White pants @ Iowa?

Submitted by mpharmd98 on

From the Uniwatch Blog today (it's about 80% down the post):

According to a post on the Chris Creamer board, there are rumors a-flyin’ about Michigan possibly wearing white pants on October 10th at Iowa.

Anyone else heard this rumor? I loved the thin blue/maize/blue striping from the mid 70s.

It would be interesting, but bringing back a monochrome uniform may ultimately open the door for an all maize uniform in the future and I dont think the Michigan faithful are quite ready for that. It would be interesting looking to say the least, just not sure it would be 'Michigan'

the Gopher game on Saturday night, they were given enough ammunition against all-yellow jerseys for the next ten years.

All white jerseys, however, would be sweet.

Written by ESPN contributor Paul Lukas, it's a daily dose on all things sports uniforms and logos. I used to be a religious reader, but it's got a pretty heavy lean on baseball.

That being said, usually the "bottom of a huge obscure article" area is his Other News section, which is often more interesting than the lead stuff.

was a pretty legit artist who goes by "GhettoFarmBoy." I've seen some of his stuff, and it's not bad. He says he's from Michigan/Indiana, and for all I know it might be one of you.

BUT his original source is "According to two U of M boards." No press release, no insider info. We've all heard plenty of rumbling about white pants here before... but where did the Oct. 10 at Iowa come from?

I know some Rivals poster brought it up. He's proven in the past that he lives with some walk ons or is friends with some guys on the team something along those lines. But I thought that his post was at an odd time for a student on campus, leading me to believe he was still drunk or excited from the game/night and could possibly just be stirring things up. But the Iowa game came from him. The posters name is Datnukahead or something like that, and he's had good info in the past.

I have no idea if there is any truth to it, but figured I'd try to provide a little information from where I saw the rumor originate.

Just the first time I'd actually seen anything other than fan rumblings regarding this white pants stuff.

FOR THE RECORD... I don't want 'em. I'll go on record again that the change I'd like to see on the away uniform is to bring back the 80's era jersey WITH ONE COLOR NUMBERS

While I like the white pants idea (and totally abhor any idea that includes blue pants or maize jerseys, which seems to also be floating around), I absolutely agree on the 80's white jersey. Classic look, and emblematic of an era when we were quite successful. I'd even love to go back to the jerseys with the M's on the sleeves (1997-2004). I've never liked what Nike or adidas did with our whites since 2005. The yellow bib/stripes thing just looks stupid.

(can you tell I read UniWatch first thing every morning?)

I used to be a religious UniWatchBlog reader too. Now I just check in occasionally. My hatred of the M road uniforms with the yellow around the blue numbers is what originally hooked me into the site.

I'm a huge baseball fan, so I don't mind the baseball emphasis.

I'm against white pants, but I'm a staunch traditionalist.

Interesting...

I will reserve judgment until I see them on tv. However, I am usually not in favor of messing with the uniform. If they ended up looking like Texas' away uniform, they might not be bad.

Could be cool looking. My attitude is that the road unis can be changed (except the helmet), as long as we don't go Oregon. The road unis have changed numerous times throughout the years.

The home uniforms simply may not be changed. Ever.

All Maize in basketball = sweet. All Maize in football = WTF was Minnesota wearing? Not sure why it works in one sport and not in another. Six Zero - any thoughts on the different impact in different sports?

Funny thing was, until now, I'd always thought they were all-white in the late 70s Rose Bowls too -- but I think it was just that I was watching them on a black-and-white TV, and never realized the pants were yellow.

Meanwhile, what Minnesota's experiment (http://www.mndaily.com/multimedia/photos/2009/09/13/0914p1fb0914) tells us is that if Michigan is to ever wear a yellow jersey (and I do believe at some point they should), they'd better damn well wear blue pants with it.

I can confirm the rumor. I heard it firsthand from a very reputable source. I hope the pants have stripes down the side or something...I hate the plain-all-white look like Texas.

Yeah, c'mon, Bo had the team wear them. That would confirm that RichRod is a Michigan Man, right?

/sarcasm

Srsly, I think it would be a good look. As others have said, as long as it's the aways, I'm fine with it. Keep the home unis traditional.

Why does everyone seem to want single color uniforms? I'm not even a huge fan of our away colors, and would rather the team wore the maize and blue home uniforms for every game.

I absolutely hate it when we wear maize pants on the road against a team (typically Iowa) that wears yellow pants. This has long been a pet peeve of mine.

My solution, however, was not to wear white pants - it was to wear blue pants* with the white road jerseys. For a large number of years (college, etc.), I would typically wear my white U-M jerseys with blue sweatpants, and I loved the look.
__________

*with the understanding that we would never NEVER NEVER NEVER wear blue-on-blue.

Blue pants wouldn't look good. There's a (pseudo-)science to this. Teams almost always wear their lighter color for their pants. We wear maize, OSU wears gray, PSU wears white, etc. You don't wear the dark color on your pants (unless you are also wearing it on your jersey, which some teams do). You basically never see a team wear a white top and dark pants.

Thanks to Pete Carroll at USC, you can now go "color vs color" in jerseys as along as there's enough contrast between the two teams(ie Michigan blue vs UCLA blue--Yes, but Michigan blue vs Penn State blue--No). The rules don't cover pants or helmets, just jerseys.

So given that, here's MHO about what our future unis should be:

1) Michigan should always wear the home blue jerseys and maize pants at home (duh), AND wear them whenever possible on the road, esp at East Lansing, Columbus, and bowl games!

2) If blue jerseys aren't possible on the road due to dark jerseys on the home team (ie @PSU, @Ill, @NW, @Iowa, @Pur, @ND), then wear a new primary road uniform of maize jerseys and blue pants!

3) If for some reason maize jerseys aren't possible either, then break out the traditional white jerseys and maize pants.

4) Just say no to all-white.

Television.

In the 1950's, TV was black and white and sucky all-over. TV viewers needed a high-contrast between the two teams just so you could tell who was who.

Now that nearly everyone has a color TV, this white vs color jersey is no longer a issue.

Prior to TV, BOTH teams wore their home colors everywhere. The reason we have our distictive helmets (thx Fritz) was so that our passers could spot their receivers.

Please for the love of god noooooo... :-(

Don't like it... Esp. w/ the yellow side stripe thing we have courtesy of Adidas... The white pants make it stand out even more and look like a total eyesore.

They've got COMPLETELY the wrong shade of blue on that white-on-blue mockup above. It really doesn't do it justice.

That said, the white-on-whites (shown for Forcier and Odoms above) look awesome. Again, only for use when the opposing (home) team wears yellow-ish pants (i.e. Iowa).

Do we have a definitive answer on whether this is truly happening? I know there were a lot of rumors flying around, but never heard for sure if it was happening.

Either way I'll be in Iowa City Saturday to see first hand. If its going to be a black out I think I'll go with the Steve Breaston away jersey for max contrast.
