green is a higher priority than Treadwell at this point imo.
I think a lot of people are forgetting about the playmaking ability of Funchess. I my opinion he didn't get the ball enough this season.
Funchess AND our highly talented other TE Jake Butt coming this fall.
I can't wait for 2 TE sets next year.
With honey funchess of oates gaining weight and strength in the off season he will be on the field almost the whole game and I feel like Butt will be used in a similar capacity that Funchess was used this year until he acclimates to the college game. Final caveat, don't sleep on Khalid Hill, he had a real raport with Morris in the summer camps.
Watching the Pats the last few years, I'm hoping we go to that type of offense where we can change plays at the line and run some kind of hurry up to set up mismatches. One of the biggest reasons they can do that is because they have 2 TE sets where the guys can block or receive passes (or even run the ball in Hernandez's case). I'd love to see that from Funchess, Butt, Hill, and Co.
So your you're looking forward to seeing Shany shane and the Funches Butt?
don't worry it will continue that way with borges makin the calls
Which huge reliable receivers are you talking about?
Guys nobody have really seen yet. Chesson Darboh Jaron Dukes and Damario Jones.
Exactly. Which is why I was questioning the word "reliable." All unproven and Funchess is a TE and Jackson has not impressed.
Funchess is returning, Jeremy Jackson is pretty big, Darboh is 6' 2" I believe, and Cheson is large.
Jeremy Jackson, Darboh, and Chesson have the size, but I'm not sure they can be considered reliable just yet.
sounds like my problem...
i agree, and at this point, i don't see many scenarios where green doesn't go blue. he's got to look at all the studs on the o-line hoke is bringing in, and know that in about 2 years, he'll be in a situation where no on will touch him until he's already 6-7 yards downfield.
Holy overstatement, Batman!
Seriously, there's no way it takes a full 2 years.
debatable. as highly touted as our offensive line recruits are, as well as the current freshman, it will take time for them to gel, put on the necessary muscle, etc. i think the line could still have some issues next year against better d-lines, with the only reason being that it will be so young and inexperienced. but i'm with you in that i hope i'm wrong.
I posted this above, but the ability to catch the ball doesn't make a receiver reliable. He also has to be open, you know. None of the guys on this team you would tab as 'reliable' have done anything to earn that outside of Gallon or Dileo, and even those two suffer from the dropsies every now and then.
Farrell just typed out some more very positive words regarding Derrick Green and Michigan. It's all paywalled stuff at Rivals, but rest assured it was more good information. Interesting to note that Farrell mentions Dawson's recommitment being a boon for Michigan's chances with Green.
Link for those w/ Rivals:
Six-foot ten? Criminee, what are they feeding these kids?
when you think 10'6" after actually reading 6'10"
28. Dawson (I think they'll wait on McQuay, but once he goes elsewhere, we'll take Reon Dawson).
...I wonder who?
I give Michigan very little to no chance with Treadwell...but I'm saying there is a chance
He's still taking an official visit to Michigan so there's definatley a chance.
Are we recruiting him at LB? And do we really need another LB and if we do why not Levenberry?
We're recruiting him as a SAM linebacker, from what I've heard. The staff wanted Levenberry as an inside LB, and they weren't even sure these spots were going to be open until recently. Since the Levenberry ship has essentially sailed, I don't think the coaches would go back there again.
Thanks for the info, good insight
Definitely Green. I think it'll take something substantial to keep him from committing.
Would anyone else like to see a fast slot ninja in this class. I love the size but a little shake and bake never hurts.
Other than Gallon who?
I am all for speed, but why do we need to have short guys to have speed. There are fast enough tall guys. Also, while there are exceptions, taller receivers - especially when there are 2-3 out along with 1-2 tall TEs tend to present problems as most college teams do not have a secondary made up of all tall DBs.
I doubt it was a "promise." Probably more like, "we are anticipating 5 OL, but the situation is fluid."
If we don't add another stud lineman in this class, then we will in the next class. The coaches have made the trenches a point of emphasis, and the kids coming in know they are going to have to compete with the best in the country everyday.
Green is highest priority but he'll drag it out close to NSD.
Other than Green, my interest is more on Team 135. Bunch of good targets in MI and we need a few studs at WR, RB, and DT as playmakers.
A Scott, J Mixon and B Mone would be a great trio. Then land Webb, Holmes and McDowell. Yikes.
I am not trying to be THAT guy when I ask this but, what is the lastest on where we stand with McQuay? Is he still in the picture?
Nothing has been said that would exclude him from being in the picture.
Vandy, and maybe USC and FSU from what i understand..i think it seems mostly like us and Vandy.
LM3 was on his official to USC this weekend.
The rain part is true, but the cold part is pretty relative...
I would say Ball.
Nebraska commit snuck in this weekend too.
Polini told him if he went on a visit, consider himself no longer a part of the class.
And do you have a source or link?
Leon's dad posted this tweet earlier today:
"to all schools left recruiting L3 if you feel there is someone better or you will settle for a comit do what's best 4 ur team games r 4 kids "
Not sure who it is directed towards. Could be us, could be USC, as "rumor" has it they sent a bunch of coaches out to visit Max Redfield while LM3 was on his OV.
