When Maize was Maize - 2007 Michigan at Michigan State [torrent]

Submitted by MGoArchive on
all the talk of Nike and Michigan again jogged my memory of one of my favorite items in my video vault - the 2007 Michigan at Michigan State game.

This is a very special copy of the game - to my knowledge, it is the first 'full HD' recording that exists in the public domain; most of the recordings of that era were H.264 encodes, at 30fps. Lame!

Full bitrate broadcast 720p at 60 frames per recordings are the only way to live. This was a big deal in 2007. 2008 was the first season that I started recording games, so whoever did this and released the full HD copy years ago - Thank you!

Anyways, obviously there is quite a bit of footage of Michigan's uniforms - at first glance, the pants are nearly as highliter-like as the adidas pants, maybe a shade lighter. The helmets are definitely a different shade of Maize though.

I remember this like it was yesterday - it was my senior year at Michigan and I traveled to Lansing to meet people who didn't get into Michi- I mean, my highschool friends.

I remember the sparties were super hyped, coming out of their houses and yelling in the streets on Spartan Ave. when they momentarily took the lead, only for the Manning-hammer to be dropped on them.

Let's return back to crushing sparty, k? K.

Harbaugh? Harbaugh.

I remember that well - I made the journey to East Lansing to see this one, explaining to my wife, who had given birth to our son only about 2.5 months earlier (and my mother-in-law kept both him and our daughter, who was a mere 19 months old at this point overnight, so kudos to her), that this would be a good sort of date night. Somehow, it was - my opinion of this game completely changed with about two and a half minutes to go, of course, but sports is funny that way.

top/latest post on RCMB right now is a thread about 'scum hitting rock bottom' - with 6K replies and 500K views. Amazing.

Can't wait to see that place in flames once we kick their ass this year.

And 11 Warriors just had a thread about how Sparty is killing it on the recruiting trail and that Hairball can't compete and how awesome it is that State is helping to keep Michigan down. It really amazes me that both fan bases have somehow rationalized that Harbaugh is a below average coach.

Why would OSU ever want UM to be decent? So that it preserves the rivalry? Nah, whooping you feels amazing regardless of the stakes.

Because a competitive UM equates to a competitive B1G and thus improves B1G perception across the country? Nah, as seen last year, UM's 2014 trainwreck of a season did not hurt the B1G at all. Even though the wolverinies couldn't even muster a bowl game out of last year, MSU and Wisconsin helped to carry the weight and OSU found their way into the playoff, eventually becoming the first ever CFB Nat Champs anyways.

Just as you take "insane pleasure in OSU's losses," we revel in your ineptitude on and off of the field. Lucky for us, we get to enjoy the schadenfreude MUCH more often than you do.

but the thing is that JT's first season I lost that pleasure. Equally in 2011. When you suck I don't take enjoyment. Growing up in NW OH in the 90s I knew 1 osu fan for every 10+ UM fans. You're a fickle fan base as now many of my old UM friends support osu. I don't really care what your fans think as you'll implode, stfu & renounce your fandom once UM is back. I've seen it. It's just stupid to claim that I dais anything for the betterment of the conference as opposed to the rivalry. Yet, you're clearly unstable so your personal opinion means nothing to me. I do know some rational osu fans. I'll take their thoughts over this drivel.

If my personal opinion means nothing to you, then why waste your time with a response? Sounds contradictory. Also, if your old UM buddies decided to jump from that burning wolverinie ship and onto OSU's badass bandwagon and your assuming that they'll hop right back on over once we "implode and they renounce their fandom" (ha, I won't hold my breath), wouldn't that make UM a fickle fan base?

I'll enjoy the rest of my weekend by contemplating these and all other mysteries of the universe.

Thanks for the free entertainment though, this capped my night perfectly.

Why would anyone who is a Michigan fan visit those sites full of neckbeards (unless it's after Michigan beats that team so you can laugh at their crying)?

If you want to lose brain cells, just visit the latest news story about an NCAA ruling.

I also love checking in on that cesspool. RCMB really makes me appreciate great Michigan sites like this and TTB. Their recruiting analysis is so shallow. It seems like not one of their recruits has any flaws to their game. Rather, the blue wall has conspired to underrate their commits. Here I see nuanced evaluations of our players. There I see, and I do not exaggerate, statements like "eat it Harblow. Lukusa didn't play stiff when cHoke was after him". That is the closest they can come to acknowledging a criticism of a Sparty commit. The Only Colors is a little more civilized but they also have a hard time offering any insightful analysis that might be construed as objective concerning potential or current Spartans.

I know Mark D is a great coach. While Sparty have a hard time acknowledging that Harbaugh has done anything notable as a coach, we cannot plead that same type of ignorance in regards to their coach. We have lived through this bullshit for the last seven years. Jim Harbaugh took a shit Stanford team from the toilet bowl to the Orange bowl. He basically matched Mark D's career crowning achievement and walked away to accomplish bigger and better things. He did a few things and now he's home.

