when is too much michigan koolaid a bad thing???

Submitted by GOBLUE4EVR on
i have to get this off of my chest, and throw it out there to level headed michigan fans. one of my buddies back in windsor is a huge michigan fan goes to almost every game and is a part of a crazy tailgate in the victors lot. after that it goes down hill in a hurry. he and i were IM'ing each other earlier and the first comment that sent me was "do you believe now when i say they are going to win 9 games" my answer was: when i said that they were going to win 7 games that was a baseline, anything after that is gravy. i also tried to explain to him that they have 4 tough road games still to play, and he was having none of that either. he also told me that he had made up his mind that michigan was going to beat OSU after he watched spring game. after that comment i was done talking to him. not because i don't believe it could happen, but because why would a person make such an assumption after watching a glorified scrimage where tate was up against 2 and 3's on the defence. my question is to all of you is: is my friend drunk on the "koolaid"???

Anything is better than the 3 last year, and M is really doing much better this year. However, our defense is still not good and Tate is our single biggest factor in winning games. Beating ND was a good start this year, but winning that game was due to both skill and a whole lot of luck. Michigan State went just the other way against the same team, suggesting they are about as good this year as Mich. There are some tough games on the road, and we will likely lose some of them. My thoughts are winning 8, my hope is for 10. My fear is that it all falls apart and M ends up with 6.

I am not concerned with any Kool Aid drinking at this point. Remember last year? Yeah, me neither. I guess to play into your Devil's Advocate role a little bit, I'd say that even when people were predicting a 6-6 or 7-5 season for us they had us at 2-1 or 3-0 right now. So obviously the "heavy lifting" is still to come. (however, no one who predicted us going 6-6 or 7-5 had to think we would look this GOOD going 3-0)

Agree fully with the OP. I would be thrilled with 9-3. Want to see team beat OSU badly. But come on, didn't your friend see Priestly gashing the right side of the Michigan defense vs EMU? Didn't he see the ND receivers torching our secondary? Doesn't he know we have NO DEPTH? RR is doing an awesome job, things will only improve, but anything happening this year is only gravy. In fact, as much as I hate to lose, I would hate to go into OSU with no losses, have them destroy us, and then have to listen to the naysayers trash RR & the program. We cannot consistently play with the big boys this year. The basketball team last year is a good prototype: great year, but not there yet.

who'll get pissed off if M wins "only" 8 and OSU isn't among the 8, then yeah, its a case where too much kool-aid is a bad thing.

I had a friend who would make outrageous predictions every year, "This is the year the Browns win the Super Bowl", just so that he could claim later to be the first one to say it. But he tended to forget the predictions as soon as they proved false, i.e. when those same Browns failed to make the playoffs.

I am very optimistic, but there has been no real test yet. what will Tate look like with a hostile crowd. The experience with the rest of the offense will help, and he probably won't fall apart. But he may not be on fire. We'll know a lot more after that.

Im not so worried about Tate in a hostile crowd.. The rest of the team on the otherhand. Tate seems to be very cool and calm under pressure, but again at home. But if you can be calm as a 19 year old kid in a 100,000+ crowd, that says a lot coming from this former college athlete.

When the players start sneaking some sips. We're just fans, unless you believe in the karmic power of obnoxiously pompous fans, there is no such thing as too much kool-aid. That being said, your friend is probably setting himself up for a letdown. I'm just enjoying this season for what it is.
