What's with the resurgence of Navarre Jerseys?

So after years of considering, I decided to finally go out and buy a Michigan football jersey. Naturally, I wanted to get a #16 jersey, for my all time favorite player, John Navarre. Surprisingly enough, the store was almost out of Navarre jerseys! They had one left in my size though, so I bought it, and prepared to flaunt it on Saturday at the Big House. Lo and behold, I wasn't the only one with this in mind! I didn't know there were so many Navarre fans still out there, but it was one of the most popular jerseys I saw for the day (along with a few people shamefully wearing David Underwood jerseys). Anyways, does anyone know what's the sudden rush of Navarre jerseys? Is it the recent news article on him? Are there that many Arlo Steel fans out there? Oh well, the more support for my favorite player the better!

I have been wearing my Navarre jersey a bit more than usual this season...  I have a rule that I can only wear the jersey of a difference-making player during any given game, and I can't wear a home jersey if the team is on the road, and vice versa.

I'm thinkin' of holding off on the Navarre/Denard until the Sparty game, so who do I go with this week?
#2 Woodson - (wore it last week, errrr, so prob. not)
#21 Desmond
#32 A-Train (thing is HUGE, unfortunately)
or #86 Mario -- probably the early lead

The transcontinental pass worked every time Lloyd called that play.

*Charles Woodson threw back to Brian Griese against Wisconsin in 97.

*Dialo Johnson threw back to Drew Henson against Penn State in 99.

*Marquise Walker threw back to Jermain Gonzales against Illinois in 01.

*Steve Breaston threw back to John Navarre against Minnesota in 03.

All of those plays set up touchdowns but ironically, Navarre was the only one to score on the actual play.  Griese was close.  He made it to the 1 before getting knocked out of bounds.  Keith Jackson had that great quote after Woodson threw to Griese.

"That thump you just heard?  That was Bo Schembechler fainting."

For all of the away games I always make sure that I wear my white Terrance Robinson jersey.  It's weird though because it is a Nike jersey, and T-Rob had never been on the team when Michigan wore Nike.  I guess Nike just knew they had a good one coming in a few years.

There's only one acceptable choice for a Michigan QB jersey.

I remember, as a kid, being incredulous that the qb successor to Leach was not sporting #7. Since I had come of age as a fan during the preceding four years, I couldn't fathom a Michigan qb wearing anything else. For me, it still has a magical quality to it, like wideout wearing #1. Maybe Shoelace will switch . . .

I always liked Navarre.  He had to deal with constant criticism while he played for us and he always handled it with class.  In every interview he ever did, he couldn't have come across as a nicer guy.

I've been thinking about making a tribute video to him.  He only threw, what?  72 TD's while at Michigan?

I definitely would love to see this.  You're absolutely right.  I always reference the video you created (as I did above) when people criticize him.  His interview at 7:55 has to make you feel his pain a little, but also the sweetness of the victory.

Yep.  I'm going to get started on it very soon.  Maybe I'll even be able to send the link to Navarre himself.

Desmond Howard saw the tribute video I made for him over the Summer and one of his people contacted me about getting a couple copies of it burned on to DVD.  He wanted one for himself and one to give to his dad.  I thought that was pretty cool.

The early criticism was extremely unwarrented. First, he was forced to start his RS Frosh year because Henson was out, then the Golden Boy leaves for baseball and Navarre is once again starting before he should be. Maybe not the best QB to play at Michigan, but probably the one I admire most.

Todd Collins also fell into that category for me stat wise.  I was too young to remember any interviews, so I don't remember his personality, but for starting 2 seasons, he had solid numbers.

But Brady to Navarre reminded me a lot of Grbac to Collins at the time Navarre was getting all of the criticism.

ed: well, Brady to Navarre admittedly had the Drew Henson drama, so it wasn't exactly the same.

Actually, I saw someone write some "Brady" guy's name on the Steven Threet throwback #10 jersey.
