I think the bigger barrier to bringing back Soup is, then what do you do with Hecklinski?  You can't move him to running backs, obviously.  O-Line has Funk.  Hecklinski has been a QB coach in the past, but I don't get the sense that Borges would be interested in letting someone else coach his QBs.  Otherwise you could put Hecklinski on Tight Ends and make Ferrigno special teams only, which might be a good way to go,

Still, it seems preferable to just hire another defensive coach.

Both Hoke and Mattison oversee the D-Line. We'll be fine with whoever we get, and I doubt Brandon will have an issue opening up his pocketbooks to get the best.

I hope we go after some NFL talent or someone with southern ties. Someone who is a recruiting guru.

Dick Bumpas or Chris Kiffin would be nice. It would cost us, but it'd be worth it. I guess Tosh would also be a stellar haul as a recruiter, if we could find a way to keep him.

Doesn't Mattison have his roots as a DLine coach, in addition to Hoke? Do you have any insight on why Montgomery left UM for OU? More money, allegiance to Stoops, proximity to beaches (I kid)... I was just curious on why he would leave UM when they are on the up...

It's been reported that Michigan countered with a "competitive package", so doesn't sound like it was money.  Even though they both went to Iowa, they didn't overlap so not clear there would be some sort of allegiance there.  Must have felt it was a better opportunity for him.  With both Hoke and Mattison as DL coaches it's always possible he felt like he didn't have complete autonomy, too, but that's speculation on my part.

If Hoke decides to hire a new dline coach is Ted Gill out of the question? He needs a job, has ties with Hoke at Ball st, has coached some pretty good d lines at MSU. Only knock people could say is MSU fired him but Mark is a genius, said no one ever.

I knew Glen Steele in college.  He was a terrific player and would probably make an effective coach, but he doesn't have the personality of a born recruiter.  Plus, I don't really know what he's up to these days.  So, whether he is a plausible candidate kind of depends on what you want out of a new hire.

Van Bergen?  He's got the personality and energy to be a great recruiter, a love for Michigan, and I don't think he's currently on an NFL roster.  Hell, as long as I'm throwing darts at a dartboard while blindfolded, why not Kovacs?..or Roundtree?

Does anyone know how this has affected Bryan Mone? Would think it might discourage him some possibly.

As for who we are going to hire next.. I think it's going to be another linebacker coach specifically for the strongside. If the indications of Mattison moving down to the D-line with Hoke are true then it only makes sense. Can't wait to find out who it will be and hopefully they can find someone quickly.

We need someone asap. Huge recruiting weekend and we need to make a splash to keep all the top targets interested. I know Coach Hoke and Mattison are still holding their own but we need a younger guy like Montgomery who can relate just a little bit better. No matter what this is Michigan and that will sell itself.

recruiting  is always a key part of the job.

mattison remains a great recruiter but men in their  60s may have limited stamina and patience for pursuing the commitment of 15-18 year old boys.

hoke and mattison have the d-line technique, teaching and motivation under control.
