What players do you think get drafted? What round?

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

There's been a lot of discussion in other threads as to whether or not Funchess is staying/leaving (for the record, I personally think he's gone)...but what round do you think he's drafted (if you think he's leaving)? Also, what other players do you see being drafted?

Sorry but this isn't the NBA draft. The NFL rarely drafts people on "ability" since Al Davis died. Funchess might go 3-4 round, Ryan would go 5-6 possibly at best.

I don't think anyone else gets a draft day look. I'm not trying to be a dick or anything they seem to be good kids but they aren't NFL or really college star material right now.

ThE film on him will leave a lot to be desired. Granted he was dinged up, moved positions, he also had a poor QB throwing to him but he also showed pretty piss poor effort quite often as well. You never know who am NFL team will take a chance on but he could really solidify a 1st or 2nd round slot with a solid year next season.

Similar thoughts here.  Funchess still is being mocked late 1st to mid 2nd everywhere I see.  Whatever we think of him the NFL seems to be in a different place.  I see a lot of Mike Williams in him and that's not a compliment so I wouldnt take him before the 5th but the NFL guys still seem very high on him.

I had Clark working his way up to an early 4th round until his situation a few weeks ago.  No idea if he will be drafted now.  I have Jake in the 4th - I think someone will take him as an OLB and see he played out of position this year.

Uhhh and yeah that's about it.  Gardner is not a WR, he was very average at it here and has no position in the NFL.   He does not have Denard's speed so he is not a RB either.

Devin Funchess (WR/TE) - mid/late 2nd Round
Jake Ryan (LB) - mid/late 3rd Round
Frank Clark (DE) - mid 4th Round to uFA
Devin Gardner (WR) - 6th Round
Brennen Beyer (DE) - 7th Round
Will Hagerup (P) - uFA
Raymon Taylor (DB) - uFA

...at the same time, wouldn't shock me if only Funchess and Ryan are selected.

So I'm thinking he knows something I don't...since he coached in the NFL and all.

So I'm saying the Ravens take a late pick and select him.

To me, he's uFA all the way, but I put him in the 7th round only because Mattison swears he'll get his name called.

I see Ryan getting drafted somewhere between mid 3rd to mid 5th, Frank Clark uFA, Hagerup uFA, Beyer 7th, Taylor uFA or 6th or 7th round depending on how he tests out. Funchess I'm not buying the Kool-Aid that others have from pre-draft boards. I think if he tests out well at the combine and runs somewhere between a 4.45 to a 4.52 then he might get drafted in rounds 4 through 6. He runs much higher than that and it's late rounds if at all.

He has serious issues catching the ball consistently. I don't think it's good that he has a lack of production issue as the far and away #1 receiver as well as obvious effort issues. He'd have to be an absolute testing freak to get in rounds 1 through 3, which he might, you never know. I just think he doesn't look very fast. He'd be better served to stay another year and become a leader and learn his craft better and work on catching the football. He's got a long way to become a pro and I don't really know if teams will draft on potential when there is below average production for a #1 wr.

Good analysis. I agree on Funchess. There's no way a team spends a 1st or 2nd rounder on him based on potential. Doubtful they'd even spend a 3rd on that. Those picks are all expected to be contributors, not projects. And with so many good WRs out there why waste a pick on a project? Pick someone that can get the job done.

Funchess needs to learn from Trey Burke's exampe.  He has the potential but Funchess needs to show that he is capable of developing his talent at the college level before taking the next step.  Specifically, he needs to learn to catch passes more consistently.  The first round money that he could make in the 2016 draft will more than make up for the later round mooney that he passes up in the 2015 draft.

On top of that, he gets to be a college kid for one more year - an opportunity that money can't buy and that he will never get again.

I predict Gardner get drafted higher than expected. He's got the physical attributes which the pros place high value on and he's impressed people at the Manning camps. The fact that he hasn't played well is easily written off to coaching instability and incompetence. If nothing else, he has showed a tremendous amount of grit, perserverence, and loyalty. He'll get his shot at the pros.

