When Do We Hang the Banner?

Submitted by AmaizeingBlue on

Does anyone know when the B1G Championship Banner is going to be raised in Crisler?  Is it going to be the first home game of the season?  Or is Brandon going to save it for a better home game, like NCState?  Obviously it has to be relatively early in the season, but I don't really think it'd be a good idea to hang it before a game against a terrible team.  Has Michigan officially announced anything about it yet?

I assume they'll raise it against one of the weaker teams early in the season.  That way they'll get a win on the banner raising day and they could potentially sell more tickets to a game most wouldn't attend.

Just a guess, but could it be the first B1G game of the season? That seems to be the obvious choice to me.

I live close to NC Sate's arena in Raleigh and go to several games there each year (but mostly Hurricanes hockey).  NC State came in 5th in the ACC but they will probably raise a banner for simply making the NCAA Tournament.  It will say something like "NCAA Sweet 16 2012".  Keep in mind that they would raise the banner even without going to the Sweet 16.

My question.....

Is this appropriate or do you actually need to WIN something to raise a banner (conference regular season, conference tournament, NCAA regional......)?  I know that Michigan only raises a banner for winning something.  What do other schools do?

Keep in mind that NC State is the same school that had a parade for winning a Gator Bowl against Notre Dame (back in Philip Rivers years) and recently had a special ceremony to celebrate the 23rd Anniversary of the 1989 team.

I'm sure alot of people around this tradition will feel you need to "actually need to win something" but I think it's fine. Banners are such a big deal to every school, I would have no problem if I went to a smaller (or less sports oriented) school and they hung something for just making it into the field of whatever the hell the number is now. It is still an accomplishment for the non 'elite' teams. Hell I have no connection to 'em, but if Eastern wins (gets in) a bowl game, I'd demand a parade.

If you're a major-conference school, you need to win something (or at least go to the Final Four) to hang a banner.  Hanging one for making the field of 68 is ridiculous  for someone in the ACC  - especially one that has won two national titles in the past.

I'd even agree with a single banner that lists all of the years that you've made the tournament.  However, if you're in a major conference, you need to win something to hang a banner.  NCSU has "little brother complex" to UNC.  Carolina has a bunch of banners that they've earned so NCSU will hang a banner for anything in an attempt to keep up.

I was really curious to see what NCSU would have done this year if they didn't make it to the Sweet 16.  I think that the banner would have said "NCAA - Third Round" which is pretty sad considering that the first round only consisted of four games.

You have to erase the 2011-12 season, and move on to 2012-13. You can't keep dragging it out and wait to hang the banner in December.
