Where are people hanging out in Cleveland?

Submitted by msoccer10 on
I'm in Cleveland for the hockey game and trying to figure out where to watch the basketball game. Anyone have suggestions?

In all seriousness, if you are walking don't go south of progressive field, north of st. clair and stay between east 9th and west 9th. That will be safe and have everything you need. A stop at Slyman's for corned beef is highly recommended, but drive or get a cab there. Call to see when they are open first.

While there are dangerous parts of Cleveland, you are exaggerating the concern.  Anything from the Cuyahoga east to 30th street are fine.  (Much of it would not be interesting to you, you are not entering the hood.)  The near west side is fine too (and has some interesting neighborhoods.)

If you were going to Slyman's, you should drive because it will be cold.  You should also wait until Monday because it is closed on the weekend.  (The corned beef is great.)

Downtown Cleveland is perfectly safe.  Don't get your panties in a bunch and act like you have never left your "safe" little suburb.

If you are from out of town and don't know your way around, focus on the Gateway area (where Progressive Field is) and the Tower City Center (only a few blocks away).  Tower City is the old train station and now mall.  One of the larger towers (the older looking one) is the "Tower."  The Cleveland Alumni Association is having a tailgate at Houlihan's in Tower City.  There is an indoor walkway from there to Quicken Loans Arena (which is immediately next door to Progressive Field).

According to one of my partners who has young children, Disney On Ice will be at Quicken Loans.  So expect crowds of nice young families with their little tykes wandering around along with the hockey nuts.

Second this.

I lived on St. Clair and 6th for a year during my fellowship at Cleveland Clinic.  The area around Progressive Field to the Brown's Stadium should remind people very much of the COPA/Ford Field area in Detroit (I went to school at Wayne State School of Med too).

There are pockets in the stadium area (East 4th Street, Warehouse District, Tower City) that have a lot of restaurants & bars where there is almost always pedestrian foot traffic.  Lola @ East 4th, Crop, Muse in the Ritz, XO are fantastic places to get a bite to eat.

St. Clair going east to around CCF is pretty safe.  Cleveland's Asiatown is there; you can get good dimsum, asian baked goods, and one of the best places to get Peking Duck I've had (Toronto, Singapore, LA, SF) @ Bo Loong.

Is Cleveland DC or NYC? No.

Can people who grow up in the Metro Detroit area throw stones at Cleveland?  Not really.  They are about the same, one is just on a river, the other is on Lake Erie.

Go to the Winking LIzard or Pannini's.   The Lizard in on E Huron just off East 9th and has really good food, a lot of TVs and over 100 beers (sort of like Cooter Browns for those of us who were there) except it has table service and is a bit more upscale.  Pannini's is across the street - also has good food (great overstuffed sandwhiches), lots of TVs but less beer variety and a bit more "earthy" shall we say?

Both are about a 10 minute walk to the game down East 9th.  Enjoy!

Well, it doesn't.   The downtown Lizard is a little smaller than the original near my house, but it is fine and its beer selection is extensive.  Very close to Progressive and the Gateway area.  It will be packed.

Are you in downtown Cleveland?  What hotel/area are in you?

City Tap has a good beer selection.  Winking Lizard, Panini's, and Harry Buffalo are over by the baseball stadium are decent sports bars.

Flannery's is over that way, but it's kind of expensive.

I'd walk East on Prospect if I were you and you'll have a lot of choices. When you hit E. 4th there's a section to the north that is foot traffic only that has a good selection of bars, and to the south (toward the Q) is the Harry Buffalo, which has good bison burgers. If none of those options suite you, keep going east. You'll hit City Tap (like they said, good beer selection), the winking lizard, and paninis. Good luck.

If you want a seriously great sandwhich and don't mind waiting a long time then you should go to Melt. Believe me, you wont be sorry. It's been on basically every Food Channel show that they have. Also, the game will definitely be on and you can drink and stand around while you wait to eat.

Bar bites Happy hour from 5 to 630 during the week, not sure about the weekends, but great bar food at good price - for Morton's. In the same building as the Ritz.

If you are staying over (or willing to leave late) and want to have a nice dinner, check out the host of great restaurants in Tremont on the west side of the Cuyahoga River.  Lolita, Lago, Farenheit, Fat Cats, and the Lincoln Park Grill are all very nice.  Treehouse is a nice bar that has food as well.  They are all located in an old blue collar neighborhood that has become trendy.   You would need a car from downtown (or a cab).
