i know we were around 40ish and the media for the most part was impressed with the win..Thoughts?
a terrible blight on our fine country
I'm as excited as the next guy but let's see the ND result a win also...then we can start to talk...
If we beat ND too. Don't get your hopes up.
Zero point Zero ---- And this is for the best ime.
We'll get some votes.. don't think that they'll put us in the top 25..
We'll probably get ranked next week after we beat up Notre Dame...
while uconn was a favorite in the big east along with uvw, they weren't ranked and did get that many votes in either poll. i say that we get their points and a few more and end up on hte outside looking in on the top 25 -- say 27th.
Ya i would say we won't get ranked, since we didn't beat a ranked team..
If we beat ND by 2 td's ill bet we are ranked.
Beat ND convincingly, then we can discuss.
out there and not to many folks have jumped on the band wagon just yet. After we beat ND, I'd imagine we're in...
is pretty good!
If we take care of Notre Dame, I think you'll see us in the bottom 1/5 of the polls. Of course, the voters could get all kinds of Denarded this weekend and throw us enough votes to sneak in at 25.
There will be 1-3 spots open. My guess is the first opening goes to Stanford.
I'll just be happy to see Michigan in the list of "other teams receiving votes". I've considered that our Super Bowl these last two years.
Note to OP --- there is this thing called "The Google" you type in AP Top25 and it tells you the current record of all the Top25 teams. So far, only 3 have lost. Pittsburgh (15), UNC (18), Oregon State (24).
Boise State (3) and VT (10) play tomorrow but even the loser will probably not fall out of the Top25.
I'm guessing UNC and OSU (heh, heh) drop out. Doubtful M would move in.
You mean to tell me that Florida is still going to be ranked in the top 25?
Michigan outplayed #4 Florida and was more impressive than #5 Texas, against a far better team than either of those powers faced. Even #21 LSU could barely pull it off against a team missing 7 defensive starters, and #14 USC allowed Hawaii to out-gain them with 588 yards. Yep, U of M deserves to be ranked. Florida's spot would be the most fair, but I suppose I would settle for LSU's spot... until next week.
Teams do not fall from the top 5 to unranked after winning their first game, no matter how crappy they looked. No they did not look impressive, but it would be ridiculous if they were dropped from the rankings.
but I hope the media slappylackeys succumb to Brian Kelly-love and ND worship and slot the Irish in somewhere in the 25.
I agree. I don't want to be ranked just yet, espically after last year. If we go 6-0 we deserve to be ranked no sooner.
We were ranked briefly following the ND game last year if my memory serves me correctly. I'm as excited as anybody but we were all this excited last year after the first four games.
Yeah I keep bringing myself back to reality by thinking about this time last year. I do think we're better but if last year taught us anything, it's to take the season a game at a time. Just enjoy the ride. Haha for some reason as I typed that I thought of that Harold and Kumar scene where they ride the cheetah...except Denard is the cheetah.
(firing up GIMP...)
First 4 games last year:
Dominated a MAC team
Needed a miracle comeback to beat overrated Notre Dame
Dominated a MAC team
Needed a miracle comeback to beat not at all underrated Indiana
I'm not seeing how this start is comparable. If we beat Notre Dame, we're looking at a probable 5-0 start going into a very favorable matchup with MSU. I'm all about keeping my expectations realistic, but the win yesterday really was that big of a deal. Michigan beat the shit out of a good BCS team and our defense proved totally capable of bending without breaking. That bodes incredibly well for this season.
We beat what *may* be a good team. At the time we beat Notre Dame, I'm sure you remember they were in the top 25 and were generally thought to be a better team than they actually were.
Connecticut may ultimately prove to be a good team, but at the same time they may have regressed a little from last year. We just don't know yet.
I agree with your overall point, but our defense was helped out greatly by the Astroglide brand football that UConn was throwing around yesterday.
I'm loving the glow but let's see how te men do the next five games before we start looking at rankings. We need to keep supporting our team to keep the heads level.
We not care about rankings for the time being? As coaches like to say, "Take it a game at a time. Rankings and props from the pollsters will take care of themselves."
Until we prove that we can slug it out with the Big 10's biggest mo' fos, I'd just as soon we sneak up on people, anyway.
A convincing victory over ND would probably get Michigan in the top 25: barely. One good thing about being Michigan is that if they play well, they will be ranked fairly by the end of the year. That is what really counts, anyway.
