When will we hire a DC?

Submitted by michgoblue on

While I have been a huge supporter of Hoke, I cannot for the life of me understand by he has not hired a DC yet.  I fully understand the need to not rush the decision - look at how poorly RR's defensive choices turned out - but at the same time, there are less than 2 weeks until signing day.   I can't help but believe that if we have a staff in place, we could make a late run at some kids that hadn't previously considered us.

Same concern regarding QB coaches.  With only Denard and Devin on the roster (until and unless Tate returns), it wouldn't hurt for us to pick up another QB in this class - it's not like we don't have the room.  By my count, we still have 3 spots open - DC, QB and D-line coach.

When can we expect to have the staff filled out, and does anyone have any realistic thoughts as to who might fill out these spots?  I had heard rumblings about Loeffler for QB coach, but nothing recent.

...is that I thought we had our DC two weeks ago.  Hoke mentioned Rocky Long during the presser so I thought we had our man.  Maybe Hoke thought he was coming along.

I hope it's soon though because it would be nice to look like we have a tight running ship around here.

My hunch is that Hoke forgot that part of his job. He focuses more on looking you straight in the eye and bellowing. I will call Dave Brandon and remind him that we need someone to organize the defensive players. Otherwise I fear that opposing teams will score on us at will. Also, I think it will cause us not to be able to recruit defensive players, given that they don't know who will be coaching and organizing them in 2011.

Not to confuse.. I understand the allure for Michigan wanting Greg. I'm just a little unclear as to why Greg would be interested in taking the same position at the collegiate level? I'm not in tune to the salary of an NFL DC, but I can't imagine we'd offer a significant pay increase? For a man that has already been a DC at Notre Dame and yours truly, I'm not sure what the allure of returning to Michigan would be for him, especially given the studs he has on D at Baltimore. Any ideas?

Still in it

Bears= Jon Hoke

Green Bay= Mike Trgovac

Not in it

N.E.= Corwin Brown

Baltimore=  Greg Mattison

If it's Corwin or Mattison why the delay?? So now were down to Jon or Mike??? So who are we rooting for 3:00 on Sunday???

Unfortunately, if we hire Mattison we will have pessimists coming out of the woodwork posting things such as:

"Why are we hiring a 61 (I think) year old?!?!?"

or

"I could coach that Ravens defense and be successful (see Ron English 2006)"

Personally, I like the idea of Mattison being the DC here.  At the very least his NFL ties with players such as Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Terrell Suggs will help with recruiting.

Angelique Chengelis's Detroit News article from today indicated that the offensive staff may be complete. It may be that Al Borges will be both OC and QB coach, which he's done before several times, including when he was at Auburn. Chengelis has the current openings as DC, defensive backs coach, and defensive line coach. Given all the problems with the defense, I'd rather they have another defensive coach on the staff than a dedicated QB coach.

Here's a chart that Chengelis included with her article:

Work in progress: Brady Hoke's staff

Offensive coordinator: Al Borges; spent last season as OC at San Diego State.

Offensive line: Darrell Funk; has worked under Hoke since 2008 at Ball State.

Receivers/co-recruiting coordinator: Jeff Hecklinski; joined Hoke in 2004 at Ball State.

Tight ends/special teams: Dan Ferrigno; a Pac-10 veteran, also worked at Western (1982-1986).

Running backs: Fred Jackson; he will be entering his 20th season on Michigan's staff.

Linebackers: Mark Smith; has been on Hoke's staff since 2003 at Ball State.

Strength: Aaron Wellman; has worked for Hoke since 2004. Worked at MSU 2001-03.

Open: Defensive coordinator, defensive backs, defensive line.

is interviewing Jon Gruden today and Tony Dungy tommorow.  It makes perfect sense that one of these former professional coaches with no ties to U of M will take the DC job.

Not until after DB has had a chance to review all the resumes that BH is forwarding to him. Once he compiles the short list, Brandon needs to sit down with each candidate and review game film, and then give each a lie detector test evaluating their everlasting and undying love for Michigan. The final test is to bring the two finalists into the Big House and time them as they crawl from the south end zone to the north over broken glass, with the keys to the DC's office in Fort Schembechler hanging from the uprights in the north end zone.

I suspect that it won't be much longer.  After the experience with The GERG, we realized that it pays to CAREFULLY phrase your question to the Ouija board.......

Robinson hire: "Who can run a defense?"

Next hire (we hope): "Who can run a GOOD defense?"
