Where is the bottom?

Submitted by Roy G. Biv on

Trying to look at this question as rationally as possible.  My fear is:  3-9, Hoke and Brandon fired, ensuing search for coach botched, transfers, de-commits and in general the program in shambles.  That, I think, is the nadir we're headed for.  An admittedly pessimistic outlook.  Someone please talk me off the ledge.

Schlissel says "Their buyouts are how much money?!?  We're not throwing that kind of money away.  Don't do anything.  Athletics are not part of the mission of this University anyway."

-2-10 season, including clubbings against MSU and OSU
-DB is retained by the Board of Regents and a new president not wanting to rattle too many cages in his first year on the job.
-DB reaffirms his complete faith in Hoke by rewarding him with a 10 year, 80 million dollar contract extension. Hoke claps, then goes back to running another great week of practice with lots of competing.
-DB is given a lifetime AD appointment, and is given the new title of Supreme Athletic Overlord. His first order of business after giving Hoke his contract extension is to erect a golden statue of himself right next to the noodle. In one hand he holds an extra large Dominos pizza, and in the other he holds a jar with the collective tears of our entire fanbase.
-Beilein retires. We bring back Amaker.

That'd be rock bottom.

Rock bottom has been perfectly described here above by russale2012. There is not one fucking thing to add to this other than "what the fuck am I supposed to do with the two 10 foot side by side television screens I had installed in my man cave to watch this cluster fuck?"  If anyone has suggestions, I'm open.

Is no bottom. I've learned as a sports fan every time I think I'm at the bottom I discover there is more. Never wonder where the bottom is. We are in a bottomless pit.

I cant see a scenario where Brandon gets fired.  Not when the schools largest donor says that Brandon is the 'most qualified AD in the NCAA'

I just don't care anymore. I'll root for the team and if they win, hooray. If they lose, oh well.

Watching Michigan football used to be a joyous occasion. Now, the experience is completely devoid of it. I never thought things would ever get this low, but indeed they have.

It feels like bottom now, but I know that a 30+ point embarassment of a beatdown is awaiting us 2 weeks down the road in East Lansing, which will be a new low for me and will be our program's 2002 Bobby Williams moment.

I have it on good authority DB is out.  You won't see it publicly announced until a successor is lined up, ala the Borges/Nussmeier transition.  The due dilligence is being done by the powers that be through back channels.

So wherever the bottom is, just be thankful this guy won't be leading us through another hapless few weeks where we obsess over the Domino's plane on FlightAware.

I remember when I thought 2008 was as bad as it could get.  But I also remember when I thought 8-4 was a bad year.  Seeing the team in the 70's, I got spoiled.  The bottom is 2-10 with blowouts at MSU and OSU.  Brandon is not fired.  Then, when Brandon does his next coaching search, is when we really hit bottom.  He will be unable or unwilling to hire someone good, so he will take what he can get and tell us that the person "was always his first choice".  We will want to cry, knowing that we have more years of hopelessness in front of us.  There was a time in my life when I knew the team would be great.  We are approaching a time when we will know the team will be bad with no hope for recovery.  Brandon needs to go, but I just don't see them doing it.  5-7 is a pipe dream.  This will be 2-10.

I think this is a pretty good summary of a realistic worst-case scenario. 2008 was a rough year but at least we had the feeling then that better days were ahead. As long as Brandon is around, there's no reason to expect things to get any better. And he has a $3 M buyout.

I feared a repeat of 2008. We are headed there. Let us be delivered by a coach that can pull us out of this hole...and save Dave Brandon's job, because I think we are stuck with that corporate butt wipe given the current circumstances. If only Mary Sue were here to give him the boot...

By mid dec. Hoke and Brandon will be gone, a new AD in place and we'll all be speculating as to who the next coach of this dumpster fire will be.

God help us all if it's a MAC coach or Miles.  If the next AD doesn't get this right, we will become SMU.

When you retain an OL coach who has no clue how to teach;  when you have a DB coach who has never done that;  when you move a outside All Big LB to the middle where he has no clue; all led by an incompetent coach and a shell shocked QB...am I leaving anything out...

and right now I don't see us winning another game. Up till now I've been opposed to the idea of letting Hoke go mid-season, but I'm now wondering if it would be better for the players and for Hoke to make the move and go to an interim HC for the remainder of the season.

The atmosphere around the team and the fanbase gets uglier with each loss, and I fear what will happen if Hoke is still around for the 52-6 asspounding we're likely to get in East Lansing. It's clear that Hoke knows what lies in the future, and delaying the inevitable might be toxic.

I am fascinated to see the hostility of the crowd toward Hoke and especially Brandon next Saturday night.  That's about the only drama I figure we have to look forward to.