Getting "too far ahead," I could see a very nice ranking if they manage to go 6-0 with a signature victory over Sparty.
Book it. The knowledge told me so.
The team played well, but even going 2-0 by beating ND won't get Michigan in the top 25...........we saw this story last year and the team imploded once they got into Big Ten play.....the voters won't be so quick to give UofM the benefit of the doubt, not after the last few years.
Beating UConn and ND would be great, but then you've got UMass and Bowling Green........no one will care about Michigan beating those teams.
Start out Big Ten play convincingly, and then we'll talk about being ranked..........I want this team to succeed, I like RichRod and his style of play, but it won't mean anything unless we win a few against our conference opponents.
I disagree. I think that a convincing win over ND gets us in the top 25. The voters have short memories, and its pretty clear that one more similar performance from Denard will get the hype train a-rollin' full speed ahead.
I don't think Michigan will br ranked unless they take down a ranked team - the first one they encounter will be Iowa.
If you watched sportsworks like I did. Woody said the Spartans were much more impressive. Baligian and Sharp were of the opinion it was more about UCONN sucking, then Michigan doing well. Also according to Sharp, when B10 play starts, other teams like the great Spartans will just run it down Michigan's throat. The 3-3-5 has no chance of stopping the run. Our finesse defense will be smooshed by all the ogres in the B10. Also DR will be out with injury soon enough. You see, he runs far to much.
Now that I have been enlightened by experts such as these... at least the suspense for this season is over. Michigan will be lucky to finish the season ranked ahead of Yale, let alone the top 50.
I watched those ass hats talk about Notre Dame. I don't know if you've heard, but we might as well mail it in against Notre Dame on Saturday. Our defense won't be able to stop that Brian Kelly offense who will just "run it down the defense's throats."
Someone should ask Bob Stoops what he thinks of a 3-3-5 "finesse defense" against the run. His Oklahoma Sooners played against WVU's in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. I'm fairly certain he came away impressed.
Sean Baligian is a moron, and I am starting to dislike him almost as much as Bill "Huge Douche" Simonson and his diarrhea-of-the-mouth. I never thought someone would approach Huge-like disdain from me, but Baligian is starting to make that a reality.
I know it's completely irrelevant, but I found it amusing.
When playing a NCAA 2011 Dynasty, Michigan was still out of the Top 25 after starting 7-0. One of the fake "headlines" it showed on the ESPN News thing was "ANN ARBOR IS FURIOUS: Fans angry about snub in polls"
That's with one zero.
and rightfully so. everyone hopped right back on the bandwagon last year when we started 4-0 and some people were putting us in their top 10/15 in those 'based on performance only' rankings. they all got totally burned (as did we) so they will wisely stay off the michigan pos-bang for another week or so.
At this point it doesn't really matter to me - keep winning and we're ranked. Just focused on ND this week. The rest will come.
been to a bowl in two years, and have had gone 8-16 in that time, being ranked should really be near the bottom of the priorities list.
The polls always seem to lag behind a week. I think we'll break the top 25 after UMASS (based on wins over UCONN and ND) .
I'd rather fly below the radar.
About the same chance the Forcier transfer threads have of stopping...
But we won't be ranked unless we beat ND, and beat them fairly impressively. Another 3 point victory won't be enough to get us there.
a few more games like that and maybe we will be ranked
That's the last thing we need right now...I don't even want to be ranked after we beat ND. Let the team keep that chip on that shoulder where it belongs.
When do the new polls come out? Usually it is on Sunday, but are they waiting for Boise/VT to play first?
within hours of the conclusion of the last game. usually they're turned in way earlier due to the likelihood any top 25 game is over by midnight Eastern, etc.
Its concievable that we get ranked after ND if we win, but I think some will be at least sceptical until the MSU and Iowa games. Win those and we're on our way back.
All that said beat ND in South Bend and do it walking away.....its certainly possible.
Not this week, but it's possible if we win next week. We turned some heads Saturday. Beating a Brian Kelly-coached ND in South Bend would turn some more.
We don't have a chance of being ranked this week, but we do have a shot with another big win over Notre Dame next week. Michigan always moves up the charts fast so as long as the wins keep coming we will be ranked by week 3 or 4. I'd personally rather fly below the radar and not catch a ranking for a while so teams continue to overlook us.
