Which piece of "Michigan Tradition" would you like to see return? (other than winning)

Submitted by trueblue262 on

Which part of Michigan's tradition would you like to see return (other than the wins)? There has been some chatter on the board about helmet decals, or getting rid of the Legends numbers, etc. I personally, would like to see the Victors walk make a return in some form. I think it was good for both the players and the fans. Thoughts?

Punt and Counterpunt - paper programs (or whatever they were).  It was great getting the rosters of both teams for free, while walking into the stadium, and reading the Punt v. Counterpunt.

And the paper programs made a great impromptu visor for sunny days and umbrella for rainy days.  I still have a bunch of them all rolled up in thier visor or umbrella configuration depending on the weather that day.

Obviously there's a ton of passion related to this topic amongst folks on the board (and likely even among lurkers). Literally thousands of opinions.

My suggesion is this: given that we're in the offseason (despite basketball, hockey, recruiting, etc. things will still be relatively slow - and there's still plenty of time to impact the upcoming season) and have a potentially receptive Athletic Dept / head coach, I think Brian & co. could / should organize a formal survey on this topic to somewhat seriously see what the most passionate fans really want.

If it were curated properly and answers like (too expen$ive!!!) were not the focus, I think there could be some solid insight around what types of things are truly missed by fans - and at the minimum someone in the AD would take notice of the existence of the data set.

My personal hot takes:

  • More MMB, less (or no) rawk
  • More earlier games if possible (even living on the west coast right now, let's be honest, some of the games would be fine if they're not in the 3:30 or a prime time spot). Plus then folks can actually pay attention to other important games that day.
  • Actual maize, not neon yellow (and MVictors always has good ideas to get the away jerseys right)
  • Kill the "you suck" - not sure if this has been tried, but what about just replacing with "Go Blue" - I HATE that they tried to cover it up by adding notes to the song - douse that with fire, please.

No way, we need primetime and more night games. We aren't some low visibility regional team like MSU. We have 8 years of mostly shit seasons and still draw huge ratings. When we win people love it other than 3 fan bases. Green is ugly and nobody cares, Notre Dame is great but I hate them and Ohio cheats plus people hate Urban.

I guess most recently, it was actually Craig Barker, but MVictors RT'd and I'm pretty sure has had something to say about this topic in the past - here's a link to the uniform timeline which highlights what's being discussed:

Originally, as far as I can remember, people actually didn't say anything and it was just a tomahawk chop.

Then, folks started to push for "the claw" which always seemed to have a mixed response. Personally, I always advocated the hammer (a fist) as in the defense putting the hammer down on the opposing offense, but that obviously didn't ever pick up.

Then folks started yelling "You Suck" at the end (Yost is a decent bet though most of those cheers end in "You just suck..." which is the culmination of generally more creative cheers there so I'm okay with it. Anyhow, that evolved to the weird singing of "You Suck" which should just go away. Yelling "you suck" on its own just isn't creative and we can do better, in my opinion.

Before the new scoreboards were put up, the MMB used to wait for the team to take the field with a single drum beat. I think it was better than any pump up video has ever been

I hated the Legends Jerseys being worn throughout the length of a career. One game is ok and I even thought when DG coming out in 2013 against ND wearing Harmon's 98 was pretty cool to honor him that way.

But it really lost it's inspirational significance when #98 couldn't complete a pass to #1 against Rutgers or Maryland an entire year later. If they're going to do that again, make our student athletes truly earn the patch or jersey, wear it for one game and be done. Let them make their own legends.

I don't know if this is so much a tradition as this is just a mentality. I want the team to have the mentality of lining up across from the other guy with the intention of knocking him flat on his ass. From the guys in the trenches down to the punter.

I hate using the word soft, but there were so many times over the past few years where the team just looked soft, and it got consistently outmuscled and beat to a pulp, physically, by better teams. Hoke preached physicality but never delivered it. I want Harbaugh to deliver physicality with a vengeance.

I am a big fan of the music in the stadium. I remember it without the music vs recent games and think it helps get the crowd going. we need more noise and anything that helps with that I am game for.

Bring back $20 parking.

1. They were before my time but toilet paper after touchdowns and Whiskey the dog.

2. Something to keep? More people standing up and yelling when Michigan is on defense.

No more uniformz. Keep the home uniforms the same, take those maize stripes off the away unis.
When a program wins, recruits don't care about different uniforms (Bama)
So yes bring back winning as well.

I want to be able to enjoy one amazing moment of Michigan football history without Turn Down for What or an Eminem song blasting in my ears (or Cherry Pie or Sweet Caroline or anything)

I get that it makes wasted people feel really excited and it's a "wow experience" for first time or occasional attendees. I even like rap music. When you go to every home game it gets tired really quickly. This goes double for basketball games.

bring back the paper programs that were given out on the corner --great items -- you get to see the roster of both teams -- some stats & easy to refer to during the game --

people will still buy the regular $5 program as their souvenir to keep - but the paper program was such a nice touch to have at hand each game

The thing where the band, cheerleaders and one flag waver bunch up in a circle with the flag sticking up out of the middle waving.

Oh, and the tradition of allowing bottled water into the stadium... I kind of find the current ban on water disrespectful to our Great Lakes.

Virtually elimate all rap crap and other BS music!

Bring back small group of the Band roaming the stands and playing classic favorites, Dudley Do-Right, Rocky and Bullwinkle, etc.

I wish they would put National Championships and possibly B1G Title years up on the blue suites. They look too bear to me and I think that it would be a nice touch.

Biff and Bennie.  The real Wolverines:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biff,_the_Michigan_Wolverine

JK JK JK.  PETA would go absolutely apeshit.

Does anyone else miss real grass?  My friends and I snuck in to the Big House late one night and played 2 on 2 with a nerf football back when we had real grass.  They had just irrigated and we would dive and slide for miles.  We also ran zone read before RR ever got there...

I'm not a fan of alternate jerseys for big games. I think it was a neat thing for the first under the lights game, but since then I complained more about it than being interested in it.

I think the young athletes enjoy the neat new cool looking items. Like the gloves, being able to hold up both hands and show your school's logo. That was really cool when Nike introduced that. New helmets, facemasks, visors, those things are fine to change. I mean helmet styles, like a Bike helmet vs the new Nike super ligthweight deluxe 4000. Just don't change the look of the uniform, no need for that.
