When Does Kelly start to get trated like RichRod

Submitted by BlueDog on
It seems to me that the shitstorm hit RichRod pretty quickly when he let West Virginia. His team was coming off a loss that likely kept them out of the National Championship game, so though they were going to a big bowl, it was consolation prize time when he quit. Brian Kelly, on the other hand, bailed on a team looking to establish themselves as a national power. It has to deflate the team badly going into the biggest game in the history of the school. So if Florida stomps them in Tebow's swan song (there is a latent gator pun in there somewhere) lots of people are going to write that Cinci is going to crawl back into their Ohio hole. Kelly's timing is horrible, and totally disrespectful. One month of recruting is so important that he is sacrificing a program he purported to be dedicated to for years. Is this all some form of Irish Teflon?

He probably won't get the same treatment, because it seems that most in the media like him, as opposed to RR who they can't stand for some reason(not from around here?)

Can we stop with these hypothetical situations and "Why won't the whole country pick on Notre Dame like they picked on Michigan?!?!?!" babble. It just sounds like a bunch of whining, and on top of that, who gives a damn? As Michigan fans, we shouldn't give a flying f*** about when Brian Kelly might possibly maybe kinda sorta get treated like our beloved Saint Rodriguez. I'm growing tired of seeing posts about Notre Dame, especially the non-football related kind.

Kelly made a business decision, just like Rich Rod did. They saw an opportunity to coach a big time program, and they took the job. Initially, many WVU players were mad, but after a few days they accepted Rod's move and were happy for him, saying that they knew it was a business decision and a great opportunity. Same thing with Cincy's players. At first they were mad, especially Marty G., but after a few days, many players accepted it and understood that it was a business decision. All this Kelly bashing is ridiculous. Notre Dame landed a great coach; I sense that alot of Michigan fans are jealous of ND because of their moment in the sun right now with the hire of the hottest coach in the country.

1) UM had a very messy coaching search - Remember the yacht? 2) $5 million dollar buyout - kept RR in negative press 3) No in state rivalry for the press to pander to 4) UM had not essentially changed in 40 years, generational inertia to overcome. 5) UM lost a ton of talent / ND, even with major losses, will be starting with more raw talent I can't blame BK for taking the ND job, no more than you can blame RR for taking the UM job.

Spot on - it was the buyout that caused the mess. If Cincy wants to turn this into a prolonged public mud slinging contest, then Kelly will probably get the same treatment. RichRod's troubles didn't really start until the law suit. On his first day, everyone thought he was a charming Lion King fan. Oh, and Kelly could help himself by not going 3-9.

Kelly was at Cincinnati for three seasons. That's not a long time. Cincinnati is not a big time school. It's really a nice school, with nice people who probably wouldn't fart in church, but it just doesn't have quite the panache of Notre Dame. Also: Did Kelly fight any buyout? Did Kelly graduate from Cincinnati, spend seven years building it up from scratch, look at another job, then make a "lifetime committment" to Cincinnati, then leave one year later? As for this disrespectful shit about leaving before the bowl game: Uh, WWRRD? (What Would Rich Rodriguez Do). By the way, how DID Rodriguez leaving WVU before the bowl game work out for them? Who the HELL cares how Kelly gets treated? I hope they have a private masseusse there who will give him a "Happy Ending" massage after every tough day at the office. Couldn't care less.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here: Kelly didn't have the buyout mess, shredding of papers accusations, calling recruit before leaving school accusation...that's probably why. And probably because Kelly has that politician charm to win over the media. I have to say I agree with Magnus on this, though. Hopefully this puts an end to all the ND talk for awhile.

First of all, what does "trated" mean? Secondly, why would you wish that kind of treatment on anyone else, let alone a guy who built himself up out of Michigan at GVSU? I will root for Michigan until I'm six feet under, but I liked Kelly before and still have respect for him. Michigan didn't even give him a look and while things will get better we have to lie in the bed we've made.

why would anyone have a problem with him leaving UC for ND?!? Timing is the product of six weeks between bowl games, not Kelly's problem. Now what is ironic is that he just fired/did not retain any of the coaches except for the running backs coach. I know i've heard of someone doing a similar thing, but I just can't quite place it.

I think a combination of forces got it going with RR. - The mess over the buyout - A group in WV that was very upset and vocal - A pro-Carr faction at UM that was annoyed with someone charging in with a "better way". - At least one rag - the freep - that was willing to jump in and pump up the negative. I don't know how much if any of that Kelly will face. Carr was a well-entrenched, respected fixture at UM - Weis did not have that standing. No idea who the South Bend or Cincinnati media will approach it. Kelly may get a free pass by comparison.

I think the original question is being missed. Certainly as fans we have no issue with Kelly leaving as often happens, its a business after all. I think the issue is that the media gave Kelly a free pass while with RR he got hit almost right out of the gate. Many coaches have done it in the past and many will do it in the future barring an NCAA rule banning it until after bowl season as I think it should be. This is the 2nd coach in a row that has done this to UC though with Dumbtonio doing it first.
