What is your first offensive play?

Submitted by plaidflannel on

I would like to talk some football, and I would like to have fun doing so.  I know we fans do not control the first offensive play call, but if we did, what play would it be?

For me, I would line up in Pistol formation (a formation we have used this year, but not frequently).  I would have Gallon and Dileo (Chesson if Dileo is out) out wide right, Funchess and Kerridge to Gardner's left and right in the backfield, and Fitz behind Gardner.

Ball is snapped.  Fake zone stretch to the right.  Throwback to Funchess for TE screen with Lewan and Bosch blocking for him.

Best case: State defense overpursues the run fake, and Lewan carries Funchess on his back into the end zone.  Marcus Rush called for Roughing the Quarterback, and on the kickoff, Brady Hoke busts out the onside kick that he didn't want to show against Indiana.  Michigan recovers.  Repeat sequence until we are up by 70 points.

Worst case: Incomplete pass (unless it's the Akron game).  A sack could happen, but I would hope Devin could throw it at the feet of Funchess before that would happen.

So what is your first offensive play?

Shotgun deep bomb to Funchess. Preferably with a 6th lineman protecting Gardner's blind side. I don't care if they have 3 men on him, you throw, throw, throw and then scramble and slide.

Shotgun 5 wide...Outside WRs Chesson and Funchess..Slots Gallon and Dileo with Norfleet behind Gallon...Norfleet in motion on a jet sweep...Gardner fakes the jet sweep, both sides the slot runs a 10 yrd curl and both outside WRs are on go routes...let the safety decide where you go with it.

Flea flicker with a twist. A wideout will be coming through for the pitch back. Gardner will hold the edge with a nice block. Throw downfield to Funchess. Borges can pick who he wants the throwing wideout to be.

Flea flicker not a bad idea. The D would be coming downfield hard in the handoff, safeties would probably be crashing the line too. Got it for a 80 yard TD, could cause the safeties to stay back from the running game. Could help open up the running game and short passing game.

Would be shocked if it was actually called.

Norfleet runs the opening kickoff back to their thirty. We fail to get a first on 3rd and 1 and run Little Giants for the touchdown, but Borges has renamed it "Fuck You Mork."

When Gardner gets the ball, he fakes to the left. NO! He fakes to the right.

He doesn't fake. He thinks about faking. He pretends to fake.

I don't know where I am. I can't breathe.....

Shotgun, 4WR, 1RB. Read option to short side of field. Gardner intentionally keeps it for a roll out pass. WR's run a go, deep post, crossing, then a safety route shorter. Nothing there? Gardner keeps it a runs for 5-10 yards.

Some summary stats of the plays in this thread so far:

65% pass vs. 32% run vs. 3% punt.

If pass, 70% deep vs. 30% short (screens included in short).

If pass, 45% play action vs. 55% no play action (or play action not indicated).

Looks like most want to chuck it deep to get some breathing room for running the ball.

EDIT: This was through russale2012's post.

Put Cleary in at QB, with Gardner at Tight End.  Have Gardner run a triple reverse cowbell, with Gallon playing tackle (reporting as an eligible receiver)  Put Norfleet at Center, Terry Richardson at Guard.  Check with NCAA to see if Sheridan has any eligibility left- use him as a run threat by putting him at RB.  Boy, this Off Coordinator stuff is fun!  It's easy!  I don't know why this seems so hard, Al.

My serious call is put 4 wide and send them all on short and intermiediate routes because you know Narduzzi is bringing the house out of the gate.

Side question for once our gaggle of awesome WR recruits gets here with some experience: Does anyone ever go out with a 4 or 5 WR set and see who winds up mistmatched with the slowest/worst DB and just send that guy deep?  Like a WR audible?  In my mind it seems like it could be very effective.

Why would narduzzi bring the house out of the gate on the first play. No need. Base d, see what we come out in. Adjust and read. You will not see anything too crazy dirt play. Probably a play action pass on an intermediate route to gallon or the slot, whomever that may be. Incompletion or gain of 7-8.
