Which comes first: Michigan national title or Lions Super Bowl?

After watching the Lions play yesterday I started to wonder if they would ever win the super bowl.  Just wondering about the knowledgeable MGObloggers.....

Which will happen first

Michigan wins a national championship in football or the Detroit Lions win the super bowl?

That may be too easy since the Lions have been bad for so long.  I also wonder ......

Will the Lions win a first round playoff game before Michigan basketball wins a national championship?

We can dream

Michigan winning the NC will happen first because I could see it happening in the next few years while the Lions are so far away.

I have predicted

that M SB will win the next NC.  This will be in 4 years while the FB team will win one in 8 years.  The Lions will NEVER win a SuperBowl.  Never.  The world will end before the Lions win.

They have a culture of losing much like Lil Bro.  They can have a good year or two but the culture never changes.  Both teams always regress to the mean.  It is a fundamental law of Physics, Im sure.  I cant quote it exactly but it does exist.

The Mayans will be right about the end of the world

Before the Lions win a Super Bowl.

It may be simultaneous.

Michigan has a stronger

Michigan has a stronger foundation for success in the next few years, but one can see dramatic changes fairly quickly in NFL teams. As it stands now, I see better signs of progress at Michigan. The Lions are underachieving.

I would say Michigan winning

I would say Michigan winning the national championship.  Crazy things happen in college football, and while crazy things can occur in the NFL, Michigan has more pieces in place to make it happen before the Lions do.

with the way michigan is

with the way michigan is recruiting, it will be putting itself into consistent national title contention for the foreseeable future. detroit will never win a super bowl as long as the fords own the team. they have shown nothing but utter incompetence, and the elite playmakers they do get (megatron, barry sanders, suh to a certain degree) are not enough to overcome the rest of the team's shortcomings. the fords can't effectively run that team. they've shown extremely poor ownership spanning several decades. why would it stop now?

Are you kidding me with this question?

Have you watched or are aware of the LIONS HISTORY FOR THE LAST 50 YEARS?

Ever since the dumb ass Fords bought them practically, while in that time U-M has been contending for 'Ships just about that whole time and having only half a one is a damn shame in that time period, many squads were worthy for us but had bad luck here or there or Bo was too conservative.

Answer is M

Agree, sorta...

WCF's first act when he gained control of the front office, on the way to buying the team outright, was to trade Bobby Layne.  Thus, Layne's astute prediction that the Lions "won't do anything for 50 years."

The only thing Layne got wrong was WCF's lifespan.  Then again, many think that Layne did get WCF's lifespan correctly, and that WCF is only being kept "alive" in an extended "Weekend at Bernie's" scenario.

which Michigan national championship comes first, basketball or football?

I'll go with basketball.

I don't know. I feel like

I don't know. I feel like we're going to lose quite a few pieces after this season and we'll be good but not national title contenders next season. So for bball this season will be out best shot in at least a few years.

For football, we're not only historically more of a power (this humans voting us higher) but I also think we're more likely to sustain high success.

Therefore I think football wins a NC before bball. But who knows--anything can happen in March.

Burke will be a huge loss but

Burke will be a huge loss but it is possible Walton and Albrecht combination will mitigate it to some extent if not entirely.

I can see Hardaway Jr. leaving also after this year but don't think anybody else does this year.

Think GRIII and Zak Irvin will be very good for us next year and Mark Donnal is said to be a prototypical Beilein big man.

We need to see how 2014 recruiting shakes out as we've had some misses but have opportunities also but next year should be a very good contender team also.

We may be reaching a tipping point for basketball of becoming a perennial power but agree we'll have to see.

evidence points to basketball..

but I am going to say football simply because football is voted on and people like us.  Winning a basketball championship takes a six game winning streak with four of those games coming against (more or less) the top 20 teams in the nation...

You can win a football championship just be being voted number one.

I think that only 15-20 teams have a chance each year to win a football championship and recent history would back that up, I think...

