What You Heard During the Game Open Thread

Submitted by preed1 on

I just really have to share this with my fellow mgobloggers. I was at the game on Saturday and there was this loud mouth idiot behind me. Everything that came out of his mouth waqs wrong. He only cheered on TD's, everything else he would find somthing bad to say.

1."PUT IN HOPKINS!" yes, he is a great player, but there is no need to yell this on every play. I am sure RR can't hear you from 70 rows up.

2. "TAKE VINCENT SMITH OUT! HE IS TOO SMALL" way to say somthing negative about one of our many good backs.

3. "SHUT THE BAND UP, THEY WON"T HEAR THE PLAYS" I just dont even know what to say about that.

4 He would not shut up about the punt just before half, wanting to fire RR for that.

5. Repeated saying hanGerup.

It was just really annoying to hear this ass clown yell (not to be confused with cheering) the entire game. He was in section 40 row 71.

I am sure every one of the 113,000 fans at the games has a story like this. Are we really going to be subjected to 100's of these crap threads every freaking week ?

Brian, can we please get a "Do this again and you get banned message" out there for these "You won't believe what this one guy behind me at the game did" threads?

Really? Banned? A bit excessive. This sort of story may already have been shared a couple times but don't read it if you don't like it. It's not like the board is particularly active at the current moment. I'll take anything I can read at this point...work is slow today!

I generally don't listen to sports talk radio because I inevitably end up yelling at the radio to ... nobody. (I did accidentally listen during MSU week to a few minutes of Doug Karsch's show, and there was one exception who said he's a former player, who actually sounded reasonable.) But the readership and contributors here are generally reasonable and informed. Threads like this one are the MGoCommunity's way of commiserating and sharing collective experiences. Besides Brian and the other mods' takes or info, that's one of the reasons I read this blog.

If you don't like a thread, don't read it. Or don't read the whole thing and then complain about the content. There are plenty more opinions, stories and other content throughout the board. It's not hard, point and click on something else.

who else loves the new ending to the song the band plays before 3rd down plays? When they bang on the drums as hard and fast as they can and rile up the whole crowd? That caused Iowa to blow 2 or 3 timeouts on 3rd downs.

There was a guy in a Denard jersey near me who honestly had no idea of the concept behind this and was all-out screaming every time our offense took the field, and then got inexplicably quiet when we were on D. Being in row 20something of the student section, this didn't fly for long before someone decided to give him the memo.

Other than that, I was sitting next some nice Iowa fans, a nice MSU fan (who apparently lives in Ann Arbor and wanted to catch the game) and the typical mix of intelligent UM fans and mind-numbingly dumb/irritating UM fans.

Giving us his section and row number is useless without knowing his seat. What am I supposed to do, yell at every single person in the row till I find the right guy?

I heard a lot of beer bottles opening as I was hoping the more I drank that maybe all of the turnovers would go away. Sadly, I was mistaken as I found out the next morning they were still there on the stat sheet waiting for me along with a nice hangover.

Section 18, row 88. A guy behind me was screaming at the top of his lungs "Fire Rodriguez! Bring in Harbaugh! You F*$^%& suck!!", with his young son next to him. The old blue hairs next to me kept commenting on a sleeping baby by saying "He's got the right idea!" over and over again. It was infuriating.

I was in 18. Had a younger guy by the aisle probably around row 54 screaming stuff like "are you f'ing kidding me" after every play. Than the two guys in front of me who looked like they could be the father and son equivalent of the white trash character in the Simpsons who were calling for Harbaugh, and Tate, in the first half. Till Tate threw an interception.

Walking back after the game there were two guys yelling "F Iowa" to every Iowa fan. I was ready to turn around and scream at them, but they quieted down when we started passing cops (even though they were edging each other on that they'd bail the other out).

The concept of patience doesn't really exist with most college football fans, especially when they are used to winning like we are. I don't defend these types of people because it is very frustrating to listen to.....instead I just block it out, continue to be patient and believe in my team. That's all we really can do.

.....idea. It is hard for fans of CFB to be patient when their rivals seem to be winning easily and other teams have great success early on after a coaching change. Todays' world is one where people want everything NOW, and aren't willing to wait patiently anymore. No where is this more evident than CFB, where people think plugging in a new coach, or different style of play, will bring instant success.

