Which recruit can we not afford to lose

Submitted by Magga Saraivah on

WIth the current instability with both our Coach & AD it is inevitable that our recruits will at least maintain contacts with other schools.  Out of the current 9 recruits which players can we afford to lose the least ?

I actually think 3 are critical:

1) Alex Malzone - we really need a QB especially one who seems to have a genuine love for Michigan and has done nothing but win championships at Brother Rice.

2) Grant Newsome - OL depth is critical.  We all have learned what can happen when we whiff even a single year at this position.

3) Brian Cole - We need dynamic playmakers and we need to keep him away from Sparty.

I'm going with Malzone.  We need need need one of Morris-Speight-Malzone to become "the guy."  3 good options makes that more likely than 2.

I agree with Newsome at #2.  Any other spot can be made up for in the next class if we hire a good coach.

If we hire Harbaugh, they'll all be back and many more will be clamoring to come in.

We absolutely need to keep Malzone. I had a similar conversation with my buddy a few days ago, and he had some interesting comments. He is good friends with Malzone's older brother and was hanging out with Alex during the summer. He recalled catching passes with him and said that every single pass was right on the money with very strong velocity. Apparently when talking to Alex, Alex said that he doesn't care who's on the depth chart now, he said he's gonna come in and beat everyone out and start from day one. This confidence, in addition to the fact he's done nothing but win state championships at Brother Rice and has broken nearly every school passing record makes it imperative that we keep him. Luckily for us, I think Malzone is committed to Michigan regardless of the head coach.

Oline is really all I care about, every other position you can find people to contribute early.

with that I wouldn't mind only getting 10 QUALITY recruits this year, and give the new coaching staff a larger class to get "there guys"

Be prepared for maybe only 1 or 2 of the current com mitts to stick. Cost of doing business. Not a single deco mitt should be a surprise, except maybe Runyan. If we score as we should the class will be (at least almost) salvaged. Tell me a someone else's committ won't listen to whom we should hire.

Want to keep our top three in state guys because they are good and we need bragging rights. Newsome is key for the line and leadership. I really think Malzone is the real deal and this team needs good QB play. Harbaugh would keep them all and then some. My guess is the kids that love Michigan would like to see a coaching change and are hoping for a big name coach to come in based on current affairs.

100% Malzone. Not only are we in desperate need of a QB, but his efforts in recruiting others and convincing them to stay are going to prove to be of critical importance.

Should keep:

Malzone is unlikely to bolt, Michigan is his dream school.

Newsome said he committed to the University of Michigan, not the University of Brady Hoke.

David is not going anywhere else.

Runyan is not going anywhere else.

We might keep:

Thought Kinnell was solid, let's hope he's not going hillbilly on us.

Weber would be a nice addition, but Issac could fill in.

Kirkland may go, but we really could use him on defense.

Probably gone:

Clark, unless Harbaugh can "save" him.

Who knows:

That leaves Cole, the most explosive player of the lot, and maybe the least replaceable considering who is left in this class on the recruitment board.

No surprise here but I listened to a local Philly sports radio station today that interviewed Jon Runyan Sr. and he said his son is not going anywhere.  Committed to the university, not the coachig staff.

Sr. also said he is sick of people coming up to him and asking what the hell's the matter with Michigan.

Quit stressing it. Its only going to get worse before it gets better. Im not losing any sleep over this. Overall depth is better now than when hoke took over. Only position of concern should be qb.

I get the malzone love because our qb play has been crap but honestly, whoever our next coach is, I would prefer them to hand pick a 2015 qb not just take the qb right down the road. God knows what system we will be in next year any way. I would prefer to keep weber and cole. We lack playmakers.

Right now it looks like doom and gloom because the choice for recruits is between Brady Hoke and nothing.

When the nothing becomes Jim Harbaugh or Les Miles or some other known quantity, it will bring some of those recruits back.  If it's a big name hire, it will likely bring in some recruits not even on our radar.

A good hire can easily "save" this class.  It will look gloomy until then, though.

Alex Malzone.

He can adapt to more than just a pocket manball offense.  Gives the next coach some flexibility in running the offense he wants to run without being locked in to a particular offense.

It rather boils down to position and/or position group, in my own estimation. To that end, probably Malzone - who likely wouldn't go anywhere else anyway - and Newsome for some additional OL depth would be the likely candidates for me. I would rather simply keep as many as possible, but I think that building depth on offense might be a tad more adavantageous in the near future for Michigan.

Malzone has been a true-blue kid since he apparently was born, so losing him would be a huge psychological blow.

But at this point, nobody is indispensible especially given the fact that you only have recruits for 4-5 years at best.  So getting the right coach in now is way more essential.
