What Sports Would You Like to see Michigan Add?

Submitted by VCavman24 on

With Stanford about to pass Michigan in the Directors' Cup because of Women's Water Polo, it made me think of a topic I frequently think about.  What sports would you like Michigan to add?  As of current Michigan has 26 varsity sports (27 with Women's Lacrosse), all of which participate in the NCAA.  They are:

Men's Sports:

Baseball
Basketball
Cross Country
Football
Gymnastics
Golf
Ice Hockey
Lacrosse
Soccer
Swimming and Diving
Tennis
Track & Field
Wrestling

Women's Sports:

Basketball
Cross Country
Field Hockey
Golf
Gymnastics
Lacrosse (2013–14)
Rowing
Soccer
Softball
Swimming and Diving
Tennis
Track & Field
Volleyball
Water Polo

The NCAA sports that are sponsored that Michigan does not have are:

Men's Sports:

Water Polo

Volleyball

Women's Sports:

Bowling

Ice Hockey

CoEd:

Fencing

Skiing

Rifle

And a few non-NCAA Sports:

Pistol

Men's Rowing

Rugby

I am going to ignore the non-NCAA sports, as they do not seem practical and the expense could not potentially help Michigan in the Directors' Cup.  I personally would love Michigan to add all of these sports, partially because Ohio State has nearly all of them, which bothers me greatly. However, realistically all of the sports could be added, but skiing may be dificult.  If I had to choose a few, I would say add Women's Ice Hockey, Men's Volleyball, Bowling, and Fencing.  However, that is just one man's opinion.  So, MGoBloggers, what do you think Michigan should add next?

....by Mad Magazine, but I think we have the innovative spirit at Michigan to make a go of it.

Here is a link to the original explanation of the game (LINK) - anything that starts with someone shouting "Mi Tio es infermo, pero la carretera es verde!" has to be a winner.

Failing that, of those listed, I would say Men's Volleyball - it's an exciting game.

If they had varsity men's crew (perennially top-15 and sometimes national championship contenders) with a good coach. Because even some of the best programs nationwide rely on walkons, a good coach and decent recruiting would put a Michigan in great position nationally.

I was the king of teatherball during recess back in my day.

I have pictures:

It could also be added as a Women's sport:

...sure to become a revenue sport!

We could even go with equestrian teatherball, so as to make better use of the stables

 ...once Polo is added.

to Water Polo...the women have a team, I think the men should too.  UM has such a strong swimming team, there is sometimes guys who are good swimmers but get burned out and want a change of pace.  Some great players come from the swimming ranks.

I'm also a fan of Rugby...esp at the college level.  When I was at Air Force...lkoiioidmosm years ago, AFA were national champs two years in a row.  Very fun to get into, and there's lots of drinking afterwards.

Women's hockey would be fantastic, but we really would need another sheet of ice, perhaps two. They could easily build that on North Campus though, and rent it out when not in use. Even with all the sheets in town there is still a shortage.

This thread may be fully played out and dead, but there is an interesting update related to the question. There are now 40 colleges playing women's sand volleyball as a varsity sport. That is the magic number to qualify it for an NCAA sponsored championship tournament. The sport has been growing quickly over the last two years. The NCAA requires two years of at least 40 colleges playing to have an NCAA championship so 2016 should have an NCAA champtionship tournament instead of the AVCA sponsored championship tournament that occurs now. Given that Nebraska has a sand team and more top level recruits are opting to go to schools that have both indoor and sand volleyball, I think it is just a matter of time before UM jumps in.