A toughie. The Lions do have the most important

element in going for a Super Bowl--a quarterback. That is something that every Lions team since Layne left has not had. They also have an All-World WR, a good # in Broyles, solid tight ends, and two solid backs. The OL needs some fresh blood and they do need a RB with some speed to complement Leshoure and Bell as well as a WR to replace Young.

The Lions do have the beginnings of a good team, but the problem is that they don't have a defense. They also are poorly disciplined which isn't helping their cause any.

Michigan is building on defense and on the line. UM's problem is that they don't have elite talent at RB and WR. Michigan really needs at least one at either of those positions in order to win a NT.

Michigan is probably closer right now, but in the NFL you can get better much quicker than in college. If the Lions add some playmakers on defense and another on offense, I could see them making a serious run assuming that Stafford makes the expected improvement over the offseason.

Michigan is probablt a year away from making a run with the lack of explosive skills players holding them back.

We'll see about Stafford

I'm not sold yet, he pisses me off a lot, he can't scramble that well or throw on the run efficiently and he looks hungover from a fucking kegger from the previous night just about every game.

Mikel & Joique are not fast and dance around too much, like Fitz does. We have Calvin and a couple of decent DLinemen and a lot of discipline issues and a moron of a coach

Manning or Brady can’t scramble that well either.

He does a pretty good job of buying time. The part about being drunk doesn't make any sense. He has put up plenty of yards. What haven't come are the touchdowns. He has forced some balls the past few weeks in trying to make plays. Either way, he is much better than what they have had in a long, long, time.

Leshoure needs to hit the holes better, but Bell does a very good every time he is in there.

empty yards...

this team is the king of empty yards.

they are always down and they can always move... but they never put it in...  which is on the oline, I think.

Lions win SB first

The Lions have a better shot and here is why.  In the draft all things are equal.  At some point the blind squirrel that is Ford senior will stumble into a good GM and coach. Though UM has the brand to recruit well, SEC teams and USC will always be able to recruit better.  Though there is more varience in any college game it is really hard to beat a team that as a significant talent advantage.  That all said I think UM has a better chance of getting to a NC game then the Lions getting to the SB.  It is just they will be like ND and face planted by Alabama.

The lions too much cheating in cfb and nfl teams can turn it around in a year. And the lions do have talent.

The best managed teams win

The best managed teams win Superbowls. With the ownership staying the same I don't see the Lions ever being better than losing in the first round of the playoff. I'd like to say Michigan winning the NC will occur sooner but without greyshirting it'll be a challenge.

The lions have as much of a chance at winning the super bowl as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. As for Michigan, when Al Borges leaves, Michigan will have a shot.

Fords

As several others have noted here, there's almost chance of the Lions doing anything great while the Fords own the team. Their micromanagement of affairs might be the single most amazingly underreported sports story in the history of this state. They must have nasty pictures of all the Detroit sportswriters.

Things that have a greater

Things that have a greater likelihood of happening than the Lions winning the Super Bowl while the Ford family owns the team:

1) Ndamukong Suh winning Sportsman of the Year every single year from here on out until he retires

2) The Patriots winning the next five Super Bowls after firing Bill Belichick and hiring Ron Zook

3) Eastern Michigan running the table and winning the national championship next season

4) The LA Clippers going 82-0

5) Brian Kelly winning a humanitarian of the year award

6) Ryan Leaf coming out of retirement and breaking every major passing record

7) The Big East winning the next five national championships

8) Ohio State committing no major or secondary NCAA violations for the next 20 years

9) Hell freezing over and thawing out (repeatedly)

10) Grandpa Simpson recognizing Missourah

Considering the previous

Considering the previous Natty in football for you guys was 50 years previous to 97, I would say the Lions, since Ford will be long gone in 35 years.

Going Through Historic Odds...

If you look at historic odds for the last four years, you get some intriguing figures. For example, averaging the Super Bowl odds for the Lions in the last week where they were potentially eligible to make the playoffs, their odds of winning the Super Bowl sit around 1,571 to 1 on average. For Michigan football, it falls considerably - the average is about 87 to 1 over the last four years to get to the BCS championship game. For Michigan basketball, it falls further to about 51 to 1 on average over the last four years (obviously, it seems much better recently). So, if the current trends held, Michigan would experience some far more excellent years in a couple sports before the Lions would win the Super Bowl.

