To Which M-Clan Do You Belong?

Submitted by MGoShoe on

Over at MVictors.com, Greg Dooley has collaborated with Craig Barker of The Hoover Street Rag (aka MGoUser Yostal) and MVictors contributor Lew to develop:

...what “we” look like at [this] given point in Michigan history.

Clan descriptions at the MVictors link above.

I put myself squarely in the Fierce Pragmatists camp with a dash of Decatur (natch). How about you? Of course, if you're looking at this, you're also an Obsessive in Craig's 80-10-10 casual-serious-obsessive breakdown, so don't even bother with that. That is, as they say, a given.

I'm in the Rich Rodriguez / Bo Schembechler clan.

Why?

Because according to Tom Beaver, Bo was reportedly a big fan of Rich Rodriguez.

Also, a Michigan Man doesn't ever have to come from Michigan, like  the inbred types controlling things now.

Bo was from Ohio State. Gary Moeller graduated from Ohio State. Yost was from West Virginia. Rich Rodriguez is from West Virginia.

The man never got a deserved 4th year.

I'm in the Rod we Trusted clan.  Which....according to that snazzy pie graph has shrunk to a mere 5% of the population over the past month.  And the Rebellion in which the completely NAIL my feelings to the letter over the Hoke hire.

These categories are bullshit.

There are no categories containing the words/phrases: "drunk", "angry", "borderline alcoholic on Michigan football saturdays", "loud", or "obnoxious around non-M friends".

I would if it weren't almost 6 PM CST on Friday and I was in the process of leaving the office.

Home before the bar, here is what I think our fanbase breaks into:

"The Family": 20%.  Michigan has been in your bloodline for years.  Your family knows the importance of understanding the Michigan system, and realize that the term "Michigan Man" is overblown and misunderstood.  Of primary importance is to "remain Michigan" and keep the tradition of Michigan excellence alive.

"The Broken Family": 20%.  Your average grey hair, "DOWN IN FRONT" type who remembers caring about the program before any of the students were even born.  They are often disgruntled about not having family members carry on the Michigan difference, as all of their grandchildren go to State or Central.

"Educated Wal-Mart Wolverines": 10%.  The fan who didn't go to Michigan, and didn't have any of their family go to Michigan, but loves Michigan sports still the same.  Follows at least one of the pay sites or MGoBlog.  Is more knowledgable about Michigan sports than the average Michigan fan.  Follows off-season and recruiting like a dog.

"Wal-Mart Wolverines you Actually See at Wal-Mart": 10%.  A cousin to the "Frat Less Hard" group below, these are the fans that will wave the Michigan fan in good times, or in bad times when Michigan products are on sale at Kohl's.  They really don't know much about Michigan, or its athletes, and if you give them a "go blue" they will look at you oddly.

"Frat Hard": 10%.  Your average greek student or alum who cares very deeply for the program.  Who cares that half of this group came from out-of-state and didn't deeply care about Michigan before they were a student.  They care now, and Michigan sports are a huge part of their life.  They bleed maize and blue, even if the family members before them weren't Michigan Men/Women.

"Frat Less Hard": 10%.  The greek students/alumni who wouldn't be caught dead reading MGoBlog or really caring about the team other than when the games are being played.  Members of these groups like to post things on facebook during September-November that will make the average diehard cringe.

Other: 20%.  If you don't fit into the above, you're here.

Well, it's pretty obvious which one I am. I self-identify as the 'educated' cultivar but that might be someone else's judgment to make. I did grow up in an atmosphere steeped in Michigan sports, dreamed of attending, consider that presently a dream deferred, and did/do have family who attend.

Rebelious cotton-pickin pragmatist here.  But, even though I'm not excited about the hire, I admire Hoke's love for Michigan.  If he wins and doesn't coach scared, like I think Lloyd used to many times, then I think I'll be happy with him.

I'm a combination of  "Cotton Pickin' Blues", and "Fierce Pragmatists". There's also a dabble of  "Second Estate" in there as well, although not nearly as much as some people.

65% Firce Pragmatists

25% In Rod We Trusted

10% The Rebellion

I also agree with the Bo Clan that the interview process was a charade that has once and for all destroyed the myth of the Pimp Hand, but I'm not old enough to be part of that clan.

Description -- In between In Rod We Trusted and the Rebellion

Reaction -- In between Pragmatist and Decatur

Going forward, I'll talk myself into excitement and if necessary skew my look at the data.

The guy was well on track to do what he was brought here to do; overhaul the offense and make us light the scoreboard up. Mistakes cost us big and resulted in us lighting up the yards category, but not always the points. Returning as many players as we are next year and for that matter the next, we had great things to look forward to. Defensively, we were unacceptable this year, but we also return just about everybody, many of them freshman who will be back for a further two years, and so long as we get a halfway competant coordinator, have nowhere to go but up. Even so, the defense need only be middling to kind of good if the offense progresses at the rate it had been.

On the other side of the coin, it might have been best to just let it go. RR has been under fire from the moment he got here and gotten the shaft from fans and the media at every turn. Is it fair? No. Was it ever going to change? Probably not. Maybe it was best to just let him go, but I feel in that case he should have been given one more year and if that didn't result in a championship or two to shut everyone up once and for all, given the opportunity to resign and take a gig elsewhere. He did not deserve having this dragged on until after the bowl game and then left with no place to go next year. The poor guy has basically wasted 3 years of his life for absolutely nothing. He gave up everything he had at WV to coach Michigan, and we just told him he didn't belong.

i would have thought the people in South Bend would go a little easy on us given your recent history with the coaching carousel. For your sake, I hope Brian Kelly has at least 10 wins and is hunting for a national championship by year three. Otherwise, we will be talking (again) about Irish factions (cue latest billboard mocking HC in South Bend).

But right now I'm too busy bouncing around randomly among Anger, Confusion, Hope and Depression.

Edit: My younger brother is a die-hard Domer and we made a bet at the beginning of the year as to which team would end up with the better record. By mid-season, I thought it was a lock and I was trying to decide how to go easy on him. Unfortunately, this bet turned out to be a very, very bad idea and now have to trade in my UM hat for a ND hat and wear it everywhere for the next 12 months (except official UM events, such as football and basketball games). My sanity is on thin ice right now so please cut me some slack.

just realize that no matter how you feel it wont change anything, just sit back and hope for the best and laugh when you can, or you will go full Brian one of these days.  See another joke, well maybe
