What would mental health care professionals say about MGoBoard use?

I am somewhere in between "healthy to vent and achieve collective catharthsis" and "provides mind-consuming outlet causing obsessive behavior," but I am sure that has much to do with my own personal habits, which perhaps cannot be generalized.

i was out of work for 14 months and looking for jobs i always had mgoblog open on my computer and was constantly refreshing the site to make sure it was updated... if i'm not going to be near a computer for a day, i'm checking the site on my phone... now that i'm back to work full time on the site has gone down, but as soon as i wake up the first thing i do is get on mgoblog and the first thing i do when i get home is get on mgoblog... they always say the first step to recovery is to admit that you have a problem, but i'm not sure i want to do that yet...

Lucky for me I didn't use mgoblog when I graduated... but anyway... use your networks!  Start calling alumni... I'm serious.  My dad made me call alumni from Michigan and even from his alma mater... Notre Dame.  Unfortunately the ND alumni proved triumphant in helping me land a gig in consulting.

That or move somewhere with a better job market.  I just graduated in April, and moved to Austin about a month later when searching in southeast Michigan proved fruitless.  Not only did I land a job as soon as I came down, I actually got recruited for a better one 3 months later.  (By someone who saw my resume on CareerBuilder, believe it or not.)

My degree was in computer engineering, and Austin is a big tech center, so YMMV if you were a different major - but the best advice I can give to a Michigan grad looking for a job is to leave Michigan.

MGoBlog is a self-selected community of people with similar backgrounds and interests.  To draw an analogy to 19th century America, it is an ethnic neighborhood within the larger context of the internet's urban landscape.  It's a little slice of the old country in a scary new world and the culture shock of this new place (Michigan's recent struggles) requires others who speak the language and know the ways of home.  We cannot keep out the rest of the city, but we can feel safer here for a while before we have to venture out back into the occasional hellish landscape the rest of the city has to offer.

Only watched part of the Saturday night disaster so I did not feel as bad as previous weeks on Sunday.  Stayed away from MGoBlog on Monday and had a positive, productive day.  Returned to our favorite forum on Tuesday night and have been sucked back in to the fire GERG dialog, questions about RRod, did my own recruiting analysis of possible DC's, and had my heart skip a beat with the JT Floyd "lower leg" injury matter.  Did not sleep well last night.

Therefore to me MGoBlog has all the hallmarks of an addiction.  It does not make our life any better, can many times make us feel worse, and yet we cannot fully separate ourselves from reading the posts and sharing with our fellow suffering fans.  It also has a lot of similarity to co-dependency as we don't like what we see and feel but still come back for more.

So since MGoBlog has members with addictions and co-dependency issues, this makes us no different than most American families.  In families there is strife, differing opinions, but ultimately love and respect for the members and the family as a whole.  Therefore to be an MGoBlog member, is like being in a family, which is akin to being an American, which is still one of the best things in the world.
