It's not a big stretch to arrive at that conclusion, especially since this is the first year for Hoke. If we continue improving, I don't see this as a bad idea. Competing (winning or even losing close games) with good SEC teams would be good for us in the long run in my opinion. Better than beating an anually overhyped ND team by a couple points.

Michigan has actually held its own quite well against the SEC over the past couple decades.  We did get creamed by Mississippi State last season and by Tennessee in 2002, but we've beaten Florida twice (2003, 2008), Auburn (2001), Alabama (2000), Arkansas (1999), and Ole Miss (1991).   We also had a loss to Alabama in 1997, but it was a close game.

Nonetheless I hope we keep the ND game, and stop playing so many FCS schools and lousy MAC opponents.

However, as we were about to extend our lead from 6-3 to 9-3 on third & goal, Griese thought it would be a good idea to throw a desperation jump pass over the middle, which was intercepted by the Bama linebacker & returned for a Bama TD.

WIthout that gift, we very likely win in a dominating defensive performance.

I mean, I have a great love for the ND-Michigan rivalry, so I'd be adverse to change it. However, if you want to schedule a game or a series against another school, the Notre Dame game makes it difficult, scheduling wise, especially when you might have several games away from home.

I'd love to see a game against a SEC school or a Pac-12 school. Even a Big XII (Oklahoma or Texas) would be good.

I agree to an extent. I mean, I don't like Texas for being very selfish with the Big XII network and all, but that's not really our problem. They're going to be promoted by ESPN and they're going to be making the big dollars. They're getting that money regardless. It's odd how they never seem to learn. I mean, we taught them how to play football all those years ago and yet every season ND wants us to take them to school all over again. *shrugs*

When I look at the schedule each season, I look to see how many marquee games we have at home and ND is always one of those games. The thought that we are going to drop them from the schedule and replace them with someone better every season is unrealistic. Brandon will end up replacing ND with another high profile opponent (e.g., Georgia, Texas) about half the time and then stick us with a bunch of additional MAC teams or worse for the remainder. Be very careful what you wish for.

Also, the idea that ND would not be able to find another high quality opponent to replace us is equally delusional. They are one of the elite programs/brands that help sell tickets and generate TV ratings. Just like Michigan, they will have no problem getting Georgia or Florida or Oregon or LSU or some similar program to fill the slot if that is what they want. The losers in any concerted effort by the B10 to cut out ND will be Sparty and Purdue.

We only help keep them relevant by playing them every year. If they want to play Big Ten teams, join the conference. They snubbed the conference. I say return the favor and have nothing to do with them.

I would like to add, though, that I have trouble understanding why the Big Ten has allowed ND to cherry-pick a mini-Big Ten schedule, but without the grind, for as long as I can remember.

We have a supporter in the MSM; Angelique has written about this before, too.  The Big Ten should tell ND to join if they want to play Big Ten teams.  ND's schedule is so easy that they should have a legitimate shot at a BCS "Championship" more years than not, because Michigan and USC are the only consistently elite teams they play as "rivalry games", while teams like Sparty and Purdue should usually serve as great foils for ND's success.

Also, playing ND doesn't help recruiting as much as a game in Florida, Texas, or California would.  At any rate, I'm looking forward to the announcement.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think a national series will be scheduled. IF this happens and the series is terminated effective immediately, then that means Michigan most likely schedules a home game against an FCS school or low-level FBS school for the 9/22 week next season.

DB said flat out back awhile ago, he wants more home games because he wants to make more money. This is no surprise to me, and I actually hope it happens.

If you've ever read the book "Natural Enemies", about Michigan vs ND series history. The athletic department has had a long history of giving ND the finger and telling them to stick their series up their ass.

Yost didn't want to play ND, the teams went on a hiatus from 1910-1941 without playing.

The series resumed in 1942 and 1943 in a home and home.

ND's coach Leahy in 1943 was a dick, so Crisler didn't want to play ND.

Another hiatus from 1944-1977.

If Michigan tells ND to take a hike, I'm sure Yost and Crisler will be smiling.

I would think if they stopped playing, they would make it effective 2013 or 2014. Can't pass up earning more $$$ by extorting the fact that it will be the "last" foreseeable game between to the two.

With that said, I'm fine with it. I like what OSU did with USC/Miami/(I think Texas) having a home and home with each of them.

the speculation came from a michigan insider that posted on michigan's scout.com message board:

"Eyes/ears open on the 28th. One decision will be undone while another will be unveiled. It's not bad news. In fact, I think it will bring about some things Michigan fans have waited a long time for. Unfortunately, the change won't come quickly. Not apparel related."

We decided that michigan cancelling the series with ND matches up with what he is saying

undone- michigan vs. nd series

unveilved- series with a national opponent

schedule changes like this dont come quickly, and it isnt bad news because it would help recruiting.

dont you think that matches up pretty well with what he said?

Does he imply that we will have another long term series with a single opponent, or several home and homes with a variety of different opponents? Or is this simply not revealed.

well he refers to whats being unveiled as just one decision, so if he really is talking about the termination of the ND series i would assume that one decision would just mean replace it with one team. im not sure if that makes sense but playing a different team every year would seem like multiple decisions.

I guess I read out of that that the "decision" is that we are going to play a series of home and homes as a part of our future scheduling logic.

I don't see a long term series with a single program making sense in the long run, unless its a school in Texas, Florida, or California.  Which it very well could be.
