who are you rooting for? I think I'll root for Notre Dame.
This is maaaaybe premature there, ESPN. Maryland #1 FWIW.
Probably ND, not sure yet though.
Dame winning makes us look better and hopefully sends Sparty into a slide.
Will be interesting to see MSU play someone who is neither a Div 1-AA nor a team who has only had football for five years.
Who is behind door number 3?
Can't say I have a favorite, but I do appreciate it when they make the game entertaining like they did last year. For this one I'd lean ND since they are 0-2 already and can knock Sparty off their high horse, but I honestly don't care that much.
...a favorite but I would prefer to see UM have more distance in winning percentage over ND and continue to increase the gap as far as total wins. Ultimately lifting UM's history and tradition over ND where I feel it should be. I've always found their legend elevated over UM's, the school that taught them how to play, to be an abomination. However if sparty loses I'll be ok with that too.
Slippery Rock is probably on par with the two they beat already this year.
I will root for this slippery rock you speak of if it is an icy meteor.
Meteor all the way. Failing that, >40 points for both teams.
Do we have to root for one or the other? Can't we just watch without any concerns, knowing that the fanbase of the losing team is guaranteed to melt down in spectacular fashion?
and I'd like to rub it in that their supposed BCS Championship season consists of their team starting out 0-3. MSU fans just annoy me and make me laugh with their stupidity. ND fans, on the other hand, piss me off and make me want to strangle someone.
You might want to look into some therapy dude.
MSU I would love to see Notre Dame 0-3.
to see ND at 0-3 requires one to see MSU at 3-0.
If MSU is still undefeated when we play them, it'll make the victory that much sweeter when we beat them. And it'll mean a higher jump up in the polls after we beat them too. And on top of that, we get to enjoy ND's misery over going 0-3, hear Lou Holtz changing his prediction to 9-3 for ND, and we get to hear the fire Brian Kelly talk. It's a win-win!
Notre Dame is a five point favorite and Lou Holtz said they were going to "the BCS game" so I'm obviously picking them. /s
Seriously though,I root for ND every week but Michigan week (and if they were to ever play Tennessee) so I want ND to win.
I can respect Notre Dame and their fans....I can't say the same for Sparty and their inebriated hellion followers.
Notre Dame. We've already beat them, they've already been humbled. Sparty is still riding high. They need to be brought down to earth, preferably HARD.
I'm with you on this one. I'd love to see Sparty get smoked.
My real prediction is a high scoring ND victory. Something like 42-30 for ND.
"Welcome da Earff" - Will Smith (Independence Day)
We have a fairly close competition with ND for the alltime winning percentage whereas we only compete with MSU in conference. Better to have ND lose.
I don't root for either. I just know that one of them has to lose and that feels good.
Both teams can kiss my ass.
except if there was an earthquake in SB then there would be one in Michigan as well, but I get your point.
That's a tough one. If I had to compare my friends that go to those two schools, I have to say I like my Notre Dame friends better. So Notre Dame it is.
We already beat 'em and Sparty's annoying trash-talking during their once-every-other-generation run of decent seasons is wearing verrry thin.
Watching ND in misery and Lou Holtz apopleptic and Brian Kelly's head possibly exploding is just too fun. Let's keep it up for one more week and root for Sparty to lose to CMU the week after.
I also hope MSU beats the Ohio school to the south the week on week #5 so that the Ohio school to the south can gnash its teeth about its 5-game suspensions and all that might have been.
Can I just root for Brian Kelly's head to explode? I'm rooting for whatever outcome causes this to be so.
Edit: Beaten to the punch by river-z. Must be on a lot of wish lists.
The exploding head meme is just too good to let go.
Beating a 6-0 MSU team will be more impressive than having beaten a 1-2 Notre Dame team
I want MSU 6-0, cocky, and ripe for an "upset"
I hear what you're saying but the problem with that is that Sparty will still be 6-1. They won't be able to act all high and mighty around Michigan fans, but they'll still be a pretty highly ranked team if they are 6-1 after that loss. I'd rather see them lose to ND and a few additional games to boot.
Polar Bear airstrike?
I want ND to lose more than I want MSU to lose. And that PAINS because I literally hate Dantonio more than I hate Tressel or anyone related to OSU outside of David Boston...and probably Dantonio more now that I think about it because we beat the crap out of Boston.
