Who is your 2nd favorite College Team?

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

I imagine this thread has been done previously, but I can't recall it recently, and it's August 1, meaning news is silm, so why not? I always find this interesting when I discuss with M alums and fans in person: who is your second favorite college football team? What team is it besides ours that you are following, even perhaps passionately?

My answer to start: USC. I understand how some fans hate them, but for me, they were the team of my childhood. I grew up in L.A. and moved to Michigan in my last year of H.S. so it wasn't until attending M that my love of SC was supplanted. My Dad took me to several SC games as a kid, and the memories are still with me. Seeing Traveller (the white horse), the "fight on" phrase, the fight song (which I think, along with ours, is the best in college football), my Dad teaching me about "student body right," the great tradition they had starting in the 60's, all of those things were just great to me at that age. So I still catch their games when I can, and despite the Caroll violations, wish them well.

And what about yours?

#2 TAMU. They should have one of the best offenses in the country.

#3 I usually have certain teams (and much more often players) that I think will have huge years. But after that year I stop paying attention. Last year it was Oregon and their RBs. This year it's Jeffrey and Lattimore for SC. Arkansas is another team I'll be interested in watching-great offense if they can get decent QB play. ASU could be a dark horse Pac10 winner.

I grew up in Ann Arbor and went to college and law school at Michigan, so I have no real connection to any other school that would give rise to "second favorite" status. I guess I like Penn State because of JoePa and the fact that they're the only big time program that has never been in trouble with the NCAA. Since I moved to the Bay Area, I've paid a little bit of attention to Cal and Stanford (especially Cal, since most of my Bay Area friends went there and it's the school most similar to Michigan in overall stature), but I can't bring myself to care whether they win or lose. So I guess if I had to choose a second favorite school, it would be Penn State (but it's a pretty distant second).

Like JoePa a ton. The mkst respect i could have for a coach. Their uniforms are classic and i like their logo. Only other team up there is Northwestern. Always give 110% and probably win more than they should. Just a classic underdog.

With degrees from both schools I tell most people that Illinois is a basketball school with a football problem and Michigan is a football school with a basketball problem.

Subject to change of course.

I'll be a student in a few weeks. Not a bad football school, as far as FCS goes. Excited to see some football, but I'll be watching the OSU game for sure this year.

I've been following UM football since 1975 and got two degrees from UM. But in my youth I did have an MSU phase when Magic Johnson and Kirk Gibson were there plus my oldest brother went to MSU. Admittedly, I'll root for Michigan State whenever they're not playing Michigan. Not so for Ohio State or Notre Dame.

But a hard question. I used to like Penn State and Nebraska, because they were brothers in arms in doing things the right way. Then the 90's happened...and PSU joined the B10 and got really whiney (but still do things the right way), and Nebraska sold their soul to stop losing in bowl games. Then '97, Alamo, joining the conference.... I mean, Hawaii? Who can't root for Island Girls and Rainbow Warriors? 8 months ago this would have been easy, I'd have said San Diego St. Not so much anymore. Maybe Temple and Louisville...but not that much. Temple can have a glorious offense and lose... Slippery Rock, sure...but do I ever really root? Texas would have everything you need...good academics, great football, cool uniforms, nice fans...if it wasn't in Texas. (No offense to a nice state...it's just their football entitlement is a bit much). All I know is I root for UCLA's cheerleaders. Way underrated.
