What teams have as many huge rivalries as Michigan?

Submitted by mgobleu on

I know there's a ton of posts popping up tonight, and I know this is a bit of a stupid question, but this rivalry in some small way could be building to what Michigan v. tOSU was in the Bo/Woody years. I know "The Game" will always and forever be "The Game", but I can't imagine the sheer hatred the domers must feel the way the past 3 meetings have gone. Granted, this rivalry is a little watered down without recent real title implications, and also a lack of continuity in coaches for both schools, as Bo and Woody were large driving forces in the animosity. Still, I expect fury next year in South Bend. That said, combined with little bro and ohio, Michigan is easily part of 2 if not 3 of the most bitter rivalries in the country.

Iron bowls? Who cares.

Cocktail parties? Meh.

Red River? Nah.

All those brats in L.A.? Punks.

Florida has Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee.  But not many schools have 3 rivals.

I actually think we hate Notre Dame more than they hate us.  Bo used to say Notre Dame considers us one of the biggest games on their schedule...but they would never admit it.

You can't imagine the hatred they must have for us after the last 3 years, I WANT TO IMAGINE IT.  I feel no sympathy for those guys at all.  They have given us some of the most painful losses in school history.  We were often on the short end of a 2 point, 3 point,4 point loss in the final minute as well.  Mike Gillette's missed kick, Rocket Ismail, Harry Oliver....fuck those guys.  The last 3 games plus the Remy Hamilton kick in 94 and Desmond's catch in 91 is well deserved pain that they had coming.

There is nothing fundamentally different about Auburn and Alabama and Georgia, etc....same for all SEC schools.  They are mirror images of eachother and interchangable from year to year, who just happen to play in different cities in close proximity.

What makes Michigan's rivalries great is that Notre Dame, Michigan, and OSU all are striving to be the same thing, but go about being who they are in such drastically different ways, with such different attidudes that winning is tantamount to establishing whose identity is superior.

ND loses, and OSU cheats. Michigan FTW!

Michigan, State, Purdue, USC, not to mention Miami at a time, the military schools at a time, BC, Pitt, Stanford.  They clearly don't have a Michigan/OSU, but the first four I mentioned are quite solid.

The only mutual rivalies in that list are Michigan, USC and maybe Stanford. The rest of them are mostly one sided. (just like people from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Penn Sate seem to think that they have this huge rivalry with us when in reality we couldn't care less...)
