Which walk-ons will get scholarships?

Submitted by caup on

If, as has been rumored, Mike Williams and Steve Watson aren't on the roster for their 5th year, then we will only have 61 recruited scholarship players on the team.

(Is Brandon Herron going to come back for his 5th year?  If not, then the magic number is only 60.)

Walk-ons gettting free rides will add to that number. So which walk-ons will the new staff give scholarships to?

My guess is that Kovacs and Grady get schollies, which reduces the number of available scholarships to 22 for the incoming class.

Other walk-ons who have played a decent amount of time are: Heininger, Leach, McColgan, and Van Slyke.

But I'm not sure any of those guys warrant a scholarship. Those guys were all admitted to M on their own and they intended on paying their own way regardless.

I doubt the coaches will be handing out too many walk-on scholarships this year. They're expected to build the team with guys that fit their system, and walk-ons don't really serve that purpose.

Too hard to say who will and won't when we don't know much but on the field production. We don't know things like if they're a great study partner, weight room warrior, general locker room leader, etc. These things could be just as valuable if not more than just tackles, INTs, sacks, and so on....

He already got a scholarship last year. But that came after he played extensively and then ended up starting all 13 games last year. None of the other guys you mentioned have had or will have that impact. Except maybe Grady.

It depends on how many player's they're able to sign for this class. It they can get near 24, hardly any walkons will get scholarships.

I would assume the pecking order is something like Kovacs-Heininger-Leach-Van Slyke.

I remember hearing that Van Slyke was supposed to be our holder before he got hurt, thats pretty important for those made field goals that we've been missing right?