I am not overly concerned with our record next year. Obviously I hope for the best. But number one for me in 2015 is toughness. Punch Sparty back. Knock them down at the line of scrimmage. Make Connor Cook eat some dirt, and remind those cum stains that they come from a manure scented shithole and maybe they should all just stick to milking cows and designing juice boxes.

Meanwhile everyone else in the country acknowledges that harbaugh is a good coach. By the way since when is msu recruiting at a level any different from last year or the year before. 247 says they have 9 3 stars and 2 4 stars. The difference is that they have a lot of commits early and we don't have very many.

but what we can't do as fans is turn on each other in the likely scenario that we aren't a top 15 program this year (like msu will be). I'm genuinely concerned that all the Harbaugh (!) will give people scary unrealistic expectations. We've seen what happens when the program begins to eat itself. It's not 1969. Social media immediately convicts you in your actions unlike before. We need to give the guy we all wanted our full, unyielding support for at least 5 years.

I could see Michigan going 10-2 this year. Sparty could easily go 8-4/9-3. We finally have a leader who will coach our players to win difficult road games. We haven't had that since Lloyd Carr was here. Harbaugh is a student of the game like Carr was, more than just the rah-rah nonsense of Brady and the uncouth delivery/what-is-defense? of RR.

We're going to need to find a quarterback to hit 10 wins. We could easily be 2-2 coming into Big 10 play.

8 wins is pretty realistic is Rudock learns the offense. 10 would probably require the light to come on for Morris sometime this offseason. We've got a nice defense and should be fine in the running game. That's not going to beat MSU or OSU though. Add in some early season struggles and 10 gets hard to reach very quickly.

not saying he is '05,'06,'07 Henne. How about Freshman Henne though?

but he could be just as servicable as '04 Henne, with a decent OL and some unproven WR.

and I dont think it's much of a stretch to say that an '04 freshman Henne is on par with a Senior Jake Rudock.

We're closer than you think.

but he isn't a magician. I have a family friend that played under him at Stanford in Harbaugh's first season. Yes, they were atrocious the year before with much less potential talent than we have but he's not walking into a "ready situation" for going 10-2, IMO. We might start the year 2-2! We need a QB. Rudock may be that guy but we'll see. Even still, we have deficiencies in a lot of areas. We need to be ready to genuinely, truly build for real. IMO, we'll build at a slightly faster pace than Dantonio got msu running. We just can't all freak out of we lose at Utah or to msu/osu in year 1. I'm a realist & I'd be happily stunned to go 10-2 this year. Even under Harbaugh & I know exactly what he is.

Danwillhor

mentioned that. Still doesn't change anything. We have guys with potential but guys that were coached by currently unemployed or laughably employed coaches. They were soft. If they mess up they were given hugs, etc. Year one is where he sets the mentality. From there they recruit their kind of guys & build the army. I'd be happily stunned with anything more than 8 wins. I think we could start 1-3, TBH. We need to be patient is all, no matter what.

"We haven't had that since Lloyd Carr was here."

We didn't really have it then, either. He was awesome against Sparty but spotty against everyone else in the new millenium.

If my memory serves me correctly, these early season road samples were preceded by similar (that is, road) losses in 1999 (Washington), 2000 (ND), and 2001 (UCLA). In fact, losing an early season game (often to ND) was a bit of Michigan tradition going back to the Bo years.

2002:http://espn.go.com/ncf/2002/20020914/recap/michigannotredame.html

2003:http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?id=232632483

2004:http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=242550087

2005:http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?id=252670275

2006 ND was, of course, a shining exception. In retrospect ND was overrated, but it was still a great win.

Anyway, I hope Harbaugh does better than that.

Bo's teams often lost an early one because he played as tough a non-conference schedule as anyone in the country, year in and year out.

Lloyd's teams did the same thing because they were SPOOKED the first time they hit the road. That road opener streak is one of the reasons the "everything was awesome until 2008" narrative is such crap.

I'm pretty sure about that.  But for now let them mock us and have their fun.  I wouldn't go to their message boards touted Harbaugh this and Harbaugh that.  Many of us saw Hoke's recruiting an assumed a return to glory would follow.  I know I made an ass out of myself proclaiming to my ND friends that 2013 would be the year UofM was competing for titles. Notice how current players aren't making bold proclamations?  Pretty sure thats instilled by the coach.  Let your actions on the field speak for you.  We as fans should do the same.  Go blue!

My last game at MSU with the MMB, and the third of four straight UM-MSU games I went to in East Lansing (2003-2009). And it may have been the most fun. One hell of a game.

watching this game with a room fully of Sparties... I kept bitching, (in my head), "Why don't they throw it deep to Manningham..." Then they finally did! Anyway, that game was a sign of what was about to come...yeah, State seemed to always play us tough but there was a different "feel" coming from this Dantonio led team...God, if we had only hired Harbaugh after that season...

If Vegas put the win total at 9.5 I'm betting every penny I own on the under. Harbaugh is a great coach and I expect him to win, win a lot, and win big here at M, but if you believe this team is getting 10 wins I think the blue goggles may be on a little too tight.

I think this team is 7-8 wins with 9 being a ceiling with a game that we undeservedly win.
