Who Can We Reasonably Expect to Replace Gerg Next Year?
This is obviously putting the cart before the horse, since Gerg still has a job, but I'm interested in seeing a discussion of who might be a legitimate and reasonable option to replace him come season's end. I know that there is some discussion of this in other threads, but I thought it would be good to try to consolidate the discussion in one place so that it doesn't get lost and/or repeated.
Edit - This thread is based upon the (obvious) premise that Rodriguez returns next year.

It was so poorly placed and horrible that it was hilarious. Not in a funny way, but in a sad "retarded person calling someone retarded" way. Bravo!

two options:
1) casteel
2) moeller/trgovac.

I would like to see someone with close ties to the program.
November 1st, 2010 at 2:34 PM ^
How would close ties to the program make him any better of a DC? When can't put limitations on the search, if RR stays let's get the best damn DC available.

Jim Harbaugh for DC
November 1st, 2010 at 7:33 PM ^
Why do you think JH would come back home when he is running a great program at a prestigious (sp?) university in a WARM climate ?
November 1st, 2010 at 7:58 PM ^
First off - no one really thinks Harbaugh will be the DC. Also, Stanford University is prestigious, but the football program is not at all compared to UM. And Harbaugh played here. If he had the chance to come back to UM and be the second coming of Bo (likely for a lot more money than he's making at Stanford), I wouldn't be surprised if he did it.
JH has probably reached his ceiling at Stanford. A couple of the other teams are up and coming, and USC probably won't be down for too long. If he were to leave, within the next couple years would be the right time.
November 1st, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
Yes, that was the joke.
And don't think the irony of a "(sp?)" tag on the word "prestigious" is lost on me. It surely isn't.

No one predicted RR would hire GERG after we went all 3-3-5 on Purdue two years ago w/ Puppet Schafer at the helm, so good luck guessing RR's next hire in this thread.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:45 PM ^
Tony Gibson is promoted internally. *shotgun in mouth*
Realistically I think you start backing truckloads of cash up to Casteel's house until he comes here if we retain RR. Guy with a respectable track record and proven results working with RR (although perhaps he stated at WVU because he felt RR was too much of a control freak, who knows).
If RR for whatever reason agrees to completely clean house I'd make a play on Trgovacs and let him hire whoever he wants for position coaches.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:50 PM ^
I certainly hope Gibson is NOT promoted, but I don't think he's as bad as everyone says. He has had practically the WORST collective unit of talent/experience since arriving. Honestly, I'd be fine keeping him around so long as Casteel were to come.
November 6th, 2010 at 6:06 PM ^
...as much attrition and failure to develop high level recruits at a position group as Michigan has had with the defensive backfield, it is generally laid at the feet of the position coach.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:43 PM ^
I think we should start an MGoCollectionPlate to raise enough money to get Jeff Casteel to come here.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:43 PM ^
Assuming Bill Stewart continues to drive WVU into the ground (and they could easily lose their next 4 games), I think RR will try one more time to get Casteel to come up and run the 3-3-5 for us.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:43 PM ^
Seems to make sense. Smart guy, close ties to RR, and has legitimate experience running the 3-3-5 effectively, unlike GERG
November 1st, 2010 at 1:43 PM ^
You owe me a Coke.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
The problem I see with Casteel is that he is probably looking for some stability. Just my guess, but he'd probably rather sign up for a program where the staff won't immediately be on the hot seat ala Rich Rod if he's still here next year.
I'd love to have him though, but I find it hard to believe any amazing DC will want to take over this mess.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:50 PM ^
I have to assume that RR has already tried to get him, from day 1, and both Shafer and GERG were back-up choices.
I understand if the guy doesn't want to leave a good situation. Which is why we should all hope for a Hindenburg-type end to WVU's season.

a Hindenburg-type end to WVU's season
I've been hoping for that for the last three years since every person I've met from West Virginia started showing me irrational hatred (when your administration won't adequately pay assistants and upgrade facilities, you shouldn't be mad at your golden boy coach and his new traditional powerhouse when he is forced to leave for real big time opportunities).
November 1st, 2010 at 1:51 PM ^
I was thinking this too. Depending on who RR hires, maybe DB can give him a contract extension with a lower buyout to help with recruits and with the DC/position coaches.
November 1st, 2010 at 2:37 PM ^
On the other hand, if Casteel completely turns around our D he would get a lot praise nationally and set himself up for a future HC job.
November 1st, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
...sold?
"Yeah, but if we win the lottery, we'll have to pay all those damn taxes."
November 1st, 2010 at 2:40 PM ^
Look at it this way:
All next year's coordinator will likely have to do is keep teams to < 30 points. The offense will take care of the rest. That doesn't sound too risky to me.
November 1st, 2010 at 5:44 PM ^
That sounds familiar...
November 1st, 2010 at 7:17 PM ^
and take a shit before the game, rather than right there on national TV during the game with everyone watching and all.
November 6th, 2010 at 6:09 PM ^
...you have talent at every position group, however, that talent either hasn't been developed (or had questionable development) or is being criminally misused (Craig Roh).
Get someone in here who'll run a 3-4 (with Roh at his natural position as rush linebacker in a 3-4) and spend some serious time developing our 4 star recruits in the D-backfield and you'll see a tremendously improved defense.
November 3rd, 2010 at 12:52 AM ^
Why didn't he come in the first place?
November 1st, 2010 at 1:44 PM ^
How about tomorrow? Anyone with any sort of intelligence level, coaching experience or not, could do a better job than this undeserving-of-his-hair ignoramus we have right now.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:59 PM ^
The contrast between your comment and your signature is humorous.
November 1st, 2010 at 2:43 PM ^
Well, Robinson is ruining this team. The players, fans, and other coaches don't deserve this level of incompetence.
And I did notice my ironic sig before I read your comment, but I'll stand by it the instant Robinson is removed from the coaching staff.

Yeah, but who would win? A Ditka defense, or a hurricane?
November 3rd, 2010 at 12:21 AM ^
Trick question: Ditka is all and everything so he is part of the hurricane and the hurricane is part of him.
November 3rd, 2010 at 11:06 AM ^
Ditka would dispatch his hair to distract the hurricane from one side while he wallops the hurricane into the last century from the other side.