NFL teams dont use a precious draft pick on a guy just because he has grit and perseverance. He is a bad qb. I love the guy, but the reality is that Devin has been below average for two years now. If he goes the Denard route and changes positions, then yes someome may draft him in the 6/7 round or as an UFA.

Funchess gets an advisory board rating as a 3-4th round pick so he stays. Jake goes 3rd round, Devin 7th. Taylor and Beyer might get 7th round picks, and Hagerup will get an un drafted free agent look

If I owned an NFL team I would pick Jake Ryan 1st, 2nd, and 3rd... in the first round. Of course maybe that is because I fan girl over him a little too much.

TL:DR Summary – Funchess (NFL 2nd or 3rd); Ryan (NFL 3rd or 4th); Beyer (possible NFL 7th, UDFA or tryout); Hagerup (UDFA or tryout); Gardner (UDFA, tryouut or social services agency or Peace Corps); Taylor (UDFA, tryout or high school English teacher); Wile (UDFA, tryout or engineering job or medical school); Clark (tryout); Rawls (NFL 6th or 7th or UDFA); Furman (possible NFL 7th, UDFA or tryout);  Vinopal (UDFA, tryout or business management); Christian (tryout or Enterprise Rent A Car*); Ash (tryout or Enterprise Rent A Car*) -- * Because Enterprise likes to hire former NCAA athletes

If Devin Funchess declares for the Draft, as expected, he’ll be invited to the Combine, based on his untapped potential and his 2013 performance.  Because his 2013 films are far more impressive than his 2014 films, his attitude will be questioned, so he’ll have to perform extremely well in tests and interviews to remain in the second round discussions. Many teams will think of Georgia Tech’s Stephen Hill (New York Jets’ 2nd round pick in 2012, and now on the Carolina Panthers practice squad) and consider him to be a risky pick in a high round.

Expect Jake Ryan to be invited to one of the post-season all-star games and to the Combine, and to score very high in interviews.  His test performances shouldn’t hurt his draft stock and if they’re excellent, they might help him a lot, because his films from every season and his attitude should keep him in the discussions for no worse than a third or fourth round pick.

Because Brennen Beyer’s character probably won’t be questioned, he’ll get high marks from Greg Mattison when NFL teams ask about him, and he has performed fairly consistently throughout his career – and led the team in sacks in 2014, his Pro Day tests should determine whether he’ll be drafted in the seventh round, but he should be offered a tryout somewhere, if he’s not signed as an undrafted free agent.

Although Will Hagerup’s performances may not have been as impressive as they were when he won the Big Ten’s Punter of the Year award in 2012, based on his admirable recovery from some personal issues, he should be offered a tryout by some NFL team.

Injuries, poor coaching and erratic performances may have hampered Devin Gardner’s chances at having a pro football career, but if he never has a single moment as a professional football player, any social services agency in this country would benefit from employing him. His Pro Day performance probably will determine whether he’ll be offered a free agent contract or a tryout as a receiver. . . . Considering that the first public mention of the idea for the Peace Corps came when Senator John F. Kennedy spoke as a Presidential candidate on the steps of the Michigan Union on October 14, 1960, it might be fitting for Devin Gardner to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years.

His Pro Day performance should determine whether new father Raymon Taylor will be offered a free agent contract or a tryout with an NFL team or teaching English next year at Detroit’s Highland Park High school.

If Matt Wile’s  not being offered an engineering job or continuing the long family tradition of attending the University of Michigan’s Medical School, and if he’d like a shot at pro football, then he could be offered a tryout by some NFL team.

Among former players:

His arrest and charges with domestic violence probably keep Frank Clark out of the NFL draft, and might prevent him from being offered a free agent contract, but he should be offered a tryout somewhere, because he might’ve been invited to the Combine and been no worse than a third or fourth round pick had he not slipped up so badly off the field.

