Do you know that money was an issue for Montgomery?
“He was on the other side of the court, screaming: ‘Good shot, Kev!’” Durant said, shaking his head in delight. “I’m thinking, this guy’s an All-American type of teammate right there.”
Do you know that money was an issue for Montgomery?
That's what I think too. Add an amzing recruiter to the already stellar coaching staff and we'll be set.
Dick Bumpas or Chris Kiffin would be nice. It would cost us, but it'd be worth it. I guess Tosh would also be a stellar haul as a recruiter, if we could find a way to keep him.
Doesn't Mattison have his roots as a DLine coach, in addition to Hoke? Do you have any insight on why Montgomery left UM for OU? More money, allegiance to Stoops, proximity to beaches (I kid)... I was just curious on why he would leave UM when they are on the up...
It's been reported that Michigan countered with a "competitive package", so doesn't sound like it was money. Even though they both went to Iowa, they didn't overlap so not clear there would be some sort of allegiance there. Must have felt it was a better opportunity for him. With both Hoke and Mattison as DL coaches it's always possible he felt like he didn't have complete autonomy, too, but that's speculation on my part.
Thanks... I appreciate the input and answers!
With Hoke and Mattison both D-Line guys and personally coaching the D-Line as well, I think Montgomery just wanted to go somewhere where he could have more authority. Can't say I blame him.
Hopefully he doesn't mean Danny Hope.
We hired Danny Hope? Is his stache also coming to Ann Arbor?
Recruiting specialist...make it happen Dave.
If Hoke decides to hire a new dline coach is Ted Gill out of the question? He needs a job, has ties with Hoke at Ball st, has coached some pretty good d lines at MSU. Only knock people could say is MSU fired him but Mark is a genius, said no one ever.
Ray Lewis. Don't party with him.
Based on Hoke's track record with staff decisions, I am confident that he will make an excellent hire.
Glen Steele anyone?
I knew Glen Steele in college. He was a terrific player and would probably make an effective coach, but he doesn't have the personality of a born recruiter. Plus, I don't really know what he's up to these days. So, whether he is a plausible candidate kind of depends on what you want out of a new hire.
Van Bergen? He's got the personality and energy to be a great recruiter, a love for Michigan, and I don't think he's currently on an NFL roster. Hell, as long as I'm throwing darts at a dartboard while blindfolded, why not Kovacs?..or Roundtree?
Maybe after a few years in the NFL. From my understanding Van Bergen is committed to making a run at the pros for as long as he can.
seems a more typical route to coaching staff.
(ohio did well with moving fickel through the ranks from ga to dc and vrabel went directly to coaching staff from nfl)
My name is Charles Woodson would you like to see my hardware?
If he doesn't get drafted, I'm recommending Denard he can coach being awesome.
Denard will get drafted.
I know we all hate rumors but I heard that................
I can never figure out what the hell it is that you are talking about.
The answer is obvious: Lloyd Brady.
If I recall correctly before the hiring of Montgomery was announced, Brian's ideal candidate was Beyonce.
Is Jay-Z also coming? Oh wait, package deals rarely pan out.
Does anyone know how this has affected Bryan Mone? Would think it might discourage him some possibly.
As for who we are going to hire next.. I think it's going to be another linebacker coach specifically for the strongside. If the indications of Mattison moving down to the D-line with Hoke are true then it only makes sense. Can't wait to find out who it will be and hopefully they can find someone quickly.
Right after posting the bryan mone question I had a guy close to the situation tell me that the Montgomery to Oklahomawill not be effecting Bryan at all and he is committed to The University of Michigan til' the end!!!!
Very good news
Thanks for the Mone update.
I was curious about that situation as well. I'm pretty excited about him
She can teach the DL how to use their hands.
That's not funny.....
A natural fit.
We need someone asap. Huge recruiting weekend and we need to make a splash to keep all the top targets interested. I know Coach Hoke and Mattison are still holding their own but we need a younger guy like Montgomery who can relate just a little bit better. No matter what this is Michigan and that will sell itself.
What's Hoke's brother up to now?
Let's hire away newly hired DL sparty coach Ron Burton... Nah, what the heck was I thinking.
He was at Air Force. Had a rep as a decent technician but was not know for being involved in recruiting. Also was a holdover from DeBerry's staff, I'm not exactly shaking in fear over this hire by MSU.
recruiting is always a key part of the job.
mattison remains a great recruiter but men in their 60s may have limited stamina and patience for pursuing the commitment of 15-18 year old boys.
hoke and mattison have the d-line technique, teaching and motivation under control.
I for one would be in favor of seeing Jim Herrmann comeback as a linebacker coach and having Mattison mover to DL coach. Just think about the attention Michigan will get from recruits with 2 former NFL coaches.
No. As much as I hate to admit it, Mattison will eventually have to retire and I don't want Jim Herrmann around when that happens.
Since most head coaches, like AD's have unofficial "lists" of future replacements, I would imagine that Hoke has already made a few phone calls. Whoever it is, I'm pretty sure the sky isn't going to fall over the departure of one coach.
As usual, I'm going to trust Brady Hoke to bring the right coach in.
Jim Boccher is doing these days
