Who will the 2016 linebackers be?

Submitted by Skunkbearcat on

After today's game, a lot of people have been commenting that our linebackers were too slow, couldn't tackle, and couldn't keep pace/do anything against the physical Ohio State defensive front. We have a bunch of senior Hoke guys that graduate. Who is going to replace them, and are they going to be any better?

Gedeon seems like a given. Furbush has been on ST most of this year, so he's got game experience. Winovich could be moved back to LB, if necessary. The staff will take necessary steps to field the best team possible.

Seems like they have to move Winovich back to LB for next year. We should be well set at TE and H back while not-so-much at LB. Plus wasn't he supposed to be one of those smaller, faster type LBs? (Made sense to keep him at TE this year - wasn't going to crack the 2-deep at the 2 LB spots with 3 seniors and Gedeon.)

A couple other LB candidates could be Shallman and Poggi.  Shallman runs a legit 4.6 forty and has great size for a linebacker....maybe a new Jake Ryan?  Does Poggi move well enough to play inside linebacker?  If so, it would be nice to have a 265lb linebacker stopping the run.  I think we have candidates but they will need plenty of reps and practice in the off season.

The other is RB. Problem is no one challenged our starters this year, so I assume no one in pipeline. Yes, I know about Gedeon. Linebackers just don't show up and impress, so it's almost inconceivable that this is better than a subpar group next ar, with the potential to be another gaping hole that everyone has 2-3 games worth of film to exploit. I can see going to two-LB sets as a thing to hide thesaurus and get better players on the field. RB also a huge hole, but there you can hope a five star is actually that, or that a freshman shows up and plays well out of the box. All that said, Hail Harbaugh. Guy gets a team with no QB (he solved this one), no RB and no LBs and kept them relevant until the second half of their last game. Kinda big holes.

At this rate I'm not sure. We don't have anyone that can go sideline to sideline. If Morgan, Bolden and Ross were our best options this year, I'm scared for what our options are next year.

I know help is on the way, but our current crop is slow, unathletic, and just poor tacklers. And until that gets fixed, guys like Elliott are going to continue doing whatever the hell they want to our defense.

Gedeon is our best linebacker today. I'm not sure why he doesn't play. Maybe he's not as consistent, but his best is far better than Boldens or Morgan's. So he's a lock to start next year. After that it's a guessing game

Since our RBs are slow enough to be RBs but fast enough to play LBs transform one of those guys into the LB role. Who knows it might just work out better for those guys. Between Smith, Green and Isaac those guys are pretty big and decent height, especially Ty. Looking at these guys play RBs these season was painful to say the least. Smith plays his heart out but he needs a new role, so maybe defense could use him, or move him to a FB.

will probably be McCray, Wangler as the other 2. However, I look at Isaac and maybe see him at LB if he is willing to switch their and can tackle. Maybe Furbush or even Reuben Jones can fill in at LB. It will be interesting to see next spring. In my opinon I would like to see us recruit larger safties and bulk them up to LB because we are lacking the speed at LB to get cut off angles on elite RBs and dual threat QBs.

I wonder how/why Joe Bolden was named a 2015 team captain as it seemed like he was the worst starter on defense almost every week.

I'm not sure if he was selected by the players or coaches or if both were involved in the process.

Maybe the selection was based on "leadership" or how hard/well someone practiced, things the ordinary fans don't see.  Personally, I felt that driving a stake in the ground at MSU last year was pretty childish, especially given the way M played and the resulting score.

Interesting too, that Bolden was the QB of M's defense, calling out and/or adjusting their plays depending on the offensive alignment.

Pretty sure that selection process needs to be on the list of subjects that need to be addressed in 2016.
