Boubacar Cissoko had a very promising Freshman year and then things fell apart. You can't give a Legend number to a guy who has only played in two games.
Who should wear Ron Kramer's #87 Saturday?
The 1 jersey was given to incoming freshman for something like two decades straight. I'd love to see these go to freshman routinely, and upperclassmen if they ask for it (Braylon).
If Desmond was given the 1 jersey after it was clear how good he was, we wouldn't have a 21 patch to hand out today.
Give it to Funchess. And in the future, give all these numbers to freshman. Use it as a recruiting tool. I believe that is how the number 1 jersey thing started. Bo wanted an extra edge to pull Carter from Florida. I think if you look before Carter, the #1 jersey was just a jersey assigned to whoever.
"Here, Freshman WR. Here's the #21 legends jersey. Wear it proudly!"
"Oh, what's that originally unheralded but now star Senior WR? No, I'm sorry. You deserve it, but we gave it away to a five star."
Or, alternatively, Scenario 2:
"Here, Freshman WR! Here's the #21 Legends jersey! We know you'll represent for us and for our history!"
...one year later...
"Oh, sorry guy. Yeah... a senior has asked for this, and you know, he's really earned it, so... no no, it's not that you didn't. You're great and all, but uh... we're gonna just have to take this now."
At the end of the day, it's just a jersey number. It's not that important in the big scheme of things.
If you don't have a Legends number, that means you're not playing in anyone's shadow. You can create your own legacy.
To be fair, it's also a special locker.
Obviously if it's been issued, someone else can't just come and snatch it. If we get Treadwell and he's given the 1 jersey, I don't expect Hoke to just hand it to Gardner after he's played a season with it. If Hoke doesn't give Treadwell the 1, Gardner can ask for it because nobody is wearing it.
If we're giving it away as a recruting tool, then a senior who wasn't heavily recruited, but came in and played his guts out and became a star later in his career can't earn it? You said upper classmen can ask for it, but if we're using it as a recruiting tool, it's never going to be available to ask for.
The point of the jerseys shouldn't be to reward a player, they should be to motivate. I would prefer to give it to a freshman who might be a leader on the team someday (even if he doesn't become a star) than give it to a player who is a star on the field but maybe hasn't taken as much of a leadership role in the locker room.
The 1 was vacant for Braylon, and it had been used as a recruiting tool since Carter.
Tyrone Butterfield never would've come to Michigan without the possibility of wearing #1.
Go easy on Buterfield. If he doesn't drop the prior pass and allow the clock to stop, Mercury never gets to catch the game winner against Virgina.
it will improve your poetic meter...
Yards come in bunches
For our man Devin Funchess
Four score and seven.
my #10 jersey (Tom Brady era) will be meaningless.
Hard to measure his value...what unit applies?
We can honor Gallon and his number in the future by assigning one player each season to where a 10-gallon hat whenever they're on the sidelines.
But if we are honoring Gallon, shouldn't they be wearing a cloaking device when close to the sidelines?
It would be a great motivator and he obviously has the talent to wear it well for four years.
Being a senior. They can't have a reissuing of legends jerseys every year.
Hemingway got the first legends jersey. Roundtree got it next. Both seniors. I expect there will only be a ceremony the first time around
Funchess should get it. Using the methodology that the #1 had prior to being hijacked by Braylon, Funchess is the perfect fit. Dynamic player at the position the "Legend" played.
Yeah, I was going to come in here suggesting Devin. Looks like you guys covered that for me, but it just has to be Funchess, it's the perfect fit for him.
I sure do hope its Funchess, but I'm not quite sure how much he loves his current #19 jersey. To me it has to be a TE and who better than the Funchise.
I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum but I really do not like this whole legends jersey thing. It creates unnecessary expectations on the players who receive the honor. Plus, it really limits the ability for a great player to make their own number historical. When I see 16, I'm going to think Denard, I don't want him to get some other dude's number cuz he's done a nice job. That other guy was good, but he wasn't Denard.
You never know who's going to be great next. The whole things has this silly, cheap feeling to it. I hope it goes away just as quickly as these stupid alternate jerseys go away.
The #1 jersey does?
the number one jersey doesn't have a tacky patch on it. How would we feel if Desmond Howard and Chuck Woodson were not establishing their own legacy numbers but living up to someone else's? I for one think most jersey numbers at Michigan have an amazing legacy of multiple players. We should definitely honor past players, legacy jerseys is not good option imhe.
/Dave Brandon only understands marketing
Not yet anyway.
Having to live up to Anthony Carter, and not creating his own path? I mean, why would the all time leading receiver for Michigan want to walk in Carter's shadow....oh, wait, he requested it.