Michigan NC (even though it

Michigan NC (even though it seems an uphill battle, given we don't oversign, and current demographics).

The Lions last won a championship in 1957, before there was a Super Bowl.  They have one (1!) playoff win in over half a century of futility.  The best years I can remember were with Barry Sanders, where they'd generally alternate a playoff loss in a weak-schedule season with failing to make the playoffs in a strong-schedule season.

(OK, I wasn't going to look it up, but then I decided not to rely on memory.  In the Super Bowl Era, the Lions made consecutive playoffs in 82-83, and 93-95 .  It felt like alternating, because they otherwise skipped years at the beginning and end of the 90s:  91, 97, 99 [per Pro Football Reference].  Except for 91, it was one-and-done.)

People who talk about blind squirrels and nuts have a point - for other teams.  William Clay Ford is a blind squirrel which also doesn't have a sense of smell.  And maybe doesn't have paws.

There are ten blind squirrels (one Super Bowl appearance, * means win):  Jets*, Ravens*, Bucs*, Saints*, Chargers, Falcons, Titans, Panthers, Seahawks, Cardinals.  It's pretty pathetic when expansion teams get to the Super Bowl before you.  The Bucs started out 0-14 (only to be eventually outdone by the Lions), then 0-12 their 2nd season, before notching their 1st & 2nd wins, beating the formerly hapless Ain'ts, who fired their coach, then the Cards, who also fired their coach.

I expect the Browns, Jags and Texans to make the Super Bowl before the Lions while they are under the curse of William Clay Ford

In theory...

Michigan is on pace to constantly be a top ten team, so they are in the conversation. There aren't that many NFL teams, but I dont think any rational person thinks Detroit is about to be a regular in the top 10 in the NFL.

I would say the Michigan women's hockey team will win a NC before the lions, and the cubs

not even a question...

I was at the lions game yesterday and left at halftime.  That team is pathetic and plays for stats not victory...

Hoke will win a national title in the next ten years.  count on it.  probably 2015

Not sure why

But this subject made me feel really sad. Please God I just want to go to the Super Bowl once. I would spend 5,000 for two seats.

Hoke has a chance!

In a couple years Hoke should have the talent and depth back to normal Michigan standards. That means the team will starg winning B1G championships. Though it is difficult to run the table for an undefeated season.  If Bo had a few good bounces and a few plays here and there he could have won 3 to 4 NC.

I hope Michigan does win a NC in the next ten years but I would be happy if they turn into a dominate 1 or 2 loss team again! As for the Lions! They look like a team that is totally out of phase, mainly due to poor draft selections and coaching. I don't see a real change until the Ford's sell the team. Junior ran the team after '99 and made a horrible mistake of hiring Matt Millen as the GM, and stuck with him way too long. I was more  hopeful about the current coaching staff a few years back  but after this season it looks kind of like a disaster heading forward.

So yes, Michigan has a much better chance of winning a NC then the Lion' do winning a Superbowl!

You're joking right?

Impossible to say anyway.  The Lions will win only when Ford is gone and they hire a good coach and about 5 years have passed to get rid of all the dead wood players from the old regime.  Michigan could win one any time starting in about 3 years.

I'll settle for Michigan winning a Rose Bowl. BTW, is anyone else suprised to learn that the last time that happened Barry Sanders had just played his last season in the NFL?

With all due respect,

Michigan will win several national titles, before the lions play in one Super Bowl. I believe there is a hundred year curse on the Lions now that the fifty year curse has passed. The Spartans will win,,,,,, I don't know, something significant not sure what but something before the Lions do anything...... Go Blue!

I'm remember when the Lions

I'm remember when the Lions were the best team in the NFL. Then again, I also remember when Detroit was called, "The Paris of the Midwest."

That's how old I am...

The Lions will never go to the Super Bowl. Not ever, not as long as Ford owns the team. I don't know why.

Michigan will win a MNC within the next four years.