However, I love chaos. And to see Notre Dame at 0-3, their fan base freaking out, ESPN talking about firing Brian Kelly, and just the scene that will be South Bend on fire...who can pass that up? It would be amazing, and I really need and want it to happen.
ALSO, if MSU keeps winning, I'd love for it to be MICHIGAN that knocks them off...not Notre Dame.
However, because I want this to happen...ND is going to win by like a FG and MSU won't be heartbroken and ND's season will be saved.
i'm torn on this one, but either way it's gonna be a win for us.
0-2 is a bad enough start to make me happy. I'd rather have MSU lose to an 0-2 ND team than have an 0-3 ND team & 3-0 MSU team.
I don't like either, especially Michael Floyd & Brian Kelly on the ND side, but a loss to an 0-2 Notre Dame team will do wonders with the perception of MSU as a "contender." My whole family, other than me obviously, are MSU fans, and have heard way too much from them the last few years.
Go Irish. Crush the Spartans.
But more importantly, Go Blue. Demolish EMU.
Yeah I want MSU to win, but I'm not going to "root" for them. Partly because I like to see the Big Ten get wins, but also because I want to have Sparty be undefeated before we defeat them.
Well said. Big Ten first, especially since they're both Michigan opponents.
I like the way you two think. Our conference has taken too many hits against its overall strength, and out of conference loses like the ones Iowa, Purdue and Indiana have suffered do little to change that type of thinking of the national public opinion. I wish more people would realize a lost for any other B1G team is not a win for UM, unless of course that team is playing UM.
Separately, on thing I need to get adjusted to is preferring that OSU beats MSU because it would be better for us in the division rankings.
Double post. Sorry. Stupid internet & stupid me.
I'm torn because at first I say I want the Irish to win, just to knock MSU fans down, since we already beat ND, I don't care who ND beats from here. I hate MSU more than ND.
But then I think, I want MSU to be undefeated (if they can get through that team in Ohio) when they play us, which would be nice for us to beat them if we're both undefeated at that time. That would be fantastic. So then I lean towards MSU.
In the end, I simply cannot root for MSU, so I'd have to say ND.
I do my best to pretend I'm rooting for MSU for my family.
In reality I'm silently pulling for ND because MSU fans are far more insufferable after they win a "big" game.
This, this, a thousand times this.
You guys didn't grow up in Indiana obviously. ND is a team I'll never root for and my recent annoyance towards MSU doesn't change it. MSU all the way.
Friendly suggestion: You could always try the patented "Profitgoblue Silent Scream" when watching MSU games like the ND game. It'll feel good to do "silent screams" if/when ND suceeds or MSU fails so that you can satisfy your animal urge to root against MSU but still be respectful of your family members.
If you'd asked me this back in 2005, I would've said msu in a heartbeat. But state fans have become so obnoxious and douchey that, as much as i dislike notre dame, I just can't do it.
Congrats state fans - you've collectively been such assholes that you've driven me to root for Notre Dame. I hope you're happy.
What's wrong with everybody!
Haven't you heard enough BS from the MSU fans and our local media in the last three years that the only justice for MSU this year would be to finish with as mediocre a record as possible and an embarrassing loss to us in their stadium.
I want the our game with them this year to be similar to the butt kicking that Iowa and Alabama put on them last year.
I want their loss to Notre Dame to start their downward spiral.
I agree with you in the sense that I could care less about MSU being undefeated when we play them. I much prefer the very long tradition they had of taking that downward spiral through the season. But we heard enough BS from MSU fans long before 2008. That's moot to me. They still run their mouths the same.
I can think of only one time where I was rooting hard for one of these teams. I wanted MSU to beat ND in 2006 because ND had several cupcake opponents afterwards and I knew the media would start kissing their asses for "regrouping" after being blown out by us. Remember, if you beat a bunch of unranked teams, the world could care less. But if you beat a bunch of unranked teams and you're Notre Dame, then this is big news and front page material.
Alas, Sparty had the ultimate choke job and lost 40-37. And sure enough, Notre Dame went on to beat all those awful teams to get an undeserved invite to a BCS bowl...where they were destroyed.
It wasn't the outcome I was looking for but I did enjoy the Sparty meltdown that followed. And that's what you have to remind yourself of when you watch these teams play each other. One of them HAS to lose. And you can enjoy their tears no matter which one it is.
