I would give you all my points if I could!
I respect that but I also hope you are not sitting next to me at the game.
There are 3 games that are non-negotiable! ND, MSU, and OSU. I missed my cousins wedding a few years ago (MSU-her whole family is sparty) and next year I will miss another cousins wedding becasue its on 9/10/11 cute date but off limits!!
A good friend of mine says "I don't care about 95% of the shit that comes my way but 5% is non-negotiable!"
There may be no reasonable excuses for eventually watching the game by some means, but there may be some reasonable excuses for being unable to watch or listen to the live broadcast:
Trapped deep underground in Chilean coal mine with no access to Internet, TV or radio
"Introduction to Witchcraft" first date on satanic altar
Direct TV reception failure during climb up Mount Everest
In Chinese prison, awaiting delivery of Nobel Peace Prize
Stuck in belly of a whale
Returning dead parrot to pet shop
In solitary confinement with Bernie Madoff
TV in Canada where I'll be by game time. I'll have internet, but I don't know if it can get a stream from atdhe or ustream. Damn Canadian thanksgiving.
I see your point. I might get disowned by the MGoCommunity for missing the game, but my response would be, "Who cares? I shtupped Jessica Alba!"
Oh, you said two reasons.
"Sorry son, dad's car won't start. And looks like someone slashed mommy's tires. Guess I better stay here and get them fixed."
I'm a groomsman. Starts a 1/2 hour before game time. Its worth it for a friend this close. But my heart is torn in being away from the tv at gametime, especially considering this years heightened excitement.
I live in Alberta where NCAA football is not a consideration. I hope my justintv app works during pictures.
My girlfriends mother was supposed to come by tonight to see us and the kids before leaving for Australia for 6 months. I spent my entire afternoon yesterday getting the house and yard straightened up so that everything would be ready tonight. So of course she calls last night around 8:00 to cancel and asks us to come by on Saturday afternoon instead. Ya, not happening. I am not going. Even if I could go there and watch the game the only TV she has in her house is something straight out of a Dharma station.
On the plus side at least now I should have the entire house to myself all afternoon tomorrow.
Well, if you had to miss half a season because of a hospital stay last year, at least you missed the correct half of the season.
My wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant. She plans on attending the game with me but if on our drive to Ann Arbor she goes into labor, I'd say thats a legit excuse. I pray she doesn't have any false labor pains though. I can't be pissed if I miss the game for a birth, but if I miss it and DON'T get a kid on that day I will be a sad panda.
Also, my wedding day was 11-18-06. Ring any bells?? Yeah. I think there was a UM game that date, but how would I know because I was getting married. You might also realize UM has not defeated the team they played on that date since then. I accept full responsibility for cursing the team with my nuptials. I plan on getting divorced and remarried on the same day to break the curse before the end of this season, don't worry. Strangely enough, my wife is not a fan of that idea.
the only excuse for me would be a funeral of an immediate family member. Last little league season I missed several of my son's games to watch Wings playoff games. Like Boujie said above, he'll have hundreds more that are far more important. When that happens, my son will come first.
I'm fortunate enough to have a very understanding wife. Our last two anniversaries were spent away at Bed & Breakfast places, but both times we took time out of our getaway to watch Michigan football games. And when we were married 10 years ago, our wedding was intentionally scheduled on the bye week.
From an economics perspective, you should miss the game to attend something you will enjoy more. If things like fulfilling obligations to your family and friends are enjoyable, do that.
This is a fun thread, and certainly it's funny to say only death would keep me away. It feels that way sometimes. I've always said that part of the fun for me, rooting for U-M, is that I know I'll get to root for one of the best programs in college football for the rest of my life. That's security is not a small thing; ask Cleveland Browns fans.
It's just rare that there is anything else I would rather do (even factoring in social obligations). Missed games can make for great stories, though. Like the time I walked into the 2003 U-M-Minnesota Navarre-a-palooza after three-and-a-half quarters and thought, "Pretty typical, got this in hand. Good win."
