Who is your 2nd favorite College Team?

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

I imagine this thread has been done previously, but I can't recall it recently, and it's August 1, meaning news is silm, so why not? I always find this interesting when I discuss with M alums and fans in person: who is your second favorite college football team? What team is it besides ours that you are following, even perhaps passionately?

My answer to start: USC. I understand how some fans hate them, but for me, they were the team of my childhood. I grew up in L.A. and moved to Michigan in my last year of H.S. so it wasn't until attending M that my love of SC was supplanted. My Dad took me to several SC games as a kid, and the memories are still with me. Seeing Traveller (the white horse), the "fight on" phrase, the fight song (which I think, along with ours, is the best in college football), my Dad teaching me about "student body right," the great tradition they had starting in the 60's, all of those things were just great to me at that age. So I still catch their games when I can, and despite the Caroll violations, wish them well.

And what about yours?

Went to Michigan for grad and undergrad, but then got my MBA at Xavier. It's always fun to root for the Musketeer basketball team in the A10 (also helps that they generally make the dance every season).

FBS:  Georgia.  FCS:  Delaware.

Favorite Directional School:  Eastern.

Honorable Mention:  Ohio Wesleyan University.  Their mascot has been the "Battling Bishops" since the days of Fielding Yost, and I went there for summer camps and stuff when I was a kid.

I go to both UNC and NC State games since I live in RTP.  GF is a grad from UNC and getting her Phd. at NC State.  My MS is from Temple so, yes I like the Owls, which is pretty much like rooting for the Lions (3 bowl games in their storied history).

Because I am from Michigan and have friends that went to every state school I will pull for pretty much every other in-state team. Formerly, I wanted State to be competitive but can't stand the program with Dantonio at the helm.  I will also root for B1G teams wherever they play, especially bowl games.  This B1G rooting is more prevalent now because of the disrespect we get in the South.

Edit:  Armed forces teams always get my appreciation as well.

'the Chippewas of CMU! I was fortunate to go to school there during the "glory days" with Dan LeFevor and several solid NFL players... I went to a lot of fun games (the bowl games, MSU, Central-Western, BC, Ball St, etc) and went to even more really fun tailgates...

Fire Up Chips!!!

My 3rd favorite is probably Northwestern because they are a B1G team and they just have so much against them to actually be an elite team in college or even the B1G (top teir academics, small school, small fanbase, mediocre recruits, purple jerseys, etc)--But, they have a great character coach and smart, hard-working players that give it their all each game.

I have been to the following campuses: Stanford, Cal, San Fran U, App St, Duke, NC, Kentucky, BC, Mi St, CMU, WMU, EMU, SVSU, OU, LSSU, MI Tech, Grand Valley, ND, NWU, UofChicago, Marquette, San Jose St, Wake Forrest, Illinois, SLU, Washington U (STL), Tenn, Baylor, Memphis, University of Warsaw, Oxford, University of Tokyo.

I would have to say the best looking campus is Stanford.  The most vocal campus is Cal (think Hash Bash 24/7/365).  Coolist campus bar is App St.  Best looking women is a tie: University of Warsaw and Duke.

2nd Favorite team:  Slippery Rock

I lived there in the 90s when they couldn't lose, couple that with the fact I was 10 years old and you can only imagine how much of a Husker fan I was back then.

I later moved to Michigan and eventually attended UofM. It is remarkable the bond you can get for the school you attend. These days nothing compares to Michigan, but it has been interesting seeing Nebraska join the Big Ten.

I had no trouble cheering for Michigan last time they played. And while I wish them the best, I don't ever want them in the way of our championships...

Boise because I love the Smurf Turf and how a school with zero "tradition" has quickly established itself as a national force through great coaching and execution.  And Navy, because I was an Naval Officer and love everything that the Middies (and the Black Knights and Falcons) stand for as students, players, and future leaders.

Utah for me too. I have a degree from there, so Michigan and Utah are my 1a and 1b teams. It was realy tough for me when Michigan played Utah in the season opener during Rich Rod's first season. At the time, I was rooting for Michigan. In retrospect, I'm glad Utah won that one because it was the beginning of a special season that ended with a dominating performance against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl to cap an undefeated season.

so I pull for Navy as my #2 team.

Was able to play some pickup games while on station and us Marines were always able to put asside our differences with the saliors on station for  our own Navy vs. Army games.  If it meant kicking their asses up and down the field, it was all worth it.

Undefeated since 1973 (school couldn't keep funding it, so now it's a club sport)

Kidding aside, ever since my uncle began law school at Florida I occasionally root for the Gators.

My alma matter is Colorado so I gotta go with the Buffs, one of the best football games I ever watched was when we were down 3 tds in the late 3rd against #3 Oklahoma and came back to win. Only time I got to rush the field as a college student.

<----- are 1A and 1B in whatever order floats your boat, so I guess second favorite is Navy, Texas, or Purdue, the latter two being family schools (along with GVSU), and Navy because I was in it.

If my grad school (UDM) ever puts a team on the field, then I guess the above get leapfrogged.

MICHIGAN first and foremost!!

Born on campus and went there.

Clemson....i went to a tech school in Greenville, S.C. and spent my teenage years there and then went to Clemson.

It's either wear a Clemson paw shirt or wear a hat that says, "Cocks" and i am not kidding. :/ So, growing up in S.C., was not hard to pick a school for me.

South Florida because i went there too.

I attended the Air Force Academy so I have to say they are my #2.  I am looking forward to the game next year.  I think it will be way closer than people think.  Never underestimate a bunch of smart, disciplined, overachieving Cadets.

I would have loved to have gone to college at Michigan but they don't have an aviation program.  My father and sister are both U of M grads and my dad had taken me to all the home games since I can ever remember.  It's in the blood and will always be my #1.

I moved out to Oregon from Michigan about 4 years ago. My wife is an Oregon alumn, although her favorite team is now Michigan. We have season tickets to the Ducks and take our motor home down for the games. The atmosphere at Autzen is fantastic. And the added bonus is the extremely hot, and slightly dirty cheerleaders.

This thread pulled at my hart strings, I sometimes forget and need to be reminded of the long list of schools that are not Michigan.
