Whatifsports creates Playoff simulation

Submitted by michiganfanforlife on

This website will simulate games 1001 times to predict outcomes in advance. They were about 75% right this season in college football. This is their 16 team bracket of what it would be this year if we actually had a playoff.

Check it out - Wisconsin vs Stanford in the second round. OSU vs TCU, Auburn vs Arkansas, and Oregon vs. LSU - I would LOVE to see these games in a few weeks... It will be interesting to see who they advance to the end.

And for those of you sick of this - I give you a funny random vid

1st try - MSU upsetting Auburn and Wisconsin and OSU upsetting Oregon on way to a OSU over MSU NC win.  3 out of 4 final four teams were Big Ten (MSU, OSU, Wisconsin, Oregon).

EDIT: Tried this 15 times and can't get Auburn & Oregon into finals.  Nevada keeps upsetting Oregon.  These percentages may be a little off.

I Don't understand why it's so difficult for them to embrace this formula. It would be awesome, you could lose one game and still get in, which wouldn't minimize the season. Everyone wins. Now, everyone loses.

Edit: meant as a reply to the 16 team playoff.

I think that with that many rounds the kids would get really tired and beat up and the final game would be sloppy and full of back-ups.

I don't love the bowl system, but I am not sure a playoff system is a cure all either. If you look at the D-2 teams in a system that does have a playoff there are around 2 or 3 teams that have a shot every single year and the other teams have no shot. That talent all flows to those 2 or 3 teams that are always in the mix (like we kind of saw in USC in the recent past). I am not sure that would be good for college football.

The one thing I truly hate about this system is the pre season rankings. Seriously, nobody knows a single thing (at least enough to rank) about any team until week 4 or 5 at least. Pre season rankings are the most stupid thing that holds the most importance in college football. It drives me crazy.

"Winning Percentage of 1,001 Simulations: Auburn 95.0% - Miami (OH) 5.0% "

That seems too low to me. I would be hard pressed to find a 5% where Miami wins this game.

I don't like this formula. I am a playoff advocate, but the 16 team playoff is too inclusive. I do side with the playoff devalues the regular season in this instance. Yeah, I know, home field advantage, easy first round opponent. This is much more favorable than the current setup, but I think Brian's 6-team playoff or an 8-team playoff is a far more preferable option than this 16-team playoff. Including all 11 conference champions is too much. The 6 or 8 best teams. That's what I want to see. Someone put Brian in touch with Mark Cuban to sway him away from his 12- to 16-team idea.

They don't just play all backups in the championship games. Ever heard of Armanti Edwards? Playing a few more games in place of one is no big deal, and the lower divisions prove this every year. I would like to see some factual evidence that these teams have no starters left at the end of the playoffs.