That game featured one of the greatest sports radio meltdowns ever:
MSU and it's not even close for me. Being from South Bend my hatred of ND is more then even my hatred for OSU. I want to see them not only lose every week but get blown out.
Isn't this like one of those "would you rather die by drowning or falling off a tall building?" questions? Or "you can only save one of your children from a fire, which one do you chose" type discussions? No right answer is possible IMO.
Basically there is no way I'm rooting for either team. Will I watch - yes. Do i give a crap who wins (or most importantly) loses - not in the least. I could easily make a case for either team's win (or loss) being beneficial to us depending on which side I wanted to argue for.
I'm torn between wanting to see MSU lose to an 0-2 team and wanting to see ND go 0-3 against the B1G this year. M, MSU and Purdue beating ND would definitely make me laugh.
Speaking as a semi-Purdue fan, there is absolutely ZERO chance that Purdue beats ND. Purdue barely beat Middle Tennessee State, and lost by Rice on a botched fg attempt. That team will not be able to move the ball against ND. It will be an embarrassment. And if Purdue does beat ND, I give mods the right to send me back to jail, without collecting $200.
Just saying it would be awesome.
ND...Sparty was pretty unbearable last year with their slightly above average team... don't want to think about what it would be like if they actually strung together some actual good years.
Sparty, easily. I root for anyone against Notre Dame.
rooted for ND in my life, and that's not going to change on Saturday. I won't exactly root for Sparty either, but rather just enjoy what should be a decent matchup. How ND is favored by five points is a complete mystery to me though.
MSU really needs to be taken down a peg, and we already beat the Irish. Spartan fans are already talking trash to both of us, and it pisses me off.
I guess simply for the good of the B1G I will root for MSU, even though it would be best if lightning canceled the game and they didn't play.
1. Because Notre Dame at 0-3 is simply too sweet and delicious.
2. MSU earns their just desserts next week by overlooking CMU in advance of the first MSU butt-kicking at OSU since Nick Saban was HC in EL.
3. Irish will be de-cleated to 1-3 by Todd Graham's spread option offense and spectactularly named Tino Sunseri the following week.
I'm rooting for ND. I always rooted for the underdog just so that team that has the most potential to make noise the rest of the season gets an early loss.
ND is a 5 point favorite
I hope they destroy sparty and I think that they do win. A win by them makes us look a little better.
But I find ND fans a bit more respectful than MSU fans (at least in Baltimore) so I would prefer to see those people happy. If ND wins, most fans out here will celebrate. If MSU wins, the one or two MSU fans I see will somehow weave in some Michigan bashing and I will be forced to drink even heavier.
I don't root for anyone besides Michigan.
I WANT notre dame to beat state.
3 relatives and nearly everyone i went to highschool with are spartans. My co worker went to ND. Pretty easy choice.
ND...Sparty was pretty unbearable last year with their slightly above average team... don't want to think about what it would be like if they actually strung together some actual good years.
Always root for the teams that we have beaten.
MSU. At least they have to go through a B1G schedule. And the thought of ND at 0-3 warms my heart after all the hype. But no matter what happens, I'm happy.
I never root for ND I dont care who they are playing, dont care what sport we are talking about. I live too close to the tarnished dome and just love hear all the lame ass excuses the domers come up with when they lose. Besides I want little brother as cocky as can be when we bitch slap them back to reality.
We beat ND, so a win makes us look better. Leads me to root for ND.
We play MSU next week - if they win, they are confident, but if they lose, they could go into a typical Sparty slide. Of course the opposite could be true - playing a team after a loss can be tough.
Recruiting - we go head to head with both of these guys, BUT: the few spots that we have left are reserved for the truly elite. The truly elite are likely not considering MSU (zing!) so I don't think that we have many remaining recruiting battles with MSU for 2012. ND is in a different boat, and another loss could have the same effect that RR's early struggles had and send Kelly firmly onto the hot seat (and we know how that impacts a team's recruiting). Leads me to root for Li'l Bro.
Hate factor - I freeking hate MSU. They really are just an annoying team with an annoying fanbase. I can actually respect ND for their past. Leads me to root ND.
Coaches - I can't stand the HC of either school. But, while Kelly is a raving asshole, he has never done anything directly to Michigan, so my hate of him is less than mini-Tress. Leads me to root ND.
On balance, I guess I am rooting for ND.
We play MSU next week?
Can't they both lose?
Don't like either one, but personally, I hope ND rolls over the Spartans.
I'm rooting for ND to turn the ball over 5 times and beat Sparty.
MSU loss + a head asplode from Kelly = fun for the whole family
You speak the truth...and that is, indeed, justice.
My second most favorite team is whoever is playing against ND. I don't care for MSU but at least they represent the B1G.
An asteroid to hit the stadium.
If I could actually hate a school in real life, it would be a tie between Sparty and Ohio. Spartyfans are too obnoxious, and get waaay too much mileage out of one or two good seasons.
Besides, the last three years of Sparty winning have been living hell as a Michigan fan. Meanwhile, ND has done what pro "wrestlers" call JTTS duty to Michigan for three years. ND has been THE ultimate foil for Denard Robinson. That alone makes it difficult for me to even dislike them anymore.
Meanwhile, what is there to not dislike about Sparty. Unberable fans, constant bragging about their few winning seasons, while simultaneously whining about their "little brother" place on the food chain. The quick transition in EL from jumpsuit orange to Sparty green still irritates me, too.
Bottom line: if I had a hemorrhoid, I would name it "Sparty."
I hate ND as much as the next guy, but I absolutely despise the Spartans. Go ND!!!!
Ever since Spartan Bob and his shenanigans (is that an Irish word?) I always root against Sparty. I might forgive them on my death bed. We'll see.
This is kind of like the dilema I had when I watched Enemy at the Gates. Yeah, the Soviets are our allies and all but did you see them setting up machine guns behind their own men?
because I hate MSU more.
hate Dantonio, hate East Lansing, hate Green, hate White, hate, hate, hate.
ND, I just feel bad for them.
I'm rooting for a tie with lots of injuries.
[i'm kidding of course. i don't root for college kids to get injured.]
He's retiring soon anyway, and I'd like to see him happy at least one Monday morning before he does so. May as well give him the one against MSU.
I hope they both hang 100 on each other. I won't root for either but I'll watch the game.
Sparty forfeits because all their players are in jail w/o enough time for dantonio to bail them out. Notre dame suits up then doesn't have anyone to play. Then we laugh as they brag about their superiority.
Got to root for the B1G and respect for the conference... ND must be punished by all B1G teams, even Purdue...
Technically, we want everyone we play to be undefeated when we beat them...
I have to root for ND. Hurts to do, but I've had waaaaay too many State fans say our game was a contest between 2 terrible teams. I'd like to shove it back down their throats.
Like your mother in law going over a cliff in your new Mercedes. Seriously, given the smack we are getting from the Sparties over our lucky win, it would be fitting for them to get hammered by ND, especially if we don't do the same to them.
Notre Dame, no contest. A win over a 1-2 "ascending" Notre Dame team gives us much more respect than a win over a 0-3 "yet another trainwreck" Notre Dame. Besides, any instance which would shut up Sparty should be heartily welcomed.
Tough question.....easy answer. 0-0 tie with both coaches going at it in a no-holds-barred death match for the win instead of overtime.
Actually, I usually root for the Big Ten in non-conference games, but I can't stand the thought of MSU going 3-0. I'll quietly pull for the Irish in this one, but will be content to know that one of them loses for certain.
Root for a giant chasm to open at the fifty yard line swallowing both teams
However, I would prefer for MSU to win. Why?
well seing as how MSU is in our division it would only make sense to root for ND. Just to give us the upperhand, however we can root for them both to have a horrible game and ND just barely win (Like how tsio barely beat Toledo!)
I'll be rooting for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame sucks. I'm rooting for MSU.... Not that MSU doesn't suck, but Notre Dame sucks far more than MSU in my opinion.
In a game between rivals, I think you root for the underdog. I disagree with Vegas and think ND is the underdog so I'll be rooting for them.
I used to root for MSU so long as they weren't playing Michigan, but after the last few years I can't do it anymore. I root against them regardless of their opponent.
I hate it when our early-season wins are over teams that, in hindsight, sucked.
B1G all the time. But then, against my better judgement, went to RCMB for some additional data points.
Well, that sucked. No respect for anything, or anyone, over there. At least Domers seem to respect football and opponents.
I think I have to root against State every week, including this one.
I think as a freshman or sophmore (06, 07) I may have rooted for MSU, but MSU fans have been so annoying and delusional the last 3 years that I will never ever cheer for them again. Ever ever ever. At least I know some people who go to ND that I can tolerate. I can't say the same for MSU
I look at it from three perspectives. First is recruiting.the second is all-time wins. The third is Lou Holtz. We seem to be winning the recruiting battle with MSU, but ND still gets 5* athletes on a regular basis. I think Hoke will be in on 5* guys on a regular basis in another year or two. Sparty will always be Sparty and will lose at the worst possible times. Plus, I want them ranked when we play them.
I also want to see us put a little distance between us and ND on all-time wins and winning percentage.
As far as Lou is concerned, I'd love to see him just stroke out with ND getting drubbed for another season.
I'm tired of Cow College being the luckiest team on the planet (taking the crown from the Luckeyes). I'd like to see them back at 6-6 or so and a loss to ND could start that. In fact I'd like to see an ass kicking.
ND. I want the Irish to go 1-11 every year with that one win against MSU.
Definitely ND. My domer friends are all quiet now, but my sparty brother in law needs to SHUT THE HELL UP.
1) Root for ND to lose in every sport in any circumstance under any conditions, by as much as possible.
2) There are no other rules.
I root for hell to freeze over first. Way better than cheering for the farmers or Touchdown grand wizard.
Gotta love MSU +5, especially teased up to +11. Take money out of the equation, and going with ND. I, too, want to see a Kelly's head explode.
It would give our win a little validation. If our best win of the first three weeks of the season is over an 0-3 team, that's not saying much.
GO ND! Lets see how Sparty handles a letdown when the Irish dont turn the thing over and score 40 on em!!!
Maybe if ND hangs 40+ points on MSU we can watch Dantonio's head assplode. Whoops, I meant explode.
No way I can pick on this one...Either result will end with a smile:)
On one side, its easier to root for Notre Dame than MSU just because Notre Dame fans are generally better in the "Class" Department. But at the same time, it would be hilarious to see Notre Dame start 0-3, especially since they have been favored in all 3 and had such high expectations this year in the form of a BCS Bowl.
You can't really go wrong here. Sure if Notre Dame wins, then it makes our win look a little more impressive, but then if/when we beat MSU, that win won't look quite as good. It's a Catch-22 when you have to play both teams and you want them both to play well for the purpose of SOS.
msu rooted for nd to beat us... So nd it is.
It would amuse me if ND played one flawless game all year and it was against Sparty.
I'll be there (notre dame college tour), but my thinking is (no matter what the result of saturday would have been) that when you must root for one rival, root for the one you have respect for. I respect notre dame with their academics and history, so notre dame it is. State, not so much.
I live in el so no doubt hope state gets beat up
not gonna root for either but i'd prefer notre dame to win. i've had my fill of msu the last 3 years. i want msu to lose to osu as well. yeah it would be great if they were undefeated when we beat them but personally i'd rather see them be at 3-2 going into that game. msu is always a weak mental team,if they come into the game 3-2 and michigan notches a couple quick scores they'll fold like a cheap afghan.
If we're speaking Australian here I'd 'root' MSU. But somewhere between the flag planting antics, the App St. taunting, the '300' references, the Valenti's of the world, the Izzo worrship by the media, and last but not least that mouthy SOB Dantonio. I've grown this strong distaste for anything Sparty. I don't like Notre Dame, but I hardly hear about Norte Dame anymore. The last 3 seasons have sort of given me a glimpse of what Notre Dame has been going through for well over a decade now. I sort of pity them. Don't you?
A win vs. Sparty makes UM look stronger.
I hope the Spartans beat them at the last second and make all those wining little ND fans cry some more.
Moreover I hope ND loses every last game they play this year. And hopefully after leading for four quarters. I'm absolutely sick of hearing for 20+ years how its their God given right to win a national championship.
They have an institutional problem at ND. Five coaches later after pushing Lou out they have zero to show for it. Nothing. Why? It's not recruiting that's for sure.
Mike Leached summed it up this week on his radio show. "they are just afraid to win".
That's what makes #16 so DAMM great. He may never be Tom Brady but the kid has balls and is NOT afraid to fail.
Sorry to digress.
Answer: Go Spartans. Bury ND.
Can't wait to hear the Fire Brian Kelly bandwagon. They do tend to pick real jackass's for coach's down in South Bend
Notre Dame. Although, that's a distant second to "stadium collapse."
