Georgia for me, also. But I actually know why. I was born and raised in Atlanta and during my formative years was when Vince Dooley reigned supreme and Herschel Walker was winning the Heisman and Georgia was one of the top programs in the country.
My older daughter was born in Atlanta and lived there all of 20 months before we moved to Chicago, but she still identifies herself as from Georgia and wants to do gymnastics one day for the Lady Dawgs. She prefers the Braves over the Cubs/Sox, and UGA over UM :(

I've found the same to be true. I tried rooting for another school, but couldn't bring myself to actually care about the outcome of the games because I only have enough room in my heart for Michigan.

I really like their basketball team, and their head coach, Mark Few, is a class act. Tough to follow them prior to the Tournament, however.

I like to follow a school from each major conference and cheer for them to give bowl games a little more meaningful as well as just to make random games more interesting for me.
ACC- Clemson
SEC- Georgia
Big12- TCU
Pac12- Arizona

I don't really have a second favorite team in college athletics. I didn't even go to Michigan, but I could care less about what other teams do. However, I will occassionally root for Ball State since I went there. If this were to include pro sports than I would say Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, Pistons in that order.

just started liking them as a youth...I don't remember exactly why.
I have a team that I pull for in pretty much every conference. It makes NCAA sports more fun for me.

If you're going to enjoy the benefits of being a Duke basketball fan, I think you have to pay the costs of being a Duke football fan (at least until a couple of years ago).

Div II: Slippery Rock, of course.
For non Div II/III schools, still California division, The Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara.
Non CA schools, basketball: Butler.
Non CA schools, football: Nevada. Fun team to watch (and we see them out here in CA).

the law school was at the top of the moutain, with the undergrad campus below and the pacific ocean and catalina island beyond that. as a kid from the midwest that was a definite deal-closer. the student body on the whole was very entertaining, to say the least. i was unmarried at the time...

That was a bit of a shocker for me the first time I visited, for a professional credentialing seminar held at their business school's exec ed facility.
It was weird seeing a group of 30-50 year olds smuggling booze into the building.

Northwestern is also my second favorite D-I team. I've spent a lot of time on their lovely campus over the years, first attending & later working at CTD (aka nerd camp :) ) in the summers back in HS & undergrad. I really like Pat Fitzgerald & their uncompromising academic standards, and we usually get the W against them, so they're not too much of a threat.
Going to ND for my MA certainly didn't make me a fan (in fact I hate them even more now, since half my friends are from there, so I *really* need those bragging rights!). Now that I'm at Catholic University in DC, though, I'm really loving being a D-III sports fan. I go to most of the home football & b-ball games, where the crowds are smaller than they were at my HS. Football is pretty mediocre, although we did finally have a winning season this year. Our b-ball team is actually pretty good for the D-III level, though. We won the National Title in 2001 & always are in the running for our conference. Last year we won the conference championship on our home floor on a last-second shot and all rushed the floor. I love rooting for a D-III school, because it's a lot of fun when we win, but it doesn't ruin my afternoon if we lose. The stakes are lower, so it's much easier to shrug off.

I love the badgers!
I had a great trip there for our victory in 01, and then another great trip a few years after that... plus they win their rose bowls...
and I don't even mind their basketball team.

I can't root for any other D1/FBS school. Besides UM, I'm an alum of an ACC and another B1G school. I just can't muster any feelings for these schools. I don't donate to their alumni associatons. It's just UM for me.
Now, on the D2 level, I root for the Michigan Tech Huskies whenever possible (excepting D1 hockey matchups with Michigan, of course).

It's a four-way tie between Ohio State, Michigan State, Notre Dame & Penn State. Each of them represents something wonderful and unique and I have a deep, geninue respect and admiration for their players and fan base. In many, many ways - these four schools represent all that's "right" with the world of athletics and something Michigan can only hope to become someday.
Sorry this is silly question. You simply CANNOT have a "second favorite school team" anymore than you can have a seond favorite best friend forever or a second favorite first time you got laid.

Look at the vast majority of responses. Most are in the "i like the flying hedgehogs from Rhode Island State Teachers College" category which means they really arent somebody's "2nd favorite school".
I agree with the grad school angle though. And candidly I was just goofing around cause I was bored. Can we all agree that you cant have a THIRD favorite school then?
We have to draw the line somewhere.

Your question is a bit vague, with no limitations. So I'm taking this in several different directions.
- Any team my son or daughter (in 7th grade) are playing on. I go to more of their games (and gladly) than Michigan games. Between football, wrestling, baseball, basketball, soccer, and swimming, there have been plenty of competitions to attend. It will end all too soon.
- Local high school football. Glenbard North has done pretty well the last 10 years, and it is fun to go to the games of a good high school program.
- Any team playing MSU, Ohio, and ND during the regular season. Unless they're playing each other, in which case I favor the lower ranked team (example: I wanted MSU to beat Ohio in the Big 10 Championship game.)
- Any Big 10 team playing the SEC in football. As much as I hate Ohio and MSU, I'd still rather see them beat Auburn or Alabama or Georgia or Florida or LSU.
- (Almost) any Big 10 team playing a bowl game or in the NCAA tourney. So, in the spirit of your question, I root first for Michigan, second for any other Big10 team in the tourney. I generally would prefer to be the one to crush them (think UofM vs. Illinois in the 1989 championship year.) I also rooted for MSU over Stanford. However, because they were so full of themselves, I rooted against Ohio and for Clemson this year. The tears of pain with two losses after 24 wins were incredibly tasty and delicious.
- (Almost) any Chicago professional team. So my second favorite team would be whichever Chicago team is playing that day. However, I can't ever root for the Cubs. Insufferable fans, akin to ND fans (returning to glory . . . albeit after 100 years.)
- If the question has to do with quirky mascots, I like the Dominican University Rosary Beads, the University of California Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, and the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats.
However, when it is all said and done, I will always be a Michigan fan, first and foremost.