After rushing for 1,133 yards and averaging 5.3 yards per carry so far in his one season at Central Michigan, if he’s not drafted in the late rounds (sixth or seventh), despite having pleaded guilty to criminal theft charges and having been sentenced to a year’s probation, if he performs well in his team’s bowl game, Thomas Rawls might be invited to one of the post-season all-star games and he probably will be signed as an undrafted free agent, because some teams will think of him like one-time MGoBlog favorite, Mike Cox.

With 12 tackles for loss in 11 games for Oklahoma State, Josh Furman’s performance in the finale against Oklahoma and his Pro Day performance probably will determine whether he’ll be this draft’s Stevie Brown (drafted in the seventh round by the Raiders in 2010) or be signed as an undrafted free agent. It will take an upset of Oklahoma for Furman to avoid ending his college football career.

If Pittsburgh’s Ray Vinopal (honorable mention All-ACC in 2013) isn’t taking his degrees in business finance and supply chain management to a consulting or business management career, his Pro Day performance will determine whether he’ll be offered a free agent contract or offered a tryout somehere.

West Virginia’s Cullen Christian will be playing in a bowl game this season, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be getting an NFL tryout, so his degrees from Pitt in Justice Administration and from West Virginia in Sport Management might at least get him drafted by Enterprise Rent A Car where lots of other former NCAA athletes are pursuing their careers.

Like Thomas Rawls, Ray Vinopal and Cullen Christian, Western Michigan’s Richard Ash will be playing in a bowl game this season, so he’s got that going for him, but he’s probably a long shot at getting an NFL tryout.  Like Christian, he’s working on a second degree, so getting drafted by Enterprise Rent A Car also might be in his future.

If the scouters pick apart his game and talk about his route running, inconsistant hands and his chances of being injury prone. They might pick him apart and send him to be a late third round. This might get him to stay if he likes the next coach. However, I think he goes late first early second.

Jake Ryan 3rd to 4th round pick. He has ok speed and strength. He is a little over aggressive, but a high character guy.

Ramon Taylor Undrafted will try to make a team but will get cut and go to the developmental league.

Devin Gardner undrafted I think plays Canadian football and will eventually make a team in a couple of years. I hope someone takes a shot on him. He is going to need to get faster. He didn't look that fast. Also will need to learn how to carry the ball better.

Delonte Hollowell undrafted he was not athletic enough and just too small.

Matt Wile undrafted. He was to inconsistant

Brennan Beyer 5th to 6th round pick. He is just a solid player, not spectacular anywhere. Needs to put on size to be a NFL D lineman.

Joey Burzynski undrafted just never developed to out play the other lineman.

Frank Clark 5th to undrafted Someone will take maybe not this year but after his  DV case gets taken care of he will go Somewhere. My predicition is Patroits and ends up being a pro bowler. He second to thrid round talent.

Will Hagerup undrafted just didnt punt well enough.

If he leaves, he will be a mid to late first round pick. Mark it Donny.

A kid with that type of frame and speed will not be passed up, simply due to potential. We saw it once yesterday, when DG had time, deep ball, no problem. We should have been taking at least 5 deep shots/post/fades to funchess all year. He was totally unproperly used and NFL coordinators will recognize that. The kid has amazng body control and speed for his size, I'd take a shot at him for sure!

Totally depends on their combines. Ryan and Funchess are probably third or fourth rounders unless they just kill the combines where i would think they could sneak up a round. With Funchess, I think it will also depend on how many other underclass receivers go into the draft.

Ryan is slow and played against terrible competition, so 6th round. Funchess runs poor routes and drops a lot of passes so 3rd round. The NFL will take into account neither played under a coach.

Funchess is likely gone, but he's so far from ready that it's not even funny. It's not likely, but possible that he could be Ernest Shazor 2.0. Dude doesn't block and has demonstrated inconsistent hands. Also, will he be projected as a TE or WR? If he goes, good luck.