How many people can realistically expect our defense to be good, given that the attrition from last year's defense included one of the best DEs in the country, the top two corners on the team, one of the starting safeties, and several secondary players with experience? And that was from a team considered to be bad at defense. No coach or differing scheme could have fixed it instantly. Instead, we have fans bitching about the defense like it should have been miles ahead of last year's, and down on the coaches who have had to scramble to field any sort of competence on the defense.

Our offense as well is filled with youth, but the major difference is experience. No where on the offense are we starting anyone who didn't receive experience last year, and the offense in particular is filled with starters from last year. It shows. The impatient do not want to hear about next year, but from what I can see, and given no major losses(such as Woolfolk's injury), or major coaching change, our defense will be just fine starting next year coupled with an even more experienced O, should propel the team to the top of the B10. Optimism? Maybe. Definitely more realistic than the naysayers who continually put the team down, despite the situation.

Some IGNORANT ASSHOLE by me kept yelling stuff like "Good effort!" and actually had the audacity to say "I think we can take a lot of positives out of this an have a good game against Penn State."

I politely reminded him that unless he acts like a douchebag w/ a sense of entitlement, the coaching staff has no motivation to try to win games.

(Though overall the student section around me was mostly just really supportive and into the game. A++)

who showed up midway through the first quarter, spent the next two quarters bitching about Rodriguez. Also demanded play action and that Rich Rod never does that, ya know, despite the fact it was right in front of him to see.

Then late arriving, drunk 70 year old Michigan fan leaves midway through the 3rd quarter.

Also some douche yelled at the top of his lungs "What the Fuk do you guys work on during the week" right after the blocked FG, live ball fiasco. ~~~ But that may have been me.

I did manage to keep my mouth shut after both KO's out of bounds, the hat didn't like my reaction much though.

I had two guys sitting near me. On every offensive play, they would would yell "Go Shoelace!" in unison. On every defensive play, it was "go defense go!", "interception!" and "drop the ball!". To make it better, when Forcier came in, they would yell "Go Tater Tot!" and "Go Tah-tay!" on every offensive play.

Between that, the hugging each other after every good play, and the continous asking about the Nebraska score, it got to be a bit much after awhile.

Usually, I text back and forth with an out of town buddy comments about the game. At about the time of Tate's 1st INT we went silent. No texts, not one, until game's end. I kind of went into a numb feeling and just let the game happen, and sat emotionless. I thought that doing that would help me temper a potential loss. As the score got closer, my hope increased, but I stayed calm. As Tate's final pass came to rest in an Iowa defenders arms, I sat there and tried to think about the positives and put the game out of my memory. My GF texted me if they won and I replied no. "So you're in a bad mood," she said. But I wasn't. It was more of an "insitutionalized" feeling. Like Brooks Hatlen in Shawshank. For so long I've been conditioned to think that every next game is a win, and it's difficult to have to hope for 8, 7 or 6 wins. Today at work someone bet me RR will be fired. I took the bet that he will not.

"Denard sucks (yes, someone actually said this), put in Tate!"

"Rodriguez, go back to West Virginia!" My retort: Where Fielding Yost was from?

My personal favorite: "We should have hired Kirk Ferentz when we had the chance. They were ready to run him out of town. He could have won in the Big Ten with the talent we had, Ryan Mallett would have stayed, and he'd have been a lot cheaper."

The worst, though, was the booing at halftime. I realize that many were booing the punt call, but the players running off the field don't distinguish between boos at them and boos at their coaches. Disgraceful. Even an older not-fan of RR that I've had some disagreements with defended the decision to punt based on field position and time left before the half.

1) "Come on, RIIIICKKKK" from some obnoxious Iowa fan in a deep, country-sounding voice. Literally said it on every play.

2) Iowa fan with an Iowa t-shirt and an MSU hat (seen, not heard). But really...can you be more of a dbag than this? Like why would you do that? I'm fine with representing your school at an opposing stadium...but come on. This is a deliberate effort to piss every Michigan fan off. If I wasn't sitting with my mom and brother who were at their first Michigan game I would have let him know how big of a clown he really was.