If you don't want it as an upperclassman who is establishing his own legacy, then don't take it. If it's a freshman who doesn't have a choice, then you're probably giving it to a guy who you think can live up to it. (And the only guy to ever wear #1 who might have a claim to accomplishing close to what AC did is Braylon...so it won't happen that often). And if you end up being really good, you've just helped create/carry on a tradition for something special.
Or you could just retire them like before, have no one able to wear 2 or 21, not have it as a recruiting tool, start running out of numbers, and in time have everyone forget who even wore those numbers anyway. "Marketing" says to me we're doing it to make money. And I don't think we'd be selling any more than if they were still retired. Might sell more if a player is wearing them, sure, but if that's so objectionable, let's get #1 out of circulation too.
Sounds like the biggest objection is you don't like the design of the patch. Send in your improved design, maybe they take it. But it's just your opinion that they're "tacky."
Overall, it's just a number.
Clearly it's not a "big deal" since it's just a number. No arguments there. This whole blog is pretty much not a "big deal" since it's just a sport. Given that context though, I retain my opinion that this is a stupid idea. The idea of luring a recruit with a jersey is assinine. This is Michigan fergodsakes.
If you want to bring it out of retirement, go for it. If a certain players want the number then great. The way they're doing it just feels tacky and overdone. Just my opinion.
Neg this post please
I have to agree with the idea that we need to be focusing on position groups with the numbers. We already have a WR. Although you could make an argument for a FB/TE number, I don't think anyone on our roster has earned that number yet.
I like the idea of giving it to Roh. We need one for the D-Line, and Roh is the only guy on this line that deserves it.
We have 87 and 48 still to give out this fall. I don't see either being given to a WR or LB.
Looking ahead, I think #2 will be a legends jersey very soon, and that will go to a DB.
I like Ford's 48 for a RB/FB/TE. I'm a little surprised that his number wasn't saved for Ryan, since Ford actually played LB, but it's a number that works for fullbacks and TEs.
48 is a number best suited for FBs, DBs, and TEs, in that order. 87 is technically for WRs and TEs, but D-lineman can wear it as well.
I guess I'd predict that 87 goes to Roh, and 48 goes to...Fitz.
EDIT: My thinking on the Fitz choice is that we badly need a RB legends number. We need to improve the profile for that position because for Hoke-man-bear-ball to work, we need great RBs.
I know it is not a given that the #98 will be given out as a legacy jersey, but I feel like that would be an awesome number for a running back. I don't know if that creates an issue with eligible receivers or whatever, but if a kid really wants to step into the shoes of a legend then you can't do much better. Plus, he would be the only back in the nation wearing 98, which I think would appeal to some players. If 98 isn't a possible number for RBs, though, disregard.
First off...#2 has to be Countess, and #98, due to the rules...should go to Matt Wile. Harmon was an All-American kicker/punter and Wile is very good at both.
#21 is Roundtree, who knows who wears it next year...It could be Gallon, Gardner, Jackson or even Darboh.
#47 is Ryan, good fit...but could've easily gone to a number of other guys. No need to speculate, it'll be Jake's for awhile
#48 - Ford played Linebacker, but many actually know him as a center. #48 is Elliott Mealer if you ask me. As long as the rules say he can wear that number. If not, Kenny Demens or maybe Joe Bolden.
#87 I think is Craig Roh...next year, who knows. Maybe Funchess or Williams.
So what makes you think Woodson will be retired before Countess graduates?
He plays DE and Kramer played TE and DE...if not Roh, then maybe Brandon Moore?
Obviously if you were going to give it to a freshman, it would be Funchess or Strobel.
I vote for Devin Funchess. I'm biased because I know him and I have a class with him but like others have said he can live up to the number over the next four years. Also, he played basketball in HS similar to Kramer.
It seems like everyone is forgetting Tacopants...
have spoken, and the winner is.........................Roh.
Just had a thought on the Wisert Brothers' #11. Thinking ahead here folks. I don't know how to get an exception from the NCAA for numbers, but I'd love the #11 to go to a heritage player, someone who is in a line of UM family players. The Wiserts were all amazing, but what makes them especially amazing is that there were three of them. I like what this says as well - Michigan runs in the blood. It's tradition.
I would be so happy if Mealer were to get the #11 in honor of him and his family, particularly Elliot Mealer after all he has gone through. I don't think that jersey could be honored any better than that.
All the other jerseys go to players the combine elements of exceptional talent / leadership / character. I agree. But this one jersy, I propose the elements are:
