Who do you all think will be the next WR to wear the infamous #1 jersey? I think it's either Ricardo Miller or Roy Roundtree.
What do you all think?
hopefully no one
that Miller is really shooting for it. Should be interesting.
That's what made me want to ask the question, cause before I read that, I just assumed Roy Rountree was goin' to get it. His last three games, against Purdue, Wisconsin, and Ohio State; 26 rec, for 298 yds, and that was as a red-shirt freshmen. That was impressive!
Both Roundtree and Miller.
Roundtree gets it his RS Junior and RS Senior year. Then Miller takes it. Most likely, due to the pure number of WR we have this year, Miller will be RS giving him and Roundtree another year of separation. I think Miller moving here early is exactly what the #1 jersey signifies.
I don't think Ricardo is going to redshirt. By my count we have two or three (depending on what you consider Stokes) outside receivers. We're going to need more than that. You have to think those extras will come from the EE's this year. I think Miller and/or Robinson will see time this year.
I'm hoping its Stonum. Nothing against Roundtree of Miller, but Stonum could be an elite deep threat.
My guess would be on one of those two, and while I love me some Roundtree, the fact that Ricardo is aiming specifically for it makes me want to root for him more.
Better question, how much flak is RR gonna take when he gives the next WR the #1 Jersey?
Depends on who he gives it to.
As long as it is fairly obvious that the kid is deserving, there should be little to no issue with it. I suspect it won't be until a players junior year, so...if it is Roundtree it'd be 2011, and if it is Miller, it'd be 2012.
I don't really see anyone else with a great shot. Stonum is a great deep threat, but he has not looked like a NFL stud-level player.
Given how much crap he is going to get, I won't be shocked if it isn't until the senior year of X player.
The way I understand it, it's not Rich Rod's to give, it's Braylon's.
How about instead of negging me, you take the time to explain why I'm wrong here.
My understanding of the situation is that when Rich Rod came in he tried to give the #1 jersey out to J.T. Floyd and was told no because the #1 jersey was only to be given out to someone Braylon was giving the scholarship to.
I think your right jonny. Braylon has a lot of pull because of the money that he donates and the scholorship that the #1 reciever will get... Obviously it's not only his decision but he will eventually have to ok it.
I heard R.R. is gonna give it to DB J.T. Floyd. Either way, Braylons not gonna be happy about this.
Yeah, I highly doubt that happens.
Well Floyd has came closer then any other player from the R.R. era.
nobody will wear the #1 jersey under rich rod
It's probably true, at this point I doubt he would want to make a move that could somehow be construed negatively for which I cannot blame him.
As long as the WR is deserving, I don't think RR is going to take any crap for handing out the #1 jersey. At this point in time, there is no one on the team that deserves that accolade. However, that could change after this year. Hopefully, Tate makes a big step up this year - I think that's necessary for this team to really turn a corner. If Tate makes that jump (and I think there is a good chance he will - both the talent and the desire appear to be there), every receiver on the team gets better.
Demar Dorsey! O Let Do It!
want to check out about the #1:
I completely agree that the passing numbers this fall will be up from last year. First, our OL will be better, and will allow Tate more time to throw. Second, he is now a returning starter at QB, rather than a true frosh. This will make a lot of difference. Third, we return the bulk of our receiving corps - Stonum, Hemingway, Odoms, and Roundtree (we really only lose Matthews) and we add quality guys (all the new guys plus Gallon and Stokes, who were too young to really contribute last year but should this year). Lastly, we lost our top 2 (or 3?) RB's from last year, and it might take a little while before we find our guy that we can rely on. When they were healthy, and most games at least one of them was, Minor and Brown were guys we knew we could give the ball to and they would pick up yardage. We might find that guy this fall, but not right away.
Ricardo. All in.
Junior Hemmingway. I am expecting big things from him this season.
but I don't think he's going to get it this fall.
His time will come, but I'm hoping an upperclassman can step up, be a leader and earn the #1.
Maybe Hemmingway, I also like the idea of holding it out until a players senior year.
i certainly hope no freshman gets the #1 his first fall on campus!!
Roundtree in a year or two.. Miller after that.
Tate is too accurate for that.
Not sure with all of the options at the position, that one guy stands out that much from the group. From a precedent standpoint, I thought Carr set the bar pretty high by not giving it to Manningham before his junior year. Can't say I expect a freshman to get it until I've seen him play a college game.
mario was offered the number 1 before his junior year, he didn't want it. assuming ricardo develops the way the coaches expect him to, he will be the next WR to wear the number 1.
any idea why he wouldn't want to wear the #1?
not wanting to be overshadowed and wanting to make his own name/number remembered (i.e. the New Math)?
Maybe he just didn't want it. We've had plenty of great receivers not wear that number since it became associated with the position - Desmond Howard, Amani Toomer, Tai Streets, Marquise Walker, Jason Avant, to name a few.
I had not heard that. Is there any story behind his not wanting the 1?
There are tons of good candidates and I'm excited at how regardless of recruiting rankings that we've expanded our depth for the most part at positions of need. I know people are freaking out about certain players who may or may not be ready to start, but the competition will only help progress the mainstay players, and if they don't improve they won't play. And for the record, I wouldn't bet against Ricardo Miller.
i dont think roundtree will ever get it. as our qbs improve, they'll actually make use of the outside receivers and the slot guys numbers will come down
For his recruiting impact alone. Now he just needs to become the go to guy.
If taking from last few games ... Roundtree ... He stepped up bigtime. But ultimately AC is the only 1 in my cotton picking Maize and Blue heart. Braylon gets cred for making this a tradition. Kudos to him as well.
I think that Roundtree has already earned it. To the same extend as everyone else before him (except maybe Braylon) earned it before putting it on. AC and McMurtry were true freshmen, I believe. Derrick Alexander was a first year starter and David Terrell got it right out of high school. And don't even get me started on Tyrone Butterfield. Braylon is really the only guy to "earn" it.
I am not going to argue that Roundtree didnt play extremely well at the end of last season. But I remember watching games with Braylon and no matter the situation, if we needed a first down or 6 there was a mutual understanding that everyone in the stands and on the field knew who the ball was going to. And more often then not, it didnt matter that everyone knew who was getting the ball. I think that between his development, level of play and his scholarship, the receiver that eventually dons the 1 should be so transcendental that there isnt a thread opened for debate.
But as Hannibal noted above, no player besides Braylon has ever done anything to "earn" the jersey before being issued it.
I highly doubt any of the current guys we have are going to get it. I mean it's not like the #1 has been handed out like candy before. It's a rare thing for it to go out and I don't think anybody has really stood out as of yet enough to get it.
As I have already stated; Roy Roundtree, and his last three games, against Purdue, Wisconsin, and Ohio State; 26 rec, for 298 yds, and that was as a red-shirt freshmen. If he keeps this up, he is more than worthy of that honor. The #1 jersey is about production and character, which is why I think Mario never got it, though we'll see with Roundtree. I think Miller has the character, though will he have the game/stats?
It's a good debate, I think.
start but it looks like Charles is too busy giving money to Mott's. That is probably the best tradition to start.
Legitimately Dorsey could earn either number, and hopefully will endow his own number.
I thought he was wearing #2.
Correct. He and Vincent Smith are both currently wearing #2.
Well Manningham never got to wear #1 so I'm thinking a player will have to be something special now to earn it. Do any of the current guys have it in them? We'll see.
I don't think we can use Mario in the argument. Manningham could have been even better than he was but there was no way he was getting that jersey from Carr. Manningham was fantastic at Michigan but his attitude and off the field *ahem* activities kept him from any chances of receiving #1.
If Ricardo can prove on the field that he is deserving of it, he will definitely get it. Even as a freshman, he has the character to earn it. He is more mature than most upperclassmen.
I was under the impression that Manningham didn't want the #1 jersey.
It should be completely obvious when Rich Rod gives it out that player X deserves to get it.
Look how many classes came and went without the #1 receiver. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it isn't given out for several years.
If it does happen soon I'd say Roundtree. I think this is the year he shows up and breaks out.
If Ricardo produces on field, it's his.
#1 - Obviously - is about more than on field stuff.
It's about leadership, being a "Michigan Man", work ethic, attitude, etc.
Ricardo is really, really excited to be here, was a huge recruiter, and has the drive, pasion and work ethic. So if he produces on the field, I think it's his once he's a junior.
Despite the mini-controversy surrounding the jersey two years ago, I don't think we should refer to it as "infamous."
Miller hands down, he recruits his ass off! Loves UM and the tradition. Can't see why not a young talented kid, who moved his family closer to play his senior year of high school football doesnt deserve it. Thought stonum was promised it once too?
varsityblue: More praise for Stonum: "He's had and outstanding camp so far." RR hasn't put any thought into #1 jersey since Braylon flap.
Family Values at it's finest.
